I'm not sure if my methods should be followed too closely - I questioned my sanity quite a few times in the 4 1/2 years it took me!
To answer your question yes the end wheelsets were fixed within the hornblocks using IIRC a piece of wire. The other axle was compensated although this was probably overkill, although I do have significant superelevation through tight reverse curves.
