The Music Center Brings Professional Artists to Train Teachers during Five-Day Forum

LOS ANGELES - The Music Center Education Division hosts its 24th Institute for Educators to be held July 9 -13 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion located at First and Grand in downtown Los Angeles.

The Institute is a hands-on professional development program developed by the Center's Education Division in which K-8 educators can expand their knowledge of the arts and learn how to integrate the arts into classroom teaching strategies.

This year's theme, The Arts and Literacy: Building Imagination, Critical Thinking and Comprehension Skills, showcases professional artists who are skilled in dance, theatre, music and visual arts. Artists will train educators through live performances, workshops, small group application and free instructional materials.
Highlights of the five-day forum include:

-----STORYTELLING AND THEATRE - Great Leap - Nobuko Miyamoto, Louise Mita, Calvin Jung and Paulina Sahagun
These talented artists use theatre, music and dance to open windows to their worlds with personal tales. In addition to performing, Great Leap actively engages participants in a daylong workshop to explore movement, music and storytelling from personal history and cultural heritage perspectives.

-----DANCE- Anna Djanbazian
A choreographer, dancer and teacher, Anna Djanbazian established the Djanbazian Dance Academy in Glendale where her work continues a legacy from her father, Sarkis Djanbazian, recognized as a Nation Treasure by the Shah of Iran. She and her dance company will present a lecture and performance contrasting dance traditions and styles and will guide teachers in exploring traditional dance, story narrative and architectural form through improvising and creating group dances.

-----VISUAL ARTS- Eugenia Butler
Multimeadia artist Eugenia Butler is an internationally recognized artist, teacher and scholar whose work has been collected by numerous prestigious institutions. She involved educators in exciting and confidence-building art projects using line, color, symbol, language and form. Creative and critical thinking skills are stimulated as participants are led into explorations of difference ways of seeing and mapping experiences with visual imagery.

-----MUSIC- Ed Barguiarena, Fermin Herrera and Conjunto Hueyapan
Presenting a variety of Mexican Sones in the styles of Jarocho, Huasteco and Mariachi, ASCAP composer and musician Ed Barguiarena and guest artists Fermin Herrera and Conjunto Hueyapan will teach participants about the roots of Mexican music, the differences of each style and cultural influences that shaped this vibrant music. Participants will gain an understanding of the language of music and specific Mexican song forms and will learn, practice and create songs and rhythmic patterns.

The music component of the 2001 Institute for Educators is funded in part by The ASCAP Foundation. The Foundation's grant of $10,000 supports the involvement of ASCAP composer and musician Ed Barguiarena. The ASCAP Foundation, established in 1975, is a non-profit organization which supports and promotes charitable education programs in the field of music.

The 2001 Institute for Educators is presented in association with the Los Angeles Unified School District, Los Angeles County Office of Education and UCLA Education Extension. The fee for the five-day program is $365 for Los Angeles Unified School District teachers or those with other Southern California schools or districts that are members of the Music Center Education Division. The fee is $465 for non-members. Both LAUSD salary points and UCLA Education Extension credit may be earned by completing the Institute and a written project.

* We hear the exciting contest between the Israelites and the Philistines to
determine whose god
is really God.
* We recall the famous love story of Samson and Delilah, which ends with the
betrayal of Samson.
* We feel the anguish of Samson after he has been blinded and imprisoned by
his enemies.
* We hear the familiar ending of the story, when Samson with his own hands
brings down the temple
of Dagon, destroying thousands of Philistines, and sacrificing himself in
the process.
* And finally, we rejoice with the Israelites in a mighty hymn of praise to
Jehovah as they give thanks
for the life of their hero, Samson.

The HeArt Project is a non-profit arts organization that firmly believes in the power of the arts to positively influence and enrich the lives of Los Angeles teenagers. The Project currently brings a i j yearlong series of free workshops to nine Los Angeles continuation high schools and one housing community center located from South Central to Downtown to the Valley. The workshops are an integral part of each school's curriculum and provide a missing arts component to their education. Without The HeArt Project, the teenagers we serve would have no other access to the arts.

In January 2001, The HeArt Project doubled the size of its program to reach twice as many teenagers with our yearlong arts program. We also moved our offices to the USC neighborhoodwhere we are closer to our students and able to collaborate with the University.

This year, participating teenagers have worked with artists in architecture, mural design, dance, poetry, bookmaking, and architecture/historic preservation to create new works and challenge themselves in new and inventive ways. Each 10-week workshop culminates in a public presentation at a local arts center. In the past, students have presented their work at locations including The Getty, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Museum of Tolerance, the Huntington Library,Central Library, and The Museum of Contemporary Art.

"Visual Emotion"

Marcia Jones emerged on the Brooklyn underground scene in 1995. A self-taught

performance painter doing live collaborations with other artists at poetry
readings and concerts, visually interpreting the energy of the performing
artist, music, and audience members onto canvas. She has traveled
extensively, touring with the outspoken women's collective SWARM, with
poet/actor/recording artist Saul Williams and with Trip-Hop/Acid Jazz Band
Wax Poetics (Atlantic Records) including featured performances at the
Istanbul International Jazz Festival. She has shared the stage with such

GW Bush GW Global Warming

Nancy Macko

Dear Friend:

Sorry to trouble you with this electronic petition but this one is worth
it.
This is one that is NOT useless, because it will be sent directly to the

White House, which ought to be effective. If you LOOK at the addresses
below
you will see that INDEED THE WORLD IS WATCHING.

The issue is Bush's infuriating and frightening decision to withdraw
from
the Kyoto protocol on global warming. President Bush recently announced
that
the United States Government will not honor its commitments under the
1997
Kyoto Protocol to reduce greenhouse gases. The United States produce 25%
of
the world's carbon dioxide, a gas that is believed to be the main
contributor to global warming. Rising global temperatures are known to!
raise sea levels, and change precipitation and other climate conditions.

Changing climates alter forests, crop yields, and water supplies. It
could
also threaten human health, and harm birds, fish, and many types of
ecosystems. An increase in weather-related disasters will occur, deserts
may
expand into existing range-lands, densely populated coastal areas will
flood
and large numbers of people will have to move. Show you disagree with
the
Bush Administration's decision to withdraw from the 1997 Kyoto Protocol
on
Global Warming. Urge President Bush to review his policy in this matter
and
devise a comprehensive plan to reduce US emissions of so-called
greenhouse
gases.

PLEASE Sign your name, town and country of residence at the bottom of
this
e-mail, copy the entire text of this e-mail (do NOT use the forward
button),
into a new message and send it to as many people as possible. If you see
100
people have signed this message before you, send this e-mail to the
White
House at president@... <mailto:president@...> to
show
Mr. Bush the world is watching. Then start a fresh copy of this message
with
your name as the first signer.

Thank you.

World music and dance at Japan America Theatre June 9

The Japan America Theater and UCLA¡¯s Center for Intercultural
Performance co-presents "Creating Across Cultures: An APPEX Experience,"
on Saturday, June 9 at 8:00 p.m. at the Japan America Theater, located
at 244 South San Pedro Street, Los Angeles (Little Tokyo).

This special event will be an evening length concert of dance, theatre
and world music, reuniting artists who have participated in the 1999 &
2000 Asia Pacific Performance Exchange (APPEX) program. APPEX was
created by the UCLA¡¯s Center for Intercultural Performance and the
Department of World Arts & Cultures as an international artists
residency program that promotes cross-cultural and interdisciplinary
research.

The evening will include exciting and diverse works from dance
choreographers Pichet Klunchuen (Thailand), Eko Supriyanto (Indonesia)
and Cheng-Chieh Yu (Taiwan and the United States), theater directors
Peng Jingquan (China) and Dan Kwong (United States), and composers I
Dewa Putu Berata (Indonesia) and Kenny Endo (United States).

"Creating Across Cultures¡" includes three world premieres. The first,
"One Hundredth Day" by choreographer and director Pichet Klunchuen
(Thailand), is a meditation on the cycle of death and rebirth, created
in collaboration with four Los Angeles dancers during his Spring 2001
residency at UCLA. The second, a new version of "Sleeping with
Strangers" by performance artist Dan Kwong (Los Angeles) and theater
director Peng Jingquan (China), is a theater piece illustrating the
ironies and miscommunications that occur when 35 artists live in the
same house.

The third is the APPEX Music Ensemble, making its world premiere with
three new works by composers I Dewa Putu Berata (Bali), Kenny Endo
(Hawaii) and Lenny Seidman (Philadelphia), with guest artist I Nyoman
Wenten (Bali/Los Angeles). These composers are
known for their work in traditional music, dance and theater forms as
well as for their creative East-West fusion of composition and
performance work.

The evening¡¯s program features the West Coast premiere of "My Father¡¯s
Teeth in My Mother¡¯s Mouth," a dance solo created and performed by
Cheng-Chieh Yu (Taiwan/Los Angeles). The piece is based upon the
artist¡¯s own conflicted dental identity and inspired by her journey
through its reconstruction. The scenic designer is Peter Melville.

"Sosok," a new work by choreographer Eko Supriyanto (Java), has an
original score by I Dewa Putu Berata (Bali). Using traditional and
contemporary dance forms, five dancers and eight musicians journey into
the world of Javanese village life in this celebration of women.

American Cultural and Community Center (JACCC) members and $15 for
students and seniors with valid ID; balcony seats are $18 for general

On June 16, 2001, an exhibit will open at William Grant Still Art
Center showcasing the rich body of Los Angeles-area wall art created
African American artists. The exhibit will feature 30 color photographs
of murals. Highlights include images of Golden State Insurance Company's
two historical panels by renowned artists Charles Alston and Hale Woodruff,
Richard Wyatt's tribute to jazz greats at Capitol Records in Hollywood,
Charles White's only west coast mural of Mary McLeod Bethune in the
Exposition Park public library., and Noni Olabisi's powerful 1992 portrait
of a community in pain, "Freedom Won't Wait," located in South L.A.

The exhibit is curated by Robin J. Dunitz, a board member of the
Mural Conservancy of Los Angeles, who has been documenting local murals for
more that 10 years. She is the author or co-author of three books on
murals, including a new one (with co-author James Prigoff), titled Walls of
Heritage, Walls of Pride: African American Murals. Most of the
photographs in the exhibit are from this book, which will also form the
basis of a larger exhibit, national in scope, that will be at California
State University, Dominguez Hills, next February. The book, as well as a
postcard book of local Afrcian American murals, will be on sale at the
gallery.

Many of the participating artists will be on hand at the opening
day reception, to be held as part of the Art Center's Juneteenth
celebration.
