Backwoods - K1 Garratt
开云体育Hi, I am currently building a K1 Garratt, I have studied Johns photos and articles in the NG&Industrial Reviews. I am currently building the chassis’s? have cut out and fitted the hornblocks with no problems – Question noting the extra mount to secure the motor to the frame. Are the hornblocks on the drive axle secured to ensure the cruciform stays secure on the motor shaft, Any help with this matter would be greatly appreciated ? Many thanks ? Hi Richard,
I'm not sure if my methods should be followed too closely - I questioned my sanity quite a few times in the 4 1/2 years it took me! To answer your question yes the end wheelsets were fixed within the hornblocks using IIRC a piece of wire. The other axle was compensated although this was probably overkill, although I do have significant superelevation through tight reverse curves. I have quite a few photos in my flickr album at: Regards John |
Hi John, Many thanks for info, . I must admit I'd thought it must have been something easy like that but was unsure whether there was another way I hadn't?thought of. I bought this garratt a few years ago at York MR Exhibition,?a project that had been started but badly assembled. I stripped it all down and started again. boiler and cab almost complete. so onto the chassis. this eventually will have DCC sound??The valvegear will be a separate sub assembly. I'll keep you updated on my progress, hopefully finished sometime next?year Many thanks for your help Kind Regards Richard ? |

I got one a similar way on eBay (doing anything with it is still some ways off, I might add ...).
It seems a lot never got built or at least never got finished.
Mind you my squirrel cupboard also has one on those rare (only 50 made) L & B kits that was recently mentioned here or in one of the mags!
Good luck with completing your build, let us know of any other issues you run into.
Gary

Hi Gary, I'll keep you informed of my progress, and pitfalls, hopefully few. I must admit I've only ever seen one running on a layout. John's article is the only well documented and account of the K1 build, although not built as a Backwoods ?Kit intended, a true masterpiece and something to be inspired by. I've only seen articles on 0 gauge Vivian Garratt's and a NGG16 no doubt someone will correct me. Are you intending to dip your toe in the garratt pond in the near future? Many thanks for your input and encouragement Kind Regards Richard |
开云体育Richard, About 3 or 4 years ago at the 7mm Narrow Gauge Association's Convention in Burton there was a gaggle of Garratts on display, mostly clustered around John C?and my track-making demo. Quite the love-in, and probably why John didn't manage to do any more track-building that day than bending the end of a bit of rail Cheers, David Hughes From: O14@... <O14@...> on behalf of richard.spen@...
