Morgan systems M303 coaxial surge suppressors used with the LA1k amp 6
I am buying a LA1K used amp this coming week and for lightning protection outside the house I have tow coaxial lines that each have a Morgan System M303 arrestor in line before the coax comes into the room. Bot ate mounted to a copper plate and also grounded with "6 wire to 8 ft ground rods. I was wondering if anyone had any experience using these arrestors where a SS amp might have issue passing a signal threw them cause the have a choke system inside that bleeds some of the static to ground and therefore just maybe that would create an issue with SS finals. I live in Florida and these arrestors have been working fine with an Acom 1000 for three years, I used the Alpha Delta ones before but they seemed to have issues with the weather down here with varying SWR at times but once I installed the Morgan systems jobs no issues. They are very similar to the Array Solution jobs and the original design was taken from the I.C.E company that is no longer. Any input would be great, TNX. Jim KX2T

FTDX5000 with LA1K 29
Hello Friends, Am wondering if any of you are using the FTDX5000 with the LA-1K? Reason why im asking is i am getting frequent BYPASS amp cut outs on FT8/SSB/CW with minimum drive and dont know why. I have the QSK time in the radio set to 30ms. I do not use full break in and my semi for CW is set to 500 (quite long so no hot switching) and i never use VOX for SSB. Amp always goes into BYPASS at the START of the TX. Sometimes even at the end not so much. This tells me its got something to do with possibility of overshoot, however, at 10w drive, how? I also notice at the start of the TX, the AMP shows a slightly higher hang at the start of the TX then drops to proper power for the rest of the TX on FT8. This could be an indicator of the FTDX either overshooting or putting out a slightly more power right at the start and fooling the amp into it looking like something is wrong. Note that it is not SWR BYPASS, but just a flashing BYPASS randomly. Its kinda getting on my nerves for DXing right when it BYPASSes i send my report which the DX doesnt hear and just 10 watts goes out to the DX. Frustrating. Thanks. Barry VE6UM

18MHz drain Voltage supply Bypass problem 11
I started using my 2022 LA-1K this week in earnest. I was checking the power on each band as well as some CQs on CW or answering some SSB CQs. Testing bands 40m to 10m I found a problem on 17m (18MHz) Running the IC-7300 with just 30-50W into the amp, I saw 900 to 1050W on all bands except 17m. There it goes into bypass, even dropping power to 15W in 300W out I get the +Vd bypass. Going down to 10W in 200W lets it keep working.. I made a 4 min video and a couple of pictures in case Palstar needs to see this. Is there an internal adjustment I can do or some testing I can do inside to avoid the shipping to and from Palstar? The book only has this text below *Bypass+VD: [as seen on display] Amp is in BYPASS to protect from loss of +50V, drain voltage supply. The indication should clear in a few seconds. This occurs when operating on 120V, if Drain Current (Id) exceeds 32 Amps . Solution: Switch supply voltage to 240V, or If operating on 120V, Reduce Drive Power* Any help, appreciated! BTW I'm using the HF-Auto tuner as well. The antenna is at 1.8:1 and the tuner gets to 1.05:1 easy. 73 Raul W4AWI

PTT not working 11
I just set up the radio desk with a 2022 LA-1K and HF-Auto both purchased used, pristine. This was 2 months ago. I connected to the IC-7300 via the 13pin plug and the PTT RCA connector on the amp. It wont key up to TX mode, I tried the IC-7300 on RTTY with 30-50W. The meter sees the power so does the tuner. I then shorted the PTT connector on the amp to ground hoping to hear the click to TX, nothing. I tried both modes selectable on the screen, nothing. I tried with the gray button (on the front) both in and out, nothing helped. BTW, I cant find any mention of that button anywhere. Whats it for? I wrote a message to Palstar but I figure it will take a week for a reply. Looks like a fantastic amplifier and I cant wait to start using it. The HF Auto is working fine. Anyone out there know whats going on? I hope its my mistake not a defect. The user manual sure needs to be a lot better. 73 W4AWI

Amp PTT TX key PTT dead? 5
I just set up my radio desk with an IC-7300, LA-1K and HF-Auto, both made in 2022. After spending a while to se why the IC-7300 doesnt put the amp in TX mode, I shorted the RCA PTT connector on the amp. It still doesn't key into TX. I tried changing PTT modes and nothing changes. Any help is appreciated W4AWI

New LA1K owner 9
Dear Friends, I'm about to purchase an LA1K and HF Auto. I live in an apartment above a garage and would like to get a 240 v line installed. The electrician called today and gave me an estimate of $700.00 to put a plug on my wall. I think that excessive. And so my question is what kind of output would I expect if I saved the $700.00 and plugged it into my existing 110 outlet? I know that it will be less than the advertised output but how much less? Thank you so much for your anticipated responses. Bob

LA-1K use with lightning suppressor 10
So I recently received my LA-1K and put it in sequence with my Yaesu, FT 991a, to the amp, to Palstar AT2K tuner, to a lightning suppressor outside the shack via lmr 240 coax, to a balun via coax and to a random length inverted the dipole. The amp blew the output transistor first time I keyed the PTT. Mark stated it was the lightning arrestor and when I explained I was in Florida the lightning capital of North America and required some sort of protection, he suggested an alpha Delpha type switch at the radio. Well, it has always been my opinion that you need to keep the fox out of the henhouse. The lightning arrester/protection needs to be on the wall of the shack, outside, not inside at the radio, where the amplifier and the tuner are susceptible to the hit prior to reaching the switch as protection. So this made no sense to me. I would appreciate any input regarding Re attempting LA-1K use going forward. Thanks Brett KN4DVM Sent from the all new AOL app for iOS

Antenna selection 25
When I am on 60m and have antenna 1 selected I am transmitting on antenna 2, if I select antenna 2 it works properly. Has anyone experienced this? This is only happening on 60m.

FCC ID: 2ANZ2-LA-1K 5
Hello All, The FCC ID on the back of my LA-1K reads 2ANZ2-LA-1K. Did a FCC ID search for 2ANZ2-LA-1K on FCC.gov and was able to find the LA-1K EMC test report (Report No.: 100620-8) as submitted to the FCC for consideration. This link https://apps.fcc.gov/oetcf/eas/reports/ViewExhibitReport.cfm?mode=Exhibits&RequestTimeout=500&calledFromFrame=N&application_id=yWPPwZ3u%2FYaWKEqy4pVn4w%3D%3D&fcc_id=2ANZ2-LA-1K will take you to the FCC.gov page, where you can view a copy of said report. EMC Test Report Observation: Test Data Summary and Plots pertaining to "Occupied Bandwidth / Authorized Frequency Bands" in said test report covered only 6M, 10M, 12M, 15M, 17M, 20M, 40M, 80M and 160M. Next, I clicked on Users Manual 2 (on the same page where I pulled up the EMC test report) to access the initial-released copy of the LA-1K Technical Manual as submitted to the FCC for consideration. LA-1K Technical Manual (initial release) Observations: 1. The LA-1K front panel view (see Page 7 and Front Cover of the Technical Manual) clearly identifies 40M/30M as being available on the original LA-1K touch-screen display. 2. It states near the top of Page 5 of the Technical Manual, in part, "BAND SELECT To switch bands, 160M-80M-40-30M-20-15M-12-10M-6M, press the "BAND" button on the touchscreen display, then select desired band. The LA-1K selects the proper band automatically when transmit is activated. Questions: 1. Why would the LA-1K EMC test report, as submitted to the FCC, not include test results of the then available 30M band?? 2. Why would the current version of the LA-1K not include the 30M band as one of the band selections available on its touch-screen display?? 73, Ray KJ5MI

Icom 7100 band data cable help
I understand that the DB7i is the band data cable to use with the IC-7100 and that the Icom OPC599 Y cable is also needed (in order to adapt the 13 pin connector on the rig with the 7 pin one on the cable.) Additionally, are there any menu changes needed on the radio to enable communication between the rig and the LA1K? Ron WA2EIO

amp to rig data cable (For Icom; the # DB7DI ) 4
I have been reading the recent postings and suggestions to use a data cable to operate the amp more 'safely' by using the communication/data cable between the radio (IC-7100) and the amp. Anyone know about how long the cable is? Ron WA2EIO

ICOM 7610 Interface Cable 2
The 9pin connector interface to an Icom 7610. Do I need this radio control cable interface cable? I'm already using the SEND /ALC from the 7610. And where does it connect to on the 7610 rear if needed? An does it eliminate the Send/ ALC OR use both.? Confused. TIA... de K2HVE

LA-1K Specification: "Auto-Protect: SWR/Short Circuit/Over Temp" 4
In his comment here /g/la1k/message/1258 on my post /g/la1k/message/1257 yesterday, with respect to the "Auto-Protect: SWR/Short Circuit/Over Temp" feature of the LA-1K, listed as part of its specifications on http://www.palstar.com/en/la1k/ as of this writing, Paul NO0T writing, in part, "I didn’t notice I was getting too far from resonance and *SWR went to 2:1, it went to bypass to protect the finals. Just as designed* - woohoo! Gotta love it - dummy proof." Paul's excellent observations, as stated above, demonstrating yet another case of *inferior design implementation* found on the LA-1K amplifier, since *an SWR as high as 2:1 is acceptable!* SWR reference material for all to consider: https://www.arrl.org/files/file/Technology/tis/info/pdf/q1106037.pdf 73, Ray KJ5MI

POWER SWITCH FAILURE 13
To be accurate, the power switch itself has not failed; it's the light inside the power switch which has failed. The amp itself is still operating after the light goes out. 73, Kent K9ZTV > Btw while I was on the HHH Net this morning, the replacement power switch of my LA-1K (S/N 38935) has failed after just nine (9) weeks of installation. I have already emailed Mark Ward (Palstar technician) this video clip https://youtu.be/RaYrS25fEeQ showing the same failure experienced by the original power switch that Mr. Ward deemed defective on February 20, 2023. > > 73, > Ray > KJ5MI >

120/240V switch? 56
Hi I am about to switch over to using 240V instead of 120V, however Palstar support advised that I ensure I toggle some switch on the amp to set it to 240v. I can’t for the life of me find this switch or any mention of needing to do that in the manual - anyone able to help? Thanks -Craig Wi0R

LA1K Passive? 22
Thanks for the ad. I have the radio a 7610 going to the Palstar LA1K . I would think with the amp off (no power} that it would be passive and the radio could Transmit and receive with it off?. This is not the case. I need to have the amp ON in standby or operate to transmit or receive on the 7610? Am i missing something? I used t have the Auto tuner and amp inline and there was no problem.
