Seeking info for Mantua General 4-4-0 locomotive drive link/shaft 23
Hello My name is Jim Allison. Initial interest is in resurrecting an old locomotive (Mantua General 4-4-0) and then onto a small layout. I now have (4) of these locomotives My interest goes back to my childhood (in the 60’s) when I used to watch this locomotive and passenger car set go round and round the Christmas tree simple loop layout my dad made. He has passed (2013) and I have the old locomotive and passenger car set and want to get it running. The locomotive is missing the drive shaft/linkage from the tender motor to the gear drive in the locomotive. Does anyone know where I can get a drive shaft? I believe the correct PN is 18596 (w/o the plastic hex knuckles – just a straight piece of flex rubber??). I did see some info on Mr. Alan Mueller (I just purchased his 3 books) and look forward to adapting his work to this unit if I cannot find a simple replacement. Any help would be greatly appreciated as well as accepting me to your group. Jim Allison This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. www.avast.com

Rigid foam under cork roadbed for flat layout? 4
I am planning to start building a 2' x 8" shelf layout soon and previously bought some 1" green rigid foam at the hardware store for going over the plywood. I can't exactly recall the benefits of using the foam under the cork roadbed. I do remember that it is useful for carving out depressions for scenery but other than that wanted to ask about it's use and if it is worthwhile for building a flat layout. If it is worthwhile, what is a good method to bond it to the plywood? I have to use low voc product and have low voc caulk and wood glue on hand. Thank you. ------------ Please sign your posts so we know who you are. Thanks Bruce Wilson Owner/Moderating Team

2' x 8' Shelf layout - two sections or one? 18
I am planning to build a 2' x 8' shelf layout and wondering about the pros/cons of building it all in one piece or dividing it into 2 sections. I am going to be building the layout and then transporting it 7 miles after completion. I have a Toyota Sienna minivan and can probably get the whole 8' layout in if I laid it on it's side and have one end go up between the 2 front seats with the center console folded down. There wouldn't be much room for scenery or structures at that end but maybe I could add those after it is transported. The other option I am thinking of is build it in separate 2' x 4' sections that can be taken apart and reassembled once it is transported. This will be my first layout so have a lot to learn. Wanted to post here to see which way would make sense. Thanks! Dave

File Notifications #file-notice
Thomas Knapp added folder /Dowel Pins The following files have been uploaded to the Files area of the [email protected] group. /Dowel Pins/Module_Pins_RMC-Feb2011.pdf By: Thomas Knapp Description: An article on fitting layout modules with dowel pins. NOTE: The somewhat elaborate jig is NOT NECESSARY when using these pins with sectional layouts where the sections are built to go together in one way.

OT: web bookseller portals (was Re: [small-layout-design] Passenger Operations on my New Layout)
The first place *I* look for books is bookfinder.com, which is a portal site for most web-based booksellers. For any volume available from any site, you'll see offerings from any others as well.

Passenger Operations on my New Layout 17
I recently moved and I am starting a new layout. I want to have both passenger and freight operations. I'm starting with passenger operations. I have designed a line with a terminal at one end and a turnaround at the other. The terminal will have 2 incoming and 2 outgoing tracks leaving room for executive cars, a commissary and engine storage. At the other end, the turnaround has a storage yard included to hold name train setups. I feel right now it just runs back an forth with a few stops along the way. Can anybody suggest ways to add more switching interest so there's more to do? Thanks for any help I can get! -- Richard Richter

Claremont & Concord RR info source 2
Every now and then I know there’s discussion about the C&C as an ideal small layout prototype. Just found this great source of info on the line put together by a preservationist for the NH Department of Transportation. It includes scanned copies of the 90s/early 2000s RMC articles on the line, and a bunch of maps, photos, and other items that might be of interest to the modeler. Mostly focuses on the Claremont area but I think that’s the section most folks have expressed interest in modeling. https://www.nh.gov/nhdhr/publications/documents/claremont_railway.pdf Andrew Sent from Mail for Windows 10

Paired Industries 15
I'm building a small 3 by 5 oval (On30) that will have an interchange track (fiddle track) and two separate industry sidings inside the oval. I could "imagine" that these two industries are miles apart and run laps between them but think it would be more fun if one industry depended on the other for product deliveries. I also wouldn't be opposed to one industry making/processing something and then shipped off the layout for further processing and then delivered back to the second industry for finalization. Any thoughts as to perhaps what two industries within sight of each other would need a rail delivery between them? Or would it make more sense just to go with two stand-alone industries that ship only to/from the interchange track?

Locomotive Worm Gear 3
A bit off topic of group but it is model railroad related! I wonder if someone you might have a suggestion for me about the following. I have an On30 Bachmann Porter engine that uses a worm gear to drive the axle gear. The locomotive runs fine in the forward position but stalls (jams) in reverse. I disconnected the running gear and wheels and it does the same. Motor spins internal gears in forward but jams in reverse. I removed the gear that sits between motor and axle and the motor and worm gear run fine. Is there an adjustment that needs to be made to the positioning of the work gear? Some where I seem to remember that a thrust washer is used on the motor shaft containing a worm gear. Any thoughts as to why it would run in one direction and jam in the other?

Hello and Christmas Greetings 9
I am just arriving to the group. I have been in HOn3 for years but our recent move from a large house to a small townhome forces me to reconsider all my model Railroading to a simple 10' X 20" world. Like so many of you I still have excess kits in-spite of my prior sales on Ebay. I have NCE controls and Sound-Traxx in most of my favorite engines but it seems like the slow - speed SHAY should become the real focus now. Sierra West Kits have fascinated me because of their detail but in living in North Dakota their southern focus (lack of some doors) calls for some modification. Since We grew up in Wisconsin the "Chicago, Milwaukee, & St Paul" was my focus so a branch line is a natural. My interest in Genealogy revealed that 2 generations of my family worked at Fairbanks-Morse so I couldn't resist an early switching engine, so maybe I'll need to reconsider a use of dual- gauge track; so turnout conversions are also in my future. Anyway here I am in my mid-70s with more then enough to keep me busy... Great to be able to look in on all of you and see how you wrestle with space problems. Merry Christmas Bill

Combine Groups? 2
I know that when this group was first on Yahoo it ran out of space for the files section, so sldfiles (21 MB, plus 6.9 Photos), sldfiles2 (17 MB, plus 4.1 Photos), and SLDFiles3 (25 MB plus 88 kB Photos) were created to hold the overflow of files. I believe we have room to put all those Files and Photos here in this main group and delete the extra groups. Seems like not everyone that is a member of this group is a member of the others anyway. The messages that came over in those groups were just an automated monthly posting that are no longer necessary. Maybe the same for the small-layout-design-photos, although that is 301 MB, I believe we have 1GB of space for the files and photos each, or maybe combined? Any thoughts on this? -- - Jim B. Jack Trollope 3
This was posted by Chris Gilbert on the Micro/Small Model RR Layouts page Dear all I’m afraid I have some very sad news. I’be just received a phone call from Lou Trollope the better half of Jack Shortliner Jack passed away in his bed on Wednesday morning. According to Lou, he had a massive heart attack and it was all over within a couple minutes. She said he went the way he wanted to go. In his bed and quickly. There will be no funeral, he will be cremated and his ashes returned to Lou. He will leave a massive hole in my life, and will be sorely missed. I’m not sure what else to say -------------------------- Jack, as many know, was a very creative individual when it came to micro/small layouts and many examples of that creativity can be found in the various files of this groups and the affiliated groups. His Box Street Yard is perhaps one of the most popular micros. Jack was also a driving force behind the creation of the original Small Layout Design Group on yahoo. He always had interesting comments to make and he will be missed. Our condolences go out to Lou and his family. So Shortliner, from way up in the Highlands, RIP my friend. -- Bruce Wilson Barrie, Ontario, Canada Life Member NMRA Member Scale 7 Group Gauge 0 Guild 7mmNGA Member Bird Studies Canada Ontario Bird Banding Association Nature Barrie Simcoe County Banding Group

Underground/subway diorama 2
Here's a fantastic new video from the incredibly talented Luke Towan of an underground/subway station that gives plenty of ideas for a small/micro layout. It could be adapted to almost any underground/subway prototype. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-8hiy4oSJBg This particular dirama is loosely based on Melbourne Central. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Melbourne_Central_Station_Platform_2017.jpg Cheers David

Exhibition photos 10
There used to be a modeler who posted photos of model RR exhibitions in Britain or Australia -don't remember which. I really enjoyed them and got a lot of good ideas from them. But I seem to have lost track of him. If anyone knows who I'm talking about, and he's still doing it, please give me a link. Or if anyone else is doing the same thing. Thanks.

Preview: Central Coast RR Festival - N Scale Layout (Z Scale Layout) 2
Anthony Harris just sent me a video of the Z scale layout he will have on display along with his N scale layout: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0bSCXgofHeQ&feature=youtu.be There is no narrative for the video. The video is 15 minutes long but you'll see all there is to see in the first minute or so. Bob Chaparro Moderator Model Railroads of Southern California /g/ModelRailroadsofSoCalif

Preview: Central Coast RR Festival - N Scale Layout (Calif.)
Preview: Central Coast RR Festival - N Scale Layout (Calif.) Anthony Harris built this N scale layout, which is four feet by seven feet with about seventy-five feet of track. He is modeling the rolling hills of Central California and running modern equipment. The track plan is a continuous loop in a fairly complex design, typically with one train in operation at a time. There is a lot of hidden track, a grade for the cross-over, tunnels, retaining walls, a lake with boats and two bridges. The layout is fully sceniced with abundant vegetation. This layout efficiently packs a lot of running into a small space. Here is a video link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wzk0gwRojPE Anthony also will display a 3 foot x 5 foot Z scale layout. This has two operational tracks, four bridges and lots of interesting elevation changes. There is no scenery as yet. Photos of this N scale layout are below. Who Among You Operates Dead Rail Equipment In So. Calif.?
Who Among You Operates Dead Rail Equipment In So. Calif.? Who among you operates Dead Rail equipment on your home layout, either exclusively or in conjunction with DC or DCC powered equipment? If there are enough examples of Dead Rail railroads in Southern California I would like to organize a layout tour for early 2020. While garden railroads are welcome to participate I'm really interested in showcasing Dead Rail in O and smaller scales for those who might want to see this in person and ask questions. Let me know if you are interested in participating. Contact me off this group at chiefbobbb AT verizon DOT net . Bob Chaparro Moderator Model Railroads of Southern California /g/ModelRailroadsofSoCalif ++++ P.S. I've organized sixty layout tours (800-plus railroads) over the years and have a large list of persons who enjoy seeing layouts, so if you go to the effort of participating you will get visitors.
