Re: Packet - what do you consider a "logable" contact?

开云体育

Those that do not have the time to hang onto the mike for a contact miss out on the hobby’s intent and purpose – human contact.

?

And when disasters strike, the human element becomes paramount.

?

I find it ironic for police and miliary purposes despite all of the digital information, we get the job and mission done faster during its execution with the human voice.

?

Instant gratification – the difference between the “busy person” and the hunter, explorer and adventurer.

?

If life and in my case, engineering was so simple at the push of a mouse button, then innovation would die and we would still be driving horses around.

?

I find FT8 a bore requiring no skill as in other modes where the computer is just gathering data for human processing purposes.

?

As in a hobby that Amateur Radio is, time to do so means one is not too busy in my opinion.

?

I still find in military SIGINT, when we dropped the HUMINT and human operator out of the process, we missed several signals and/or their deadly purpose.

?

The lessons learned from the Israeli slaughter was too much Internet and automation vice the human operator.

?

In my Naval Aviation Officer days, all of the neat toys never replaced the human operator in the loop … too much data at times and having to sort out what is as important was solved by turning off these toys that some engineer thought would help, but never really asked us who prosecuted the attacks.

?

The more we digitalize what we do in amateur radio, the less human we all become and grow as insensitive to the human being needs as we see now across the globe as we have become a ID or a number rather than a name and a voice behind it, now all so impersonable.

Thanks all!

I think this is where we begin to loose interest by the "younger" generations. I do not see anywhere in the definition and purpose of amateur radio that we continue to do things the same way as years before. This includes only accepting person to person contact. Most of us just do not have time to hang around mike's and keyboard's anymore waiting for that perfect contact.

Why is a QSO not acceptable if I connect to a packet system via RF, leave a message on that system for a valid user of that system, and then get a return message (or ACK that the message was received)? This is totally via radio, and the other station can reply to that message when they desire.

I understand digipeating being borderline, but message drop off and retrieval later? I do not think that is cheating as long as it uses radio.

Thanks all for your opinions, I really do appreciate and value, even if I do not totally agree.

Thanks for the suggestion. ? Downloaded and tried coolterm … can’t get it to work properly though, after the first command each line just starts with a “.” ? and it doesn’t seem to recognize any escape characters. ?Also receive text doesn’t show immediately … main com / parity/flow control parameters are correct and it connects but somehow flow control and special characters are off . ?Putty works fine now at least. ?Just have to do the initialization commands manually every time with putty?

Hi Dave,

?

Thank you for the reply!

TNC lights – power light is on (red), GPS fix light is on (green), KISS/Conn light is off (so I’m not in KISS mode, and it’s not connected to anyone), PTT light goes red when transmitting, otherwise off.

?

Yes, there is TX going out … using an IC-7700, TNC connected via the ACC socket in the back.? That connections works since I can successfully use the TNC in RPR mode to send out APRS signals (and I see myself on aprs.fi then).??

?

In HF packet mode, there’s no PTT or HF going out when I just issue a connect command though (ESC C callsign).? Anything I type after that is sent to the callsign I used in the connect command though.

Then RF is going out (right now about 80 Watts as I kept the TX audio pretty low) and I can hear the outgoing signal in monitor mode on the transceiver speaker ….

?

Somehow also when I try a disconnect command “ESC D” ?it says “invalid command: D” … which is weird??? Somehow seems like connect C and Disconnect commands aren’t working right?

?

Thanks again

Re: Net 30 (or 30M Packet)

Hi Chris,
Firstly, I'm surprised to find this topic here in this group.
Secondly, I should have provided the link to APRSThursday - here it is...

The "net" is a check-in that is held every Thursday from 0000Z to 2359Z. There's usually about 400 of us that check in from around the world.

I've played around with WinRPR too but found that PinPoint works great with UZ7HO's SoundModem.

Re: Net 30 (or 30M Packet)

Yes 10.147.30 USB is used for RP APRS, and above that a little is HFP aprs as mentioned in last email.

We used to hang out from time to time around 10.144 LSB for general use ie, keybd/BBS.
