Hi Dave,

(Disclaimer: I'm one of the developers on the FreeDV project.)

Some basic information can be found over at?, along with some audio samples on the various blog posts on the FreeDV website (for example:?). I'm not fully sure about your current setup but it's very probable that RADE will be an improvement over what you used before, at least with voice quality.

Let me also pile on the Linux fan club. Definitely love doing radio on it.

If anyone tries Opensuse Tumbleweed (and I do recommend it because it is a rolling release and yet it's stable) and would like my repo list. Ping me and I'll send it along. I ahve the encessary repos in there for radio and KDE and devel also. Al are Suse OBS repos (official build) except for the M$ edge one. SO things get automatically rebuilt as version and lib changes come out for the main OS. It's seamless.

TW is a KDE distro but it does support about any desktop environment out there. I'm a big KDE fan, so I tend to like a distro that has full integration with it. TW does that and it'll let you chose the DE you want to use, or several of them and all will work as you expect.

Hi Dave,

I just started to use my other rig (IC-7300) to operate FT8 on 40m and I noticed that the IDD scale had replaced the SWR scale on the main flrig window. (I changed the background colour to distinguish my two radios.)

I have put in-line three screenshots:

A. Receive mode: Looks the normal receive view.

B: Transmit, no audio: IDD is about 3A that looks OK for this mode. But main screen says its showing IDD rather than SWR, and not showing the 3A IDD.

C: transmit, 50% carrier: IDD on meters window looks correct, The main window is showing IDD scale, but it looks like SWR value.

Thanks for sorting the scale/number alignment.

73 and good night.

Re: Unusual question re WSL2

If you get hung up on the ports thing Joel, get in contact with CodeWeaver's and they'll help you figure out exactly what to do to get it working. Thosee folks really do understand the guts of Windows and MAc and Linux and hjow to get things to play.

It was worth it for me.

I see another new VARA version and I am about to test that on Crossover too.

I do have a VirtualBox VM that I can fire up that runs Windows 10 Pro here on the Opensuse Tumbleweed Linux box, but unless I need to, it takes a lot more time and work and resources to do that than just launching the app ina small bottle in Crossover.

Definitely make sure your Crossover version is up to date though. As I recall there aren't any Linux or Mac betas right now, but if you sign up for their beta tester program you can get access to these. And they'll run alongside the release version.

I have 4nec2 and AN-SOF running on Crossover nicely (those are antenna modelling applications for Windows). I needed help from Codeweaver's on the 3D part of 4nec2, but it all works as expected now.

Re: Unusual question re WSL2

This thread has been fortuitous for me... I have a 2015 11" MBA that went EOSL last month. While I could circumvent the OS checks and install a later version of macOS, the last time I did that, there were issues; not least of which was OS responsiveness. I also have a 2014 13" MBA that went EOSL in 2023 or 2022. I loaded Linux Mint Cinnamon on it and it has run fine so far. The 2014 really could use a new battery and the hinge could be tightened up; otherwise, the hardware is in pretty good shape. The 2015 is in even better shape and has a 1 TB SSD. I just couldn't (cannot) see buying a new laptop for amateur radio.
?
I currently have a CrossOver subscription for my main computer - an M2 Max Mac Studio; however, with its ARM processor, it's hard to run some amateur radio software especially if you're trying to configure a serial port (I have yet to figure this out). When I still had an Intel-based iMac, I had a subscription to Parallels. I resubscribed to Parallels after I bought my current Mac but I ran into a similar serial port issues with it - Parallels on the M2 runs an ARM-based version of Windows Pro (only) and I was absolutely *not* paying for an OS. Granted, you don't have to for it to work but I don't like the "you really need to pay for this" watermark.
?
I'm in the process of installing Winlink Express and VARA HF on my 2014 MBA. Once I get done with my honey-do's for the day, I will figure out the serial ports (if memory serves, I have to go into the Bottle registry and edit some settings) to get this to work with my IC-7300.
?
Thanks for the thread giving me the motivation to continue using perfectly good hardware.
?

Joel - W4JBB

Suggest you scale your 705 IDD measurement to a scale of 50.

?? ???? ??? mtr = 50.0 * mtr / 241.0;
?? ???? ??? if (mtr > 50) mtr = 50;

I think this should be 40, rather than 50 to keep the measurement in line with the number value. So the scale is now measuring dA (deciamps).

The attached (idd25-2A.png) is with the scale 25 (but image_idd50 - see below). Ignore the SWR - something has gone wrong with my antenna (I'll need to look at this in daylight - when we get any at 55N!) and both the actual rig display and external SWR bridge are showing high SWR. But the rig display itself is showing just over 2A, so 22 or 23 on the display looks right.

Then change

void cbALC_IDD_SWR()
{
?? ?switch (meter_image) {
?? ???? case ALC_IMAGE:
?? ???? ??? if (selrig->has_idd_control) {
?? ???? ??? ??? btnALC_IDD_SWR->image(image_idd25);
?? ???? ??? ??? meter_image = IDD_IMAGE;
?? ???? ??? ??? sldrIDD->show();
?? ???? ??? ??? {
?? ???? ??? ??? ??? guard_lock serial_lock(&mutex_serial, "40");
?? ???? ??? ??? ??? trace(1, "cbALC_IDD_SWR()? 2");
?? ???? ??? ??? ??? selrig->select_idd();
?? ???? ??? ??? }
?? ???? ??? ??? break;
?? ???? ??? }
?? ???? case IDD_IMAGE:

to image_idd50

Let us know if that works for you.

I found no differences between the two. See images (idd25 and idd50).

David

I think this should be 40, rather than 50 to keep the measurement in line with the number value. So the scale is now measuring dA (deciamps).

The attached (idd25-2A.png) is with the scale 25 (but image_idd50 - see below). Ignore the SWR - something has gone wrong with my antenna (I'll need to look at this in daylight - when we get any at 55N!) and both the actual rig display and external SWR bridge are showing high SWR. But the rig display itself is showing just over 2A, so 22 or 23 on the display looks right.

Then change

void cbALC_IDD_SWR()
{
?? ?switch (meter_image) {
?? ???? case ALC_IMAGE:
?? ???? ??? if (selrig->has_idd_control) {
?? ???? ??? ??? btnALC_IDD_SWR->image(image_idd25);
?? ???? ??? ??? meter_image = IDD_IMAGE;
?? ???? ??? ??? sldrIDD->show();
?? ???? ??? ??? {
?? ???? ??? ??? ??? guard_lock serial_lock(&mutex_serial, "40");
?? ???? ??? ??? ??? trace(1, "cbALC_IDD_SWR()? 2");
?? ???? ??? ??? ??? selrig->select_idd();
?? ???? ??? ??? }
?? ???? ??? ??? break;
?? ???? ??? }
?? ???? case IDD_IMAGE:

to image_idd50

Let us know if that works for you.

I found no differences between the two. See images (idd25 and idd50).

David

PS. After I change IC705.cxx and rerun make I get the following error message:

Look's like there's a missing #include or #define. I have to run 'make distclean' etc to get a clean compile. Just running 'make clean' first also fails. This doesn't happen when I modify support.cxx.

I've copied the get_idd() method from IC-7300 and changed the calculation to max of 4A and it seems to work. It looks like the scale maximum of 25A is fixed. Modified IC705.h and IC705.cxx attached (based on this morning's download of alpha .77).

Thanks Dave,

Obviously it's not got the mod I did to IC705.h/.cxx. But it selected the 5A range OK. I know it's a minor issue but the difference between the ALC and IDD scales was very obvious to me - the numbers don't align! The scales do, but the numbers don't - see image. They're a pixel or two out.

I'll rework the 705 code and get back to you.

Re: Unusual question re WSL2

Also to all on the thread, keep in mind that there is a commercial version of WINE called Crossover by CodeWeavers, who also supplies code and improvements to the WINE project.

You can setup several bottles if needed with different configurations. And you get support to get applications running that might need alternate dlls or things installed. Most of the stuff I use just runs, but I did need a quick tip from them on getting 3d display working on 4nec2 for antenna modelling.

It's not free but a year's worth is about the cost of a single dinner with your significant other. So for me it's worth it.

I haven't tried it with VARA so thanks for the tip. I'll do that and if it works I'll write it up on their web site and advocate for it.

As to Linux for ham radio, I like a rolling release so I never have to deal with yearly upgrades and I get all of the stuff right away. Opensuse Tumbleweed is my distro of choice and has been for many years. It's stable and has repos for anything ham or radio related that you might want (and anything else too).
