Re: [WT] 43 CJ or MB

The 43 Ford I had had the word FORD stamped into the rear, left of the tail gate above the tail light. Was this Jeep also known as a script Jeep?

Both Ford and Willys were contracted to make military Jeeps. The Ford is known as a GPW - G= General purpose, P=80 inch wheelbase, W= Willys design.

Ford identified their product by placing their logo on all the parts, and I do mean ALL. Bolts, heads, seats, etc.

So, yes, Willys and Ford made the same product at the same time.

Willys started stamping the serial number on the right front top frame rail in 1954. It's just above the shock mount. However, only the actual production number is present, not the model.

Re: [WT] 43 CJ or MB

Jim Allen

Actually... RE the first Civvy Jeep:

The CJ-1 project began in January of '44 in the form of a couple of
converted MBs. The totally civvy CJ-2 pilot model jeeps (40-50 of
them, some called AGRI-JEEPS) were produced in '44 and '45 (a few of
these have survived). Production of the of the CJ-2A began in July of
'45 and they appeared for sale as a '45 model in late '45, though
only 1824 of them were produced before production shifted to the '46
CJ-2As in October.

Scott,

CJ's (stands for civilian jeep) of any description did not come
ALONG UNTIL
AFTER THE WAR IN ABOUT 46-OR 47. So if you are referring to a 1943
model it
would have to be an army model made by either Ford (GPW) or Willys
(MB).
Between them they built about a half million units between 1940 to
1945 Almost
identical jeeps. After the war and due to the popularity of the
jeeps with
the returning GI's, Willys saw the opportunity for a good market
and started
producing the CJ-2 about late 46 or 47.

Re: [WT] Show time!

When picking the judges brain he told me documentation and original paper work goes a long way with him.
Might make a difference in how they do the judging. A static display with that information I could see would be helpful and might make a difference. The show I've been entering requires the vehicle be driven to a judging stand and then back to your spot in the display area - which leaves all such display material behind and the judges don't see it.

Wagon Bumper Rechroming

Kyle

With the seat frames & window trim off to the powder coating shop &
seats in for new covers, it's time to look into getting the bumpers
redone. I've looked at powder coating and didn't like the lack of
shine. When getting a rough quote from the local chroming shop, it
came in at around $1200. I have a 50 1/2 Willys Wagon with the wrap
around rear bumper (3 pieces) and the front bumper has the extra bar
on top along with the side bars & guards (6 pieces ). What have you
all done to get a nice looking bumper, send it to a re-chroming
shop? Who did you use and about what did it cost. I don't mind
spending the $1200 to get a new looking shiny bumper, but would like
to pick the hive mind on what you all did. My neighbor works for
FedEx and can get decent ground shipping rates for me. The wagon
goes in to the shop for a new coat of paint this month too. Soon
I'll be able to post some pics of the progress being done. I even re-
welded the dash to accept the stock gauges, now I just have to find
some, ha-ha. My father had drilled it out to accept the round gauges
back in the 80's. Glad to say the chrome I do have is shinning up
nice.

Thanks for reading my short novel,
Kyle

43 CJ or MB

Hi Folks,
EBay has a 43 Willys CJ posted. I used to own a 43 Ford CJ type Jeep. Did Willys and Ford both make Jeep vehicles at the same time or is someone mistaken?

Re: [WT] Show time!

Hi John,
I took a trophy home about two weeks ago for my 59 CJ5 which I really didn't expect.
When picking the judges brain he told me documentation and original paper work goes a long way with him.
Of Course the craftsmanship in which the truck was put back together and the shine also help. Just being able to drive your work to the show and have other people see it should be of great satisfaction.
This was the thrill for me.

My pickup renovation is now about complete. In two weeks I will be
driving it to my first car show. There probably won't be many trucks
there but about two hundred vehicles (no motorcycles) I'm told.

I plan on having it as polished and clean as I know how to make it.
I'm told the judges look at paint, interior, and engine compartment.
My plans were to do a little touch up with paper towels and soft cloths
after I get there.

Can anyone share some tricks or insight as to what we can do to impress
the judges and perhaps win a trophy? What products do you use? If I
put up some history or ads by the truck will it help me?

Thanks,
John 53 Pickup

Re: [WT] pitman arm installation question...

That wasn't where I used the 600wt oil - I used it in the knuckles on
the axle. For the steering gear I went with the straight 140wt oil
specified in the service manual I have. That was a 1950ish service
manual - might have been a change in specifications by 1962 though.

pitman arm installation question...

Can anyone tell me which direction the pitman arm ball should face
when mounted on the sector gear?

I'm reinstalling my Ross steering gear on my 62 pick-up and didn't
write down¡or take a picture...and can't remember which way the ball
´Ú²¹³¦±ð²õ¡

Does the pitman arm ball face in or out?

From my puller marks, it appears the arm was installed with the ball
facing inward or, towards the frame - not sure which way is correct¡

I'm learing; just because that's the way the old one was installed
doesn't that's the way it should be!--a lot of things on this truck
were installed backwards!

Any insight or pics are greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Matt

Tip #1 John, Meguire's (sp?) has a decent line of polishing
products.
Tip #2 go to the show & show off the Willys, enjoy yourself & the
other folks & cars. DO NOT CONCERN YOURSELF WITH WINNING A TROPHY!
There will always be a car or truck less deserving than yours
that wins.
It's always nice to have your efforts appreciated but taking home
a trophy is "extra"
Good luck & enjoy yourself.

Stick with the soft cloths. Paper towels can be a little coarse and
they tend to leave fuzzies behind.

Can anyone share some tricks or insight as to what we can do to impress
the judges and perhaps win a trophy? What products do you use? If I

My approach is probably not the best approach to follow, although I
have four trophies to show for it. For the first three I just washed
the truck with soapy water, rinsed, and dried. Used windex on the
windows after that. This last show I just rinsed off the dust and
dried it, and washed the windows. Another likely bad approach is
correcting the judges. ;) Of course it also helps when you're the only
truck in your division, or one of 2 or maybe 3. :)

But like Ben mentioned, go to have fun not to get a trophy. Makes for
a much more relaxed day and when you get the trophy it's much more
enjoyable - and if you don't get one then your day was still a success
because you had fun. If your show is anything like the ones I've been
in you'll be spending most of the day talking to people "who used to
have a Jeep truck/wagon/cj/jeepster" and wish they still had it.
