Handel¡¯s Oratorio ¡°Samson¡± - Sunday, June 10
George Frideric Handel¡¯s dramatic oratorio ¡°Samson¡± will be performed this
Sunday, June 10,
at 4:00 p.m. at St. Alban¡¯s Episcopal Church, 580 Hilgard Avenue (at
Westholme) in Westwood,
just east of the UCLA campus.
This work presents the familiar biblical story of the Israelite hero Samson
as retold in the words of the great
English poet John Milton, and set to music by Handel:
* We hear the exciting contest between the Israelites and the Philistines to
determine whose god
is really God.
* We recall the famous love story of Samson and Delilah, which ends with the
betrayal of Samson.
* We feel the anguish of Samson after he has been blinded and imprisoned by
his enemies.
* We hear the familiar ending of the story, when Samson with his own hands
brings down the temple
of Dagon, destroying thousands of Philistines, and sacrificing himself in
the process.
* And finally, we rejoice with the Israelites in a mighty hymn of praise to
Jehovah as they give thanks
for the life of their hero, Samson.
