Rpi 0 2W and SDXC card problem - solved

G'day,
My first post here so forgive me if not the right place.
The issue involves moving the excellent G4WNC software package from a slow 32 GB card on a pi 0 2w to a faster SanDisk 64 GB SDXC card to be used on the pi 0. The software had been running well but very slowly on the 32 GB card which did not pass the pi diagnostics for read/write speed.
Using the Windows (11 on a Dell all-in-one) Raspberry Pi Imager the .img was written to the 64 GB card. No problems. The pi 0 didn't boot and hung in the sequence after finding the SDXC card. Other efforts were made with etcher and the Win32DiskImager. Same result hanging in the same place.
The problem was solved by using dd on a debian laptop to copy the 32 GB card image to a file on the laptop and then reverse the process to write to the 64 GB card. This was very slow ~30 mins each way but to my surprise it worked! The pi 0 booted fine, passed the diagnostics and runs the included software (Fldigi WSJTX etc) much more quickly.
I guess the point of interest is that the Pi Imager didn't handle the write but dd did. The 64 GB card was formated exFAT not FAT32 but I would have thought that an imaging process wouldn't care but just overwrite everything even the FAT.
An LLM that I hope someone who knows more than me can explain.
Regards
