back but it slipped my radar.

St. Tammany parish has a Multi Modal Transportation plan, open for public
comment. Comments close TOMORROW 10/25. I'm going to make a few points
about it: It is not multi-modal, they only address cars (NO public
transportation whatsoever). They mention the trace, but nobody is going to
use their bicycle to ride from Slidell to Covington to go shopping, that is
strictly recreational use.

AMost important, they are going to carve up most of the forested and
wetland area between mandeville and slidell, for new "transportation"
modes. Anybody that lives here knows this is not where the congestion is.
So the only reason to add new roads here is to open up all of those areas
for subdivision developoment, simply becasue the land owners and
develoipers can make more money from new subdivisions instead of managed
forests. And WE will pay for these rodas for them.

This will not help traffic congestion one iota. There is a very scarce
mention of environmental, no mention of habit or wetland destruction They
even plan to bring Industrial RAIL back! (no light passenger rail to get
from one place to another, of course). Check out page 88-89 to see the
new green roads in these areas. I'm sure other areas of the praish are
affected as well, i just saw this yesterday and zoomed in on the middle
of the parish. Not to mention they want to put a service road through my
property next to my house.
I know this is late, please take a minute to read at least these few
pages, and send comments to MMTP@.... here are 2 links to the
plan..

Remember, comments are due tomorrow 10/24.

LA Winter Hummingbird Report #2

LABIRD and HUMNET,

We're off to a pretty interesting start to the winter hummingbird season for 2024-25. Several western species have showed up a bit early, including THREE Broad-billed (all immature males). The predictions are for a warm and dry winter along the Gulf Coast as La Nina strengthens, which should make for a good year for Buff-bellied (according to some preliminary analyses I've put together), but that's not materializing yet. I'm super curious to see what happens over the next few weeks.

Please continue to report your winter hummer observations to me for recording in the LA Winter Hummingbird Database, providing the following information:
- Your name
- Your address (town only is acceptable)
- First observed (FO) date (or, if discovered while banding or marking other birds, the date it was observed)
- Species
- Age (Adult, immature, unknown)
- Sex (Male, female, unknown)
- Whether banded, when and by whom
- Send photos if available to confirm above details

Also, please report the last observed (LO) date, if possible, when the bird leaves.

Please also note that Ruby-throats don't count as "wintering" until after Nov 15, so only send reports of the other species for now.

Happy hummingbirding!

COMMENTS DUE 10/25!!! ON St tammany's awful multi-modal transportaiton plan

Thanks in advance - Holly

St. Tammany parish has a Multi Modal Transportation plan, open for public

LOS and the Cameron ferry

For those going to LOS, be advised that the ferry has been down at least
twice for weekends during the last month. On one of our trips we went down
the east side Saturday and birded, and when we started to go west, Melvin
and Robby informed us the ferry was down and would be down until Tuesday.
Two weeks later we were going down to spend the weekend. I checked Friday,
and the ferry was in operation. Saturday, after birding Willow I. and
Broussard Beach, we went to the ferry. The deckhand informed us it was
down, and she didn't know when it would be back up. Sunday morning I
called, and it was still down.

So, a word to the wise. It would be quite inconvenient to get caught on the
wrong side when you're trying to get to the meeting or your lodging. The
DOTD website has information on the ferries, and there is a 24 hour (?)
hotline for information: 1-888-613-3779.

Peveto Woods MacGillivary's Warbler

I have gotten better with the close focus trail cam at the Peveto mister
dish. I realized the side many smaller birds use to approach and put
branches close to the camera. I heard the MacGillivary's Warbler had
returned and was hopeful I had luck on the trail cam. I replaced the memory
stick in the camera yesterday during the work day, and had good luck. The
link below is a short assemblage of 4 visits to the mister water feature on
October 14 and 15.
The visit times were: 9:29AM, 1:30PM,4:23PM, and 11:16AM.

Dear David,

The 2024 eBird Taxonomy Update
<>
will be happening on 22 October! Watch the eBird homepage
<>
and Slack for updates on our progress; a full list of changes will appear
when the new taxonomy goes live.
*VERY IMPORTANT* Submit all Not Submitted eBird Mobile Checklists by 21
October.

We can only apply the new taxonomy to submitted checklists. Mobile
checklists with an outdated taxonomy may cause issues if submitted
later¡ªplease spread the word!

*Clear Out Old eBird Mobile Packs*

Delete old or unused packs eBird Mobile Packs
<>
to
free up valuable storage space on your phone and ensure an up-to-date
taxonomy when you download those packs again. Win-win! You¡¯ll get a notice
on your phone when new packs are ready. If you use outdated packs, you
might see minor inconsistencies for the changed taxa. Feel free to keep the
packs you plan to use on 22 October, and update afterward.
*Filter Edits Temporarily Disabled ?*

Filter editing and running have been disabled while we update and add new
taxa. This functionality will be restored when the taxonomy update begins
at approximately 9 AM Eastern on October 22. Please check your filters
after the update to ensure everything is functioning correctly.
*Updates Already Underway ?*

Like last year, we're making significant changes to observations in advance
of the taxonomy update. Changes being made include: 1) adding taxa to
filters that will be split; 2) converting records to the subspecies that
will later become a split species.

We've already started converting many Herring Gull records worldwide to the
correct subspecies (soon-to-be species!), and we'll be doing this for other
taxa as well. If you notice records changing, don¡¯t be alarmed. However, if
you see records flagging that should not be, please reach out to us so we
can address any issues.
The former Red-rumped Swallow (*Cecropis daurica*) is now split into *European
Red-rumped Swallow* (*C. rufula*, top left ? Henrik Brings?e ML204522551
<>)
*African Red-rumped Swallow* (*C. melanocrissus, *top right; ? David Bishop

and *Eastern Red-rumped Swallow* (*C. daurica*, bottom left, ? Rajat

while what was Striated Swallow (*C. striolata*) is getting lumped into the
new *Eastern Red-rumped Swallow* (bottom right ? Parthasarathi Chakrabarti

*Remain Vigilant ??¡â?*

Taxonomy updates can take over a week to trickle through the system; eBird
Mobile pack updates may not be fully complete until mid-November or early
December. We will post an announcement on the eBird front page and Slack
when the process is fully complete. At that time, please check your filters
and regional data for errors.

Some things may look like errors mid-way through the process. Please wait
until Friday, Oct 25 to see if issues work themselves out, then contact
Marshall by Slack or email if you notice anything amiss.

Re: CBC date request

One more point on this. Thanks to Glenn Ousset for bringing up the Trip Report function on eBird and its usefulness in getting results to participants. This is better than nothing, but does not produce that Species by Area table that is so informative, at least for me.

As a model to aim for, I¡¯m attaching one by Robb Dobbs from last year¡¯s White Lake CBC.

Those compilations (species and individuals for each area) were much appreciated by the participants so that they could see that the results of their individual and combined efforts; they also provided incentives for participants to work their hardest. Nowadays, counts are compiled mostly by putting them into a spreadsheet, so it really doesn¡¯t take much additional work to at least offer that to the participants, and that can be done as soon as the CBC is submitted, thus as soon after the count as possible.

Peveto Woods, Tuesday work day

Tuesday, Oct 15th
9:30 - Noon
David Booth and I have scheduled a day for trail maintenance, trimming
vines, cutting back vegetation, and cleaning benches and water features. I
plan to get there around 9:30 and work until around noon. The mosquitoes
and deer flies have been tolerable lately, but long sleeves and pants are
recommended. I always bring a head net and have extras if the deer flies
are a nuisance. I will be checking trail cams and changing out memory
sticks if you wish to see the set up. Footwear that can handle briars and
good gloves are also recommended. Loppers, trimmers, and hand clippers are
good to bring. I will have bottled water, but bring prefered food and
fluids.
The birding has been good lately in the sanctuary and the weather should be
nice. Call or text if you have questions.
Thanks,
Dave Patton

Western Kingbird at Grand Isle state park

LA birders

Lisa Robichaux and I observed a Western Kingbird along with
two Eastern kingbirds on the wires along the main road near
the campground bath house this afternoon.
Also had a nice flight of 20 Broad-winged Hawks
flying in nearly single file from west to east.

Re: Cormorants at Chicot SP

David ¡ª

That¡¯s a lot of DCCOs. When/where the fishing¡¯s good (schools of shad I¡¯m guessing) big groups of DCCOs and White Pelicans are pretty commonly observed in south LA in fall/winter. Re: actual numbers, I¡¯m guessing most often 75-150. During migration the same happens along points to the north. They really go for big open water bodies where they herd big schools of fish. They often hunt like that around the deep sides of spillways. Y¡¯all may want to check out the spillway at Chicot SP¡¯s North Landing if y¡¯all are still there.

Later this afternoon, we saw what I assume is the same group flying north, low to the lake, from our cabin.

I¡¯ve never seen this many DCCOs together before. Is this related to fall migration ? I have pictures which I will add to my eBird list when I get home Friday. Comments welcomed.

an hour today, but did not see it. Photos attached are stills from the
