LOS ANGELES - The Music Center Education Division hosts its 24th Institute for Educators to be held July 9 -13 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion located at First and Grand in downtown Los Angeles.
The Institute is a hands-on professional development program developed by the Center's Education Division in which K-8 educators can expand their knowledge of the arts and learn how to integrate the arts into classroom teaching strategies.
This year's theme, The Arts and Literacy: Building Imagination, Critical Thinking and Comprehension Skills, showcases professional artists who are skilled in dance, theatre, music and visual arts. Artists will train educators through live performances, workshops, small group application and free instructional materials. Highlights of the five-day forum include:
-----STORYTELLING AND THEATRE - Great Leap - Nobuko Miyamoto, Louise Mita, Calvin Jung and Paulina Sahagun These talented artists use theatre, music and dance to open windows to their worlds with personal tales. In addition to performing, Great Leap actively engages participants in a daylong workshop to explore movement, music and storytelling from personal history and cultural heritage perspectives.
-----DANCE- Anna Djanbazian A choreographer, dancer and teacher, Anna Djanbazian established the Djanbazian Dance Academy in Glendale where her work continues a legacy from her father, Sarkis Djanbazian, recognized as a Nation Treasure by the Shah of Iran. -----VISUAL ARTS- Eugenia Butler Multimeadia artist Eugenia Butler is an internationally recognized artist, teacher and scholar whose work has been collected by numerous prestigious institutions. She involved educators in exciting and confidence-building art projects using line, color, symbol, language and form. Creative and critical thinking skills are stimulated as participants are led into explorations of difference ways of seeing and mapping experiences with visual imagery.

Participants will gain an understanding of the language of music and specific Mexican song forms and will learn, practice and create songs and rhythmic patterns.
The music component of the 2001 Institute for Educators is funded in part by The ASCAP Foundation. The Foundation's grant of $10,000 supports the involvement of ASCAP composer and musician Ed Barguiarena. The ASCAP Foundation, established in 1975, is a non-profit organization which supports and promotes charitable education programs in the field of music.

This work presents the familiar biblical story of the Israelite hero Samson as retold in the words of the great English poet John Milton, and set to music by Handel:
* We hear the exciting contest between the Israelites and the Philistines to determine whose god is really God. * We recall the famous love story of Samson and Delilah, which ends with the betrayal of Samson. * We feel the anguish of Samson after he has been blinded and imprisoned by his enemies. * We hear the familiar ending of the story, when Samson with his own hands brings down the temple of Dagon, destroying thousands of Philistines, and sacrificing himself in the process. * And finally, we rejoice with the Israelites in a mighty hymn of praise to Jehovah as they give thanks for the life of their hero, Samson.

GW Bush GW Global Warming
Dear Friend:
Sorry to trouble you with this electronic petition but this one is worth it. This is one that is NOT useless, because it will be sent directly to the
White House, which ought to be effective. If you LOOK at the addresses below you will see that INDEED THE WORLD IS WATCHING.
The issue is Bush's infuriating and frightening decision to withdraw from the Kyoto protocol on global warming. President Bush recently announced that the United States Government will not honor its commitments under the 1997 Kyoto Protocol to reduce greenhouse gases. The United States produce 25% of the world's carbon dioxide, a gas that is believed to be the main contributor to global warming. Rising global temperatures are known to! raise sea levels, and change precipitation and other climate conditions.
Changing climates alter forests, crop yields, and water supplies. It could also threaten human health, and harm birds, fish, and many types of ecosystems. An increase in weather-related disasters will occur, deserts may expand into existing range-lands, densely populated coastal areas will flood and large numbers of people will have to move. Show you disagree with the Bush Administration's decision to withdraw from the 1997 Kyoto Protocol on Global Warming. Urge President Bush to review his policy in this matter and devise a comprehensive plan to reduce US emissions of so-called greenhouse gases.
PLEASE Sign your name, town and country of residence at the bottom of this e-mail, copy the entire text of this e-mail (do NOT use the forward button), into a new message and send it to as many people as possible. If you see 100 people have signed this message before you, send this e-mail to the White House at president@... <mailto:president@...> to show Mr. Bush the world is watching. Then start a fresh copy of this message with your name as the first signer.
Thank you.
