FreeDV (was Re: Best Linux for Ham Radio)

Rick.

How does the later FreeDV handle high levels of man-made noise (especially pulse type noise) these days?

The earlier 1.8.x version (I built from source on Mint) was terrible, the slightest QRM would kill decoding for up to half a second, making it worse than analogue SSB under such conditions. Higher levels would prevent the decoder from "locking" to the signal at all.

(With a "clear" signal, it's quality was excellent, but there again, so can analogue SSB under the same clear conditions.)

I have S8+ normal "ambient" noise on 80m here these days, and very little of it is under my control in any way, so I gave up on FreeDV.? :-(

But, if it's more robust now, I may look again.
