Hello ? My name is Jim Allison.? Initial interest is in resurrecting an old locomotive (Mantua General 4-4-0) and then onto a small layout. ? I now have (4) of these locomotives ? My interest goes back to my childhood (in the 60’s) when I used to watch this locomotive and passenger car set go round and round the Christmas tree simple loop layout my dad made. ? He has passed (2013) and I have the old locomotive and passenger car set and want to get it running.? The locomotive is missing the drive shaft/linkage from the tender motor to the gear drive in the locomotive. ? Does anyone know where I can get a drive shaft?? I believe the correct PN is 18596 (w/o the plastic hex knuckles – just a straight piece of flex rubber??). ? I did see some info on Mr. Alan Mueller (I just purchased his 3 books) and look forward to adapting his work to this unit if I cannot find a simple replacement. ? Any help would be greatly appreciated as well as accepting me to your group. ? Jim Allison ?

I found this... Seems Mr Allen was actively making parts for the loco, but passed away in 2018. Maybe someone else has picked up the challenge.

I think I have a couple of these (Mantua and/or Tyco) in my collection... I have to hit the storage to see, but my inventory program says I have 2 "in the box" so they should have all the parts.? I might be able to take a picture of the piece to help in locating a replacement, if that would help.. or maybe get really lucky and have a IPB in one of the boxes.
Unfortunately, that means a day or two for me to hit the storage and dig them out but..? I'll let you know what I find.

Awesome!? Thanks for the responses! ? The loco I have just has bare shafts coming out of the motor and gear assy. ? So no “cups” and no “drive link/shaft”.? ? Looking for a drive shaft “system” that will connect the tender motor shaft to the gear shaft in the locomotive. ? Much appreciated! ? Thx ? Jim ?

Back in the early 1960s I worked in the train department of a multi-hobby hobby shop. We used small diameter rubber surgical tubing to make the connections on tender drive locos. You can probably use model airplane fuel line in the same way.

The one I had in storage was a Mantua model 307-44, "The General" W&ARR with wood in the tender.? It has a shaft that has knuckles on the ends that fits in the round plastic piece from the tender and engine.
According to my inventory program, I should have 1 more somewhere.? the problem is, it's somewhere among over 3000 pieces in storage so it may take me another day or so to see if it's different than the rest.
Hope this helps! Mike

All ? It has been a while since I reached out to the group for info regarding rebuilding a 440 General.? I did get Alan Mueller’s books and have pulled together all the resources needed to start this project.? Now I just need to get-er-dunn! ? However, Covid put a damper on starting my project (I did not contract the disease) but while I was confined I did stumble upon an old silent movie called “The General” starring Buster Keaton.? (a comedic spin on the Great Locomotive Chase of the Civil War) ? I was quite astounded by the rare footage of the 440 locomotives (General & Texas along with rolling stock) that will serve as historical data when building these locomotives for anyone that has an interest. ? Else, just watching an old silent movie starring the 440 was time well spent.? I am amazed at the stunts he pulled off. ? You all might already know about this info but if not please enjoy! ? Do an eBay search for “mantua general” and you can possibly find what you need. I saw several listings for driveshafts, for example.?

Thanks Charles! ? I was on ebay while you were probably sending me your text and I did purchase the vintage drive shaft just to get the train back on the tracks in the short run ? Disney made a version of “The General” which I believe started Fess Parker aka Davy Crockett aka Daniel Boone. No idea as to how authentic. Georgia has “The General” in a museum in Kennasaw and “The Texas” in a museum in Atlanta.?
The General was restored to full operating condition and converted to standard gauge by its then owner L&N for the Civil War Centennial. It and a period style passenger car were carried around their system (and likely on other roads) on flat cars by L&N and unloaded and run on its on steam. I believe it was still operational when it went into the museum, but subsequent federal boiler regulations probably mean it will never steam again.?
The Texas was stored/shown for decades in the basement of the building (in Grants Park I think) which held the Cyclorama. It was removed and sent to the transportation museum in Spencer NC for cosmetic restoration and returned to Atlanta for proud display in a new museum.?

Speaking of Cass, WV, Carl Arendt's website had a 4 ft. x 1 ft. HO scale microlayout of Cass, WV. As I recall, it had a small sawmill and enginehouse on it. It would make a great small layout in itself or combine it with another shelf(ves) or another small table for continuous running.

Cass has several Shay three truck?locomotives, including the very large Western Maryland #6. It also has one active three truck Climax. Nearby Durban has a three truck Heisler. So the “big three” are represented by active locomotives in a relatively small geographic area.?
Nearby is a large radio telescope operation.?

Daughter and I went Yo Cass?for a photographers’ weekend - or maybe it was called a Railfan weekend - and they had whistleblowing. One of the locomotives was maintaining a full head of steam while parked near the engine house. A pipe with a bunch of valved openings was attached to a steam outlet on the locomotive. People who brought?personally owned whistles had them attached to the pipe. Then competition began. Great fun to watch and listen. Unfortunately I don’t own a locomotive whistle so I could only be a spectator.?
Cass is currently rebuilding a two truck Climax which formerly operated at Durban, and also a rod engine about which I know almost nothing.?
As I mentioned a Heisler is operating at Durban, only 25 or so miles from Cass. This locomotive formerly operated at Cass.?
Several diesel powered?excursions are also run from Elkins WV, where there is now a railroad museum which I’ve not seen.?
The Potomac Eagle and Western Maryland Scenic are “not too far” from Cass. Western Maryland has been restoring/rebuilding an articulated (2-6-6-2?) which may be operational by now. In fact though?I don’t know the current operating status of either railroad.?
Enjoy!
