P.S. Too Old To Be Controlled -

We always need people to help out before, during and after the contra dances. So we need volunteers to step up to keep things going. Some jobs only take a few minutes, but are none-the-less important. We have created a sign up page for people indicate what they are able to help with for our dances this summer. Take a look and see if you can help out at some of the upcoming dances. We'll send additional reminders prior to dances in the future.

Our next contra dance in Urbana will be this Friday, June 21 at the Channing-Murray Foundation, 1209 W. Oregon on the U of I campus. The band will be Too Old To Be Controlled with Claudia and Gary Kaufman & Dave Kuntz. I will be the caller for the evening. We'll have some great old-time music and fun dances. As usual there will be a short introduction to contra dance at 7:30 and then the dance will start at 8. Bring your friends to get them hooked on contra dancing and snacks to share at the break. I hope to see everyone there.

DARE TO BE SQUARE!

Martha Tyner is hosting and calling an evening of old-time Squares in Bloomington (Illinois), Saturday, May 11, 7-10 p.m., at the ComeTogetherSpace, 212 N Roosevelt Ave, in Bloomington.

She says:
This dance celebrates a milestone in my calling career, after George Lowery granted my request to try hmy hand at calling a contra at an Urbana dance in March, 1984--40 years ago!

Music will be provided by our regular Tuesday night jam; other musicians welcome--bring instruments.? Bring snacks to share.? NO admission, but contributions to help cover expenses appreciated.? Calls will include references to "ladies" and "gents"; dancers are always free to dance either role, and encouraged to switch roles, as well as partners, throughout the evening.? The ComeTogetherSpace is an historic building near Bloomington's downtown, now an eclectic artists' space, furnished with a recycled bowling alley floor--should make a great dance floor!

Schottische is the best couple dance ever invented for expressing mental flexibility and creativity. Its basic footwork creates a metronome that is satisfying with no embellishments, requires no turning when dancers want a break after a dizzying waltz, and has multiple places for a lot of turns for those who like spinning. This class will cover its unique basic steps, and go over the simple vocabulary that can be combined into a wide variety of dance moves. To dance a schottische is to be a genius on the dance floor!

I've just gotten a note from the organizer for the American Dance and Music Week in California. The camp is from June 30 to July 5 this summer. They just had one of their staff members drop out due to life events and are looking for a replacement. They are looking for someone who could prepare meals for the campers. They say the person would be paid as the talent staff, including round-trip travel to camp. So if you have cooking skills and would enjoy attending a contra dance camp this summer contact David Buesch <dbuesch2@...>.

In 1844, a frisky new dance took Europe and America became all the rage. The Polka Craze of 1844, aka “Polkamania,” was easy, fun, and absolutely everyone was doing it! This class will cover a basic turning polka, some simple polka variations, and more recent adaptations for use at Oktoberfests and other modern contexts.
