That¡¯s a lot of DCCOs. When/where the fishing¡¯s good (schools of shad I¡¯m guessing) big groups of DCCOs and White Pelicans are pretty commonly observed in south LA in fall/winter. Re: actual numbers, I¡¯m guessing most often 75-150. During migration the same happens along points to the north. They really go for big open water bodies where they herd big schools of fish. They often hunt like that around the deep sides of spillways. Y¡¯all may want to check out the spillway at Chicot SP¡¯s North Landing if y¡¯all are still there.

?My wife and I were birding this morning(Tuesday, 10/8/24) at the south fishing pier in Chicot State Park and saw a large number of DCCOs feeding. My conservative estimate was approximately 200 birds. (eBird flagged this number). Most were juveniles. Later this afternoon, we saw what I assume is the same group flying north, low to the lake, from our cabin.
I¡¯ve never seen this many DCCOs together before. Is this related to fall migration ? I have pictures which I will add to my eBird list when I get home Friday. Comments welcomed.
