Re: Best Linux for Ham Radio

LMAO?

Well put Glenn. N1MM tracks contest for me and ACL is by far my favorite general logger. Windows did an update and now once again ACL won't read the VFO on my IC 7610. I have been lazy and haven't reinstalled drivers to see if that would?work. This is one reason I went to Linux.?

Right now I run CQRLOG on Fedora but haven't gotten it to work with Mint. I run the latest release of both.

Re: FreeDV (was Re: Best Linux for Ham Radio)

Hi.

Well,? I'm doing this on the "standby" laptop, as the main shack PC, that was running LMDE6 rather well, has objected to something, and committed suicide!

Looks like I'll be flattening the thing (after some live CD driven backups) and starting fresh.? Perhaps with a different flavor of Linux even!? (It boots to a login prompt, but after that, it just sits there.? No option in the grub menu for any command line session either!)

Rudimentary checks don't indicate any hardware failure, but I think I'll run memtest86 and spinrite6.1 too from bootable media, "just in case", before I do that, but for now, the standby lappy (also running LMDE6) will have to handle the day-to-day stuff.

Anyway, any experiments with FreeDV, and the work on Flrig I was doing with the IC-R9000 will have to wait as a result.

"I'll be back", but not sure yet when, as there is lots of other non-Ham stuff going on here at present too.

Re: Best Linux for Ham Radio

In response to the question about UDEV, I am using the UDEV rules to keep my USB devices on pseudo static USB ports.? The problem I had was every time I booted, the radio would be on a different usb.? For example /dev/ttyUSB0 today and tomorrow /dev/ttyUSB1.? It became very frustrating very fast.? Enter UDEV rules.? When you look at the properties of the plugged in USB devices they have attributes that, most of the time, distinguish one from another.? Attributes like manufacturer, model, and serial number in many cases.? So, you write rules in a udev rules file that essentially maps these devices to a symlink with a friendly name.? So, in CQRLOG for example, instead of specifying /dev/ttyUSB0 as your CAT serial port, you would use something like /dev/ttyUSB7300 for your IC-7300.

Rpi 0 2W and SDXC card problem - solved

G'day,
My first post here so forgive me if not the right place.
The issue involves moving the excellent G4WNC software package from a slow 32 GB card on a pi 0 2w to a faster SanDisk 64 GB SDXC card to be used on the pi 0. The software had been running well but very slowly on the 32 GB card which did not pass the pi diagnostics for read/write speed.
Using the Windows (11 on a Dell all-in-one) Raspberry Pi Imager the .img was written to the 64 GB card. No problems. The pi 0 didn't boot and hung in the sequence after finding the SDXC card. Other efforts were made with etcher and the Win32DiskImager. Same result hanging in the same place.
The problem was solved by using dd on a debian laptop to copy the 32 GB card image to a file on the laptop and then reverse the process to write to the 64 GB card. This was very slow ~30 mins each way but to my surprise it worked! The pi 0 booted fine, passed the diagnostics and runs the included software (Fldigi WSJTX etc) much more quickly.
I guess the point of interest is that the Pi Imager didn't handle the write but dd did. The 64 GB card was formated exFAT not FAT32 but I would have thought that an imaging process wouldn't care but just overwrite everything even the FAT.
An LLM that I hope someone who knows more than me can explain.
Regards
Richard Katsch

Re: FreeDV (was Re: Best Linux for Ham Radio)

Dave,
?
I cannot speak to noise handling capability of RADAE (yet) because I have little to no noise here (yes I know, I am very fortunate)
?
What little I have played with RADAE, It takes very little signal to noise ratio for it to produce readable audio.
?
It is a little "wider' than the other "700" modes.? and maybe a little wider than 1600.? Maybe similar to 2020/2020B
?
I have tried all the other modes from 160-6m and NVIS propagation affects most of the modes a little differently than sky-wave (F2/E) type propagation.
?
I found that RADAE works VERY well on 40m using NVIS during late afternoon between the PNW Seattle/Tacoma area to Eastern Wa (Spokane) etc.?? Signals that barely moved the s-meter from zero still produced literally "full-quieting" audio with little to no garbling.
?
In AUG 2023 I did a little test with an Oregon station I talk to frequently on 160 & 75m from here near Tacoma WA.
?
We were on or around 3750kHz using 700E.? I was running 1W with the IC705 and the other station was running 5W.?
?
It was around 8-9 PM and the summertime lightning/atmospheric noise and static was running S-9 or better.
?
We talked using FreeDV at the above power levels for about 30-45min in complete silence (except for the voice audio)
?
It would have been nearly impossible and very irritating to hold the same conversation using SSB with all that noise using the power levels we were running
?

Hi Dave,

I just started to use my other rig (IC-7300) to operate FT8 on 40m and I noticed that the IDD scale had replaced the SWR scale on the main flrig window. (I changed the background colour to distinguish my two radios.)

I've been watching FreeDV and FreeDATA development.

The audio comparison between SSB and FreeDV with RADE is amazing!

There are some processing artifacts but clarity and power are worth it.

FreeDATA is going to bring another equally valuable tool to Hams.

Thanks for all the work that everyone is doing!

Hi Dave,

(Disclaimer: I'm one of the developers on the FreeDV project.)

Some basic information can be found over at?, along with some audio samples on the various blog posts on the FreeDV website (for example:?). I'm not fully sure about your current setup but it's very probable that RADE will be an improvement over what you used before, at least with voice quality.

Thanks,

How does the later FreeDV handle high levels of man-made noise
(especially pulse type noise) these days?

The earlier 1.8.x version (I built from source on Mint) was terrible,
the slightest QRM would kill decoding for up to half a second, making it
worse than analogue SSB under such conditions. Higher levels would
prevent the decoder from "locking" to the signal at all.

(With a "clear" signal, it's quality was excellent, but there again, so
can analogue SSB under the same clear conditions.)

I have S8+ normal "ambient" noise on 80m here these days, and very
little of it is under my control in any way, so I gave up on FreeDV.? :-(

But, if it's more robust now, I may look again.
