Our next contra dance will be this coming Friday, November 15 at the Channing-Murray Foundation at the corner of Oregon and Mathews in Urbana. The band for the evening will be Acoustic Mayhem with Laura Sleade, Ed Hawkes, Lyle Konigsburg & Sue Frankenburg. Our caller will be Karen Jackson from St. Louis. As usual there will be a short introduction to contra dance at 7:30 and the dance will start at 8. Bring your friends to join in the fun and snacks to share at the break.

I hope everyone will come out and join us for some fun music and dancing.

Keith Tuxhorn will be calling a pay-what-you-can contra dance in Springfield this Saturday, October 18, from noon-2pm. The dance is part of a benefit concert featuring Appalachian folk music to raise funds for hurricane-recovery in North Carolina. All proceeds will go to A selection of grassroots organizations recommended by Asheville residents. It would be great to have some seasoned contra dancers come, as I’m likely the only one in Springfield, to help dancing go smoothly. I’d love for you to join us on Friday, October 18th at 6pm for a celebration of our new IMC Activist Mural! We’ll have free dinner and live music by Terraign at 6pm. At 7pm, we’re excited to host a special storytelling presentation by friends of Jenny Wong Barrett. Artist Maya Bauer will join for the event along with Jenny’s husband Jim Barrett.

The IMC welcomed this new mural in the summer of 2024 to brighten the south ramp entry leading to our main level. The mural honors beloved local activists Jenny Wong Barrett and Dave Monk and begins a dialog about sustaining the impact of our elders and activists. More portraits may be added over time. The Central Illinois English Country Dancers will be holding a dance this Sunday, October 13 at the Mansfield United Methodist Church, 200 East Illinois St. in Mansfield, west of C-U on I-74. We'll be dancing from 2 to 5 p.m. There will be live music provided by the Flatland Consort and the dances will be taught and prompted by some of our local callers. If you enjoy contra dance you may also enjoy English country dance, so come and give it a try.

Our next contra dance will be this coming Friday, October 4. The time and location of this dance will be different than usual, so make sure you come to the right place at the right time.

The dance will be held at the Independent Media Center (IMC) at 202 S. Broadway Ave. in downtown Urbana. There will be a short intro to contra dance at 7 p.m. and then the dance will start at 7:30.

The band for the evening will be Martha Spencer & The Wonderland Band. I will be the caller.

This Saturday, September 28 will be the bi-annual barn dance at the Kalyx Center near Monticello. The band and caller are from St. Louis with Cambia providing the music and Lo Peckman calling. There will be a potluck dinner at 5. The dance will start at 7:30 with a short intro to contra dancing at 7:00.

The Kalyx Center is near Allerton Park in the Monticello area. The address is 436 E 1300 North Rd, Monticello. The entrance is on the north side of the road and can be a bit hard to spot. If you put the address into Google maps it locates a place on the south side of the road. It is very near by, but if you go there you will be at the wrong place. You'll need to go back a little ways and go to the north side of the road.

Urbana Country Dancers,

Sad to report that Tom Anderson, beloved long-time dancer, caller, host, and friend, died Sep 6, 2024.
He and Kathy hosted many wonderful barn dances at their place in northeast Urbana.
He was also active with Central Illinois English Country Dancers.

"Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 4 at First Mennonite Church, 902 W. Springfield, Urbana.
Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 5 at the church."

Fun fact: My first Contra Dance was 25 years ago today at Jenny Barrett's birthday party at the Lake of the Woods Elks Lake Pavilion. Jonathan Sivier called to the Hyperdogs(?), which included Tom and Matt Turino.

Our next contra dance will be this coming Friday, September 20 at the Channing-Murray Foundation 1209 W. Oregon in Urbana. The band will be our own Miriam Larson and Matt Turino (2/3 of the Mean Lids). Gail Hintze from Chillicothe will be calling.

As usual there will be a short introduction to contra dance at 7:30 and the dance will start at 8. Bring your friends to join in the fun and snacks to share at the break.

There will be some great music and fun dances so I hope everyone will plan to attend.
