I think your suggestion is the correct one .. keep monitoring the frequency for that "quick burst" from the FOX. I know it's boring just listening to noise for a long period of time. However, if you wish to be successful, this must be done. Here's my question Doc. Chuck and others agree that this propagation oddity does occur on rare occasions. What we're not being told is ... what allows it to happen??? This curiosity is driving me nuts. HI I believe aircraft being in the right place can briefly reflect a VHF signal (burst) on occasion but our focus is what happens on HF. Interesting question eh? FOX: propagation tests (long)
W.D. (Doc) Lindsey
Gang:
Earlier this evening (At ~0000 and ~0045) several QRPers conducted informal 40 Metre propagation tests. We wanted to see whether stations close to central New Mexico will be able to contact FOX K0EVZ tomorrow evening. This is a pretty tough distance, as we all know. I never could make it work last year. BUT good news = we did get it done tonight! Signals were very QSB and not super-strong, but they were fairly solid and good enough to log as a QSO. Thomas AC7A in AZ got through at 1955, with an RST of 439. If conditions are the same tomorrow evening, he will for-sure bag a pelt. Likewise, Karl K5DI in southern NM at about 1720 contacted K0EVZ with an RST of 339. Signals were very, very QSB, but again good enough for a loggable QSO. So......don't give up, no matter where you are located. Several years ago, I lived in Rochester, MN. The FOX one evening was Jim N0UR, living in Minneapolis, MN, about 79 miles slightly northwest. Technically it would be impossible to work him, either via skip or ground-wave. But I kept listening, just in case. My rig at the time was a Ten-Tec Argo 556. All I could hear for the first hour and 57 minutes of endless white noise. It was, to me, nerve-wracking--mainly because I actually did not know exactly where Jim was transmitting. And after a while I could no longer hear any callers. But I kept monitoring the reflector, reading the various postings. And SUDDENLY....out of all that white noise here came Jim calling a huge CQ FOX at about 25 over S-9! It only lasted about 20-25 seconds! I nearly fell off the chair, it was so loud and so unexpected. Luckily he heard me during that short burst, and we made contact. And I was in the log. Chuck Adams happened to come to Minneapolis a week or two later, and Jim and I asked him about this curious incident. And he confirmed that while rare, this kind of thing did indeed occasionally occur on 40 Metres, which is one reason he had decided to put the HF FOX Hunt on 40 Metres in the first place! Good luck tomorrow, everyone. And please wish me good luck, also. I have been Herr FOXxe several times, though it has been a while. I deliberately took myself out of the active lineup several seasons, to leave space for others to have a chance. This season I applied, and was chosen! I am excited to be back. It will be fun, but I am kinda nervous a bit. Hope I am up to the task. I want to work everybody in the pack. I will be listening UP. Always UP. Please do not call directly on top of where I am transmitting. Leave that frequence open, so folks can hear what I am sending. Thanks. CU and 73, --Doc/K0EVZ Poppa FOX W.D. (Doc) Lindsey dock0evz@... Re the FOX antenna
W.D. (Doc) Lindsey
Gang:
Several have wondered about the so-called "W5GI" antenna I will be using tomorrow evening as one of the FOXes. It is the *multiband* version produced by John W5GI. You can find out about it on his website = <www.w5gi.com>. Dick W0NTA steered me in this direction several months ago, and man oh man I am well-satisfied with it. The site suggests that the optimum installation is as a flattop. But I don't have tall trees or towers. So I have mine as a fairly flat inverted, which John says this works nearly as well, anyway. Signal reports have been very good thus far. I plan eventually to buy additional antennas from him, maybe some of the monobanders. I will be using some multibanders for our Disaster Relief units, for sure. NOTE: I have no commercial ties with the producer, but am merely a highly satisfied user. GL and 73, --Doc/K0EVZ W.D. FOX = K0EVZ for Thur Evening!
W.D. (Doc) Lindsey
Gang:
I have the honour of being your other FOX tomorrow evening! It has been a while since I have served as one of the Furry Critters, and I am really looking forward to it. My setup will be a full 5 watts to a W5DI multibander set up as a shallow inverted vee up 36'. This antenna seems to put out a good signal in all directions from central New Mexico. Have been using this antenna for several months with mostly excellent signal reports. I hope for great propagation, like we seemed to have had for the ARS Sprint this past Monday evening! So come one, come all and claim the pelt I already have cleaned up, dried and tanned with *your* name on it! Should be a fun evening. And remember the somewhat shorter time span we have this season. It all begins at 0200Z. GL and best 73, --Doc/K0EVZ Poppa FOX W.D. (Doc) Lindsey dock0evz@... EarthLink Revolves Around You. |
W1RT fox for 11/10
Hi there Hounds, Piggies, Fists, whatever ..
I have the honor of being tomorrow evening's quarry for the 40M QRP Fox Hunt, and I look forward to enpelting as many of you as possible. Conditions couldn't possibly be worse than my last fox outing :) You'll find me somewhere 'tween 7030 and 7050 promptly at 0200Z, working split as usual. I'll probably be running the TS-940SAT cranked down to 5W (where it usually is), and the new improved Big-Ass-Loop (now in the 450' range and a touch higher than before). Fox - winter hunts Teams
Hello everyone - after all these years of my manually figuring out the
scores for the Fox Hunt Teams, I'm happy to announce that a computer will be doing this from now on - Marshall, N1FN and Todd, N9NE have a computer program going that calculates ALL the fox scores, including the team scores - I will continue to take care of forming the Teams for the annual winter fox hunt and I will also keep track of the Clean Sweeps category as the program doesn't do this yet - - at the end of each winter season, I will forward the information to Ken LaRose, VE3ELA so he can make new engravings for the Team with the highest score and also for the Clean Sweep plaque to be presented at FDIM - - I would like to thank every individual who, over the years and many hunts, have helped me calculate the correct scores for each Team - I couldn't have done it without your help - thank you and best of luck in the fox hunts and have FUN! - 72 Bruce. 72/73 - Bruce ve5rc/ve5qrp - QRP-C#1, QRP-L#886, A1 Operator ????????
