W0EB Fox post

Lloyd Lachow

Posted for Jim:

Hi Gang,
I'll be one of the Foxii tomorrow - Rig will be an
Elecraft K2 set to
exactly 5 watts with an Oak Hills Research WM2
wattmeter into a B & W BWD-90
folded dipole with the apex up 35 feet. As per usual,

I'll call CQ FOX on a
frequency somewhere between 7.030 and 7.050, and for
the major portion of
the hunt I will be listening 1-2 KHz UP from my
transmit frequency. I will
listen for stations on my transmit frequency
periodically and will so
announce it. Those who are capable of operating
split, please refrain from
calling me during those times to give the guys and
gals that don't have RIT
or split capability a chance. May the propagation
gods smile on your
hunting.

Jim - W0EB

QRP Barbershop open next Wednesday!

Lloyd Lachow

Need a trim for the holidays? A close shave,
perhaps a Brazilian wax? Well, circle next Wednesday,
December 29th, when the QRP Barbershop will be open
for business from 9-11 PM Eastern time (0200-0359Z
12/30).

This is the third running of this event, which is
held each fifth Wednesday. It's a combo of a
sprint-type event, where you get points for all QSOs,
with a hunt-type event, where you get bonus points for
working us Barbers, once per band.

After the shop closes, you can use the handy
autolog to report your results. The autolog and all
the info can be found by going to:

<>

Watch this space to see how many Barbers will be on
hand this time around. And...be sure to stop by - no
appointment needed!

happy holidays,

Lloyd, K3ESE
for the Barbers

PELTS IN OHIO?

WONDER IF ANY ONE IN OHIO GOT A PELT THIS WEEK. Band was noisey and
Long again. I heard a CU3 CALLING CQ UP THE BAND A BIT. MAYBE WE
SHOULD BE WORKING SOME DX.

Bill N8WS

Re: 1 of 2

N0UR finally came above the noise on .041 at 0330z. Never heard N1IX as I was looking for him below .040. Big mistake. Plagued with noise tonight. Turned out to be my AC power supply for the laptop. Hope for better condx. next week.

Later
W7KXB/Seattle

Happily conditions worked in my favor tonight. I found N0UR
immediately and didn't have to call too long before he picked me up.

Then I found N1IX down around .039. I believe he may be having
trouble hearing the hounds. I lost him for a while, but found him
again up a couple kHz around .041 and managed to get through to him.
Right after I worked him, he moved up the band again. I guess he's
trying to find a clear spot.

Good Hunting,

Kent, AE4Y

Just the opposite here in NJ. I worked Jim N0UR with not much of a problem. Not a peep heard from N1NX here in Central NJ. But I did have a good time in the NAQCC 80 Meter Straight Key Sprint!

Re: Idea for future hunt session(s)

jcg9uas

It was not my intent to infringe on the use of an animal name, and I
don't think I even used the term "hunt" to describe the activity. I
wasn't even thinking of a separate event

I was actually hoping that we could get foxes from each state
involved in the future hunt sessions, not a separate event per se.
Right now there are only 15 states involved in the current hunt
session from a fox perspective, if I counted correctly. In a 20 week
session, you could get 40 states, but you have to get 40 foxes which
is probably a challenge. I would imagine a fox from ND might get a
lot of interest. Alaska and Hawaii would be a real challenge.
Those 2 states would have to be in a 20m session to be fair to the
eastern states. One of the last hunt log's had QSO's from 27
different states so I believe that it might be possible to get 40
foxes. I know Alaska was there because I heard that station here in
OH.

I didn't really envision a separate event until you mentioned it.

Thanks. Just to let it be known, the folks who
birthed and nurtured the QRP Fox Hunt for the last
decade created a really fun, popular event, so much so
that to seek a certain station in an event like this
has become, in the minds of some, a "fox hunt." But
for a different group to use that name for the critter
sought is, in my opinion, an infringement on the work
of this group. So we ask that any of the many, many
nouns in the lexicon be chosen for any other event.

Thanks!

It was an idea that intrigued me but I do not want to infringe or
interfere with any existing activity or name, or outrage any animal
protection groups. The "WAS 50 in 50" kind of died a quick death,
but it was an fun idea. This type of contest would take either 25
or 50 weeks to complete. If we add in the Canadian provinces, that
would add additional weeks.

Interesting idea!

Please feel free to create an event like this one!
It won't be a QRP Fox Hunt, of course, since there
already is one of those...but if one or more of you
have a good idea for an event, and the time to
organize and run it, go for it!

In Colorado, they have the Snowshoe Run, the Pesky
Texans have an Armadillo Chase...we Barbers even have
a QRP Barbershop Contest. The more the merrier, says

Here's a thought for a future series of foxhunts. If you did a 25
week+ season or combination of 2 sessions (summer and winter), get
Fox volunteers from each state (25 weeks = 50 states with Hawaii and
Alaska being done during the summer session when 20m might be open,
plus you could work in the Canadian provinces, not to forget our
friends from the North) You could offer a WAS/WAP Work All
States/Work All Provinces award.? It might prove an interesting
challenge plus it would allow for 50+ different foxes which would
increase the challenge from both a fox and hound perspective.

Re: FOX Logging Program

jcg9uas

After you complete a contest using an N3FJP contest logging program,
go to the contest program toolbar click File ---> Export ADIF
format and it will create an .adi file (e.g CQWWDX20.adi in the
folder for the CQWWDX contest
C:\Program Files\CQWWDX20\CQWWDX.adi ). Now go to the Amateur Log
program toolbar, click File ---> Import ADIF File. That will open
up a window then go to the Program Files folder where the .adi file
was just stored, highlight the file, and click the Open button.
That copies the QSO's into the Amateur Log. It will put a comment
in the QSO comment box (e.g November SS Contest). Immediately after
a contest, I copy the contest log into my Amateur Log. N3FJP has a
QRP ARCI Sprint contest program in which the exchange is identical
with the Fox hunt. I use it for QRP type sprints. It is a really
slick process for moving data between various logging programs. You
can also select QSO's from the Amateur Log and export them to an
ACLog format file - go the Amateur Log toolbar click File -->
Export Log ACLog format ---> Selected Records It will then ask you
to highlight the QSO's to copy. It then tells you the file name
that it copied them to e.g K8WDN.txt. You could e-mail it to
yourself or copy the file to a CD, then you can go to another copy
of the Amateur Log (e.g on another laptop for instance)and import
those selected QSO's into the log on that laptop. It is a slick
method to moving data between logbooks. A friend of mine who was a
user of WriteLog for years, now uses the N3FJP programs for contests
because of the ability of N3FJP logging programs to move contest
logs into the regular logbook seamlessly. Since that file is a .txt
file, you could probably copy it to a different filename, and
massage the text file to create a printable text file.

Also, Wayne did you see my previous note earlier today about the
0308 QSO in the W5KDJ foxhunt log? It's K8WDN not W8WDN

WB4X request

Wayne Rogers

Howdy,

Make your 150 contacts which I'm sure you are going to do. Generate
the Log from the FIST program. Start/explore/program files/fist and
open WB4X file. Edit/"select all". Right click on the log and
select copy. Close FIST log. Select "NotePad" from
programs/accessories and paste the log to the "NotePad".
Select "Save as" and name your file and put it in a folder or on the
desktop itself. Open up the file and delete the stuff above the
log and all the junk you dont want in the log and save whats left to
your file name. You now have a log that you can work with to make
correction etc..... There or other ways to do all this and you may
have something easier. Ok, to send the log open your email/Send
msg. From the NotePad file (select all) and copy/paste to the email
message text area. You can now make alignment corrections on the
email with deleting and adding spaces as needed. Put QRP-l
address on the email and send it.

You still have the original log in FIST if you need it or mess up
the NotePad copy and have to start over. I have no idea what you
know about processing/editing text files so I told you as if you
don't know much Hi HI. Ani questions let me know. Just for kicks
send the completed text file to your self and see how it comes back
as everyone else will see it.
