W. J. T. Mitchell

"The Work of Art in the Age of Biocybernetic Reproduction"

W. J. T. Mitchell is a noted writer and theorist whose interests include
literature, the visual arts, iconography, and popular culture. He is
especially well known for his keen analysis of the word-image
relationship. In his recent publication "The Last Dinosaur Book: The Life
and Times of a Cultural Icon," he examines the pervasive role of
dinosaurs in the popular consciousness. Mitchell has served as Gaylord
Donnelly Distinguished Service Professor of English at the University of
Chicago since 1989. In his talk at Art Center, he will attempt to update
Walter Benjamin?s famous essay on "mechanical" reproduction for our era.
He will consider some recent exhibitions that have focused on genetics,
cloning, and biological engineering and address more general questions
such as the notion of the originality of the artwork, the idea of
reproduction, and the concept of the "age" or period.

Sunland-Tujunga Branch Music with Mark Humpheys

Jamie O'Halloran

TUJUNGA. On Tuesday, February 27 at 7:00 p.m., the Friends of the
Sunland-Tujunga Branch of the Los Angeles Public Library present a musical
evening with singer-songwriter Mark Humphreys. The program is part of a
monthly series during which the Friends will bring live music to the
library on fourth Tuesdays. The program is free and all are welcome.

Humphreys is a singer-songwriter in the folk tradition whose recordings and
performances have won critical acclaim. Humphreys, who will be accompanied
by guitarist John-Michael Kaye, has long been one of the most popular
singer-songwriters on L.A.'s accoustic music scene. "As with all good folk
singers," writes Los Angeles Times columnist Al Martinez, "Humphreys' music
tells stories…"

Humphreys' fourth, and most recent, album, "Songs at the Moon", released on
his Trough Records label, follows the successful "A Lust and a Longing",
"Angelenos" and "Leap Day." Since 1995 Mark has devoted all of his time and
energy to music-writing, performing, touring across the country and
producing albums for other artists.

Music continues at the Branch with the return of Sunland's own Celtic
ensemble Highland Sun on March 27. Jazz composer and pianist Jim Gitter
will be back, by popular demand, on April 24 to present an evening of
George & Ira Gershwin.

The Friends of the Sunland-Tujunga Branch of the Los Angeles Public Library
is a private, non-profit organization that sponsors literary events and
provides financial and volunteer support to the Sunland-Tujunga Branch of
the Los Angeles Public Library. Its mission is to encourage children to
become life-long readers and library patrons. To donate books or volunteer,
call the Branch at (818) 352-4481.

The Branch is located at 7771 Foothill Blvd., Tujunga. Parking is available
and the library is fully accessible to people who use wheelchairs. Call

Dear Artists of LIFE,

Canvasing for amazingly talented artists as volunteers to help get our
website fully functional. It's pretty close, but needs people
proficient in 1) Photoshop and 2) web design to nudge it along so it can
really be serving people. Doesn't have to be the same people, but both
need handling.

Will depend, obviously, on your catching the vision, so suggest you read
about us below and also go to the site:

................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

The Art of LIVING

THE BASIS OF OUR WORK

The Art of LIVING (TAOL) Coalition was formally established as a
non-profit organization on April 11, 1998 [under the aegis of Social &
Environmental Entrepreneurs (SEE)] with the aim of helping individuals
to become more aware of their potential and more empowered in their
lives.

The basis of our work is grounded in 20 years in-depth exploration in
human excellence, communications, creativity, community building and how
we effect positive change. Since producing our first large event in
1996, The Art of LIVING Coalition has actively been taking the framework
of the art of living and its principles out to people in both large and
small experiential settings. This has involved an extended
multi-generational community throughout Southern California as well as
strategic alliances with individuals and organizations throughout the
planet. In the process, we have video and audiotaped our exploration of
what it means to be artists of our own lives. Five documentaries are
shot and seeking completion monies, and a global television show - The
Art of LIVING: A Mystery School for the 21st Century - is in
development.

What we’ve discovered is that people ask different questions and take
different actions than they would ordinarily when they identify
themselves as “artists of life.” In making this integral shift in
perception - from “being acted upon by life” to “becoming actively
involved in the process of living” - we develop a consciousness of
choice which enhances our lives on every level.

The mission of The Art of LIVING Coalition is to support people in
fulfilling their highest potential by becoming more active and aware
participants in their lives. We do so by establishing a context within
which individuals can understand their essential nature as creative and
providing practical tools to create the better lives and world we all
want
for ourselves, our children and our family of the earth. Through our
groundbreaking The Art of LIVING television series and Being Artists of
LIFE TV specials, video and audiotapes, art of living themed
participatory events, education and counselling, TAOLiving programs
provide models of what is working and what is possible...

? Identifying these models where they exist
? Enhancing them where they can be made better
? Creating them where deemed necessary
? and making them accessible for everyone’s benefit

Originally launched by the Getty Center in 1995 in response to interest from local arts, cultural, and educational institutions, the listserv now exists on its own, with some support provided by the Los Angeles County Arts Commission. Appropriate postings include announcements of arts events, job listings in the field, and cultural policy discussions about all topics, including advocacy.

2. HOW DO I SUBSCRIBE/UNSUBSCRIBE TO LA CULTURE NET?
To subscribe, send an e-mail to <laculturenet-subscribe@...>. To unsubscribe, send an e-mail to <laculturenet-unsubscribe@...>. LA Culture Net discussion focuses on everything having to do with the
arts. Feel free to introduce new topics and questions that serve your
interests! Announcements of relevant programs or position openings are
also welcome.

5. WHO SHOULD PARTICIPATE ON LA CULTURE NET?
LA Culture Net is open to anyone interested in the culture of greater Los
Angeles: artists, museum curators, activists, programming staff from
community organizations, librarians, archivists, and teachers in K-12 and
higher education interested in using networks to access
cultural material for curriculum development and classroom instruction.
LACN is an unmoderated list, and members are free to un/subscribe or post
to the list without the moderator's approval. Only members may post to the
list, so there should not be any outside spam posted to this list.

6. HOW MANY MESSAGES WILL I BE GETTING FROM LA CULTURE NET?
As of February 2001, there are about 350 subscribers. Traffic, or mail
volume, varies but usually range from 10 to 15 a week. For your
convenience, all messages sent to the new LACN address will be tagged with
[LACN] in the subject line, so you can easily identify the e-mails sent to
LACN-list. Based on common Netiquette and past problems with large
unsolicited attachment files, all e-mail attachments sent to LACN will be
automatically rejected.

7. WHAT IS THE PREFERRED FORMAT FOR MESSAGES?
First of all, always put your name and email address at the end of every
posting, so that other subscribers can easily identify you. It also helps
to use a meaningful subject heading, so that people can see if your message
deals with a topic that interests them. For job announcements, please
include the phrase <JOB:> in the subject heading. For event announcements,
please include the phrase <EVENT:> In the subject heading.

Examples:
Subject: JOB: Bilingual archivist wanted in Orange County
Subject: EVENT: LACN Web Raising this Saturday!
