LA-1K and QSK-2500 and FT1000MP 8
Dear helpers: Things have been too hectic here fully to respond to your assistance. Clearly, to save LA-1K's relay when operating CW with the amplifier, one needs to use the QSK-2500. I have read the associated manuals, reviews, and have drawn a preliminary diagram of what needs to be connected to what. Questions remain. I will find the time to articulate the questions in a manner calculated to ease the provision of answers. Questions and answers may help others too. 73, James N8TT

What could cause transmission interference in audio devices? 3
I did another funky antenna project, used simple 14 gauge wire I've made a 20m dipole with a 1:1 800W common mode choke. I hung the dipole vertically and run the coax near 90 degree horizontally from the feed point. Due to the tree height there is a little J hook at the bottom to avoid having that end drag on the ground. The worst SWR I'm getting is 3.0 (measured on the coax end to the HF-Auto using an antenna analyzer) so it shouldn't be to bad for the HF-Auto to tune. I also use LMR-400 to keep losses low due to the SWR. The antenna did great, even got some DX across the Atlantic and into Brazil using SSB at about 400W. However, my neighbor and my daughter can hear me transmitting with that high power though in their audio system. Not sure about my neighbors setup but my daughter is using her head phones on the laptop and can hear me talking although it's impossible to understand what I say. Interesting tidbit is that she doesn't get the interference when her laptop is disconnected from the mains power (i.e. running on battery). She only can hear the interference when running higher power. At 100W it seems to be either not there or to weak to notice. I'm running the LA-1K on 120V. Adding three FT240-43 ferrite toroids with 4 wraps on the power cable of the LA-1K didn't make a difference. Neither did using 240V with the LA-1K. I don't think it's the LA-1K that causing the interference but I would like to know what could cause that. While this specific antenna is very temporary, I'm hoping to setup a similar antenna because I really enjoyed it's performance. Claus (AE0S) BTW, I'm also using a horizontal 40m non-optimal dipole feed with ladder line that doesn't cause any interference at high power.

New LA-1K Only band switches via RF at initial power up 3
Brand new LA-1K. RF band switching works ONLY after going from 'off' to 'on'. After that it doesn't band switch. I bought it for this feature. I don't have a data cable (Kenwood 590SG) and don't want one. LA-1K on 240v. Paired with an also new HF-AUTO tuner. LA-1K Firmware version 1.08M. Display version 4 ANY idea what might cause this? Looks like a firmware issue to me as it seems flawless on the first TX after power up. (changes band and displays proper freq). After that.... nothing changes. Meter shows barefoot power going through amp in STBY so it is getting/seeing RF.

LA-1K FIRMWARE UPDATES 2
Website updates have always lagged behind shipping updates. Mark and others are good about experimenting with firmware tweaks from time to time in order to address problems encountered by individual users. It could be they are wary of posting such trial updates until they are confident the tweaks are stable. Perhaps Palstar has taken a page from Elecraft and uses new purchasers as beta-testers. 73, Kent K9ZTV On Sep 30, 2021, at 7:14 PM, Scott Sherer <ssherer@...> wrote: ? Band Switching Cause LA-1K to Go To Standby Mode 12
Firmware version: 1.08C Using control cable from Flex 6600 Mode Option: Direct Keying Power-Up Mode: OPERATE When I switch bands on the Flex, the amp switches bands commensurately, but goes into Standby Mode. This is not an issue if I'm sitting at the operating position, but when I am operating remotely, I have no way to change mode to OPR. The last thread relating to this in this group was 2019. I am wondering whether others have solved this problem. Everything else about the station works fine for remote operating, so the LA-1K is the last problem to chase down. Thanks for any insights. 73, Ben - AE4NT

Details of augmentations to effect CW? 4
Dear Group: LA1K has been working in manner expected for SSB and for short digital messages. Power has been kept to no higher than 1 kW - mostly around 900 watts. Would like to consider adding outside of the amplifier what is needed to effect CW - even with the possibility of "full-break-in." I attempted to have my FT1000MP lengthen its delay enough to save the LA1K's relays, but did not fine the effective secret instruction. Recall that at least one member of group had connected external-to-the-amplifier parts so that one might operate CW without exhausting the LA1K's relay. A block diagram of connections needed and explicit descriptions of the parts needed is desired. It sure would be nice to be able to use the ultimate digital mode without hurting the amplifier. Thanks, Mac N8TT

Rig Cable 20
Just installed a cable from my Flex to the LA1K. Seems to work great but every time I switch bands it puts the amp in standby. Any way to get around this. Seems odd it would do this when amp stays in operating mode when you are tuning it with RF and no cable. Rich

MARS? 6
I have an LA-1K and a Icom IC-7610 that I would like to get working together on the MARS frequencies. What do I need to do in order to accomplish this? The LA-1K has firmware version 1.07B installed. Thanks, Rudy, W5HRH

MARS use of LA-1K 17
Using 240 VAC; FT1000MP with band cable from transceiver to LA1K; and BY1500A tuner for good doublet. It was indicated that the firmware was for amateur and for MARS (delivered from the factory). Band decode seems to split at 2.5 MHz to 4 MHz; 4 MHz to 7.5 MHz; 7.5 MHz to 21.5 MHz. Tried - let us say - 3.25 MHz: On CW no issue with delivering 1 Kw. LA1K indicates the actual frequency and indicates 80 meters. Go to USB and on speaking the amplifier indicates 160 meters and "freq bypass," and stops delivering power. What is going on? Do not think that the 8 pins of the band-data cable contain/provide information about the mode (CW or USP). Ameritron DB-8DY Rig Interface Cable SN112962Ideas? Mac N8TT

Keying a LA-1k with a Yaesu 991A 2
I've been successfully using my LA-1K for a couple days manually keying it with a switch, but that gets a little old/quick, especially when doing digital modes on EME/MSK. From the users manual/diagrams showing it driving a Yaesu amp, I ass-u-med the FT991 would be able to directly key the LA-1k as well. I hooked up a known good keying cable to the LIN/TUN jack that I'd borrowed to test it while waiting for mine I ordered to arrive. Unfortunately, immediately upon power on of the 991, it enabled transmit on the amp, prior to keying the transmit function on the radio. Upon troubleshooting, I discovered the LIN/TUN keying circuit on pins 2&3 have continuity 100% of the time, regardless of the menu 143 settings/values. It's definitely NOT functioning as expected/intended. I did speak with the person I borrowed the cable from and he assured me his 991(s) supply a ground return only upon activation of transmit on that cable, regardless of the tuning menu selection (internal/external/etc). He typically uses this very cable to drive his VHF amp or a transverter, so I know the cable is not shorted. What am I missing? Is their high current draw and/or any special keying requirements on the LA-1k that I’m not seeing here? Thanks in advance, 73 Tim W5TRL -- ————————————- 73 Tim W5TRL Phone/text 512-799-0308

FT1000MP and LA-1K More 10
Thanks Kent, Bill, Danny and others. Palstar also experienced the disconnecting after a few words of SSB and change to 160 meters. Present expectation is a glitch in firm ware, which is being worked on by Palstar. Used the LA-1K on a net this morning when propagation was poor. Made a positive difference. Used band cable and version 1.08C. Interested in details from group who have been successful using LA-1K on CW. Actual layout used? Also, because one little 20 watt rig (G90) seems not to know about the existence of using a single paddle to send CW ( push one way get dots, push the other way get a sequence of dashes, no pushing paddles together) - who makes a simple, small, single-paddle keyer? Keyers that I have seen are too fancy or are just not capable of using single paddle key. Recall making keyer using RTL logic DIP devices long, long ago. 73 James N8TT

White Screen 3
My LA-1K has been performing almost flawlessly, but now when I turn it on the amp's screen is completely white. It has done this two times in the past, but has always come back. Any suggestions? Thanks, Rudy, W5HRH

ALC cable 12
Do I really need it? Just got the LA-1K, not sure if I need it or not. I am also at lost about TX delay thing in the manual. Currently I have just keying cable connected to the amp. I will be using either Yaesu FT-991A or Icom IC-7000 but most likely it will be 991A. I don't even know where to look for the TX delay. I only place I can see in the 991A manual was in menu setting for CW. 73

Posting for a friend - I cannot figure it out 10
Brand new LA1K. Current firmware. To keep it simple, we will go with the dummy load first. I will copy/paste his reports to me. If ANYONE has a clue, please let me know. He bought the LA1K at my suggestion, and things are not going well. . I did try the ANT switching to 2 to 3 and back to 1. And I did remove the band cable In STBY mode it senses the correct frequency and changes band accordingly. I am set to 20 meters CW to a dummy load. 10 watts. When I switch to OPR the amp shows the correct frequency 14040 but switches to 160 meters and then goes into bypass. I have no idea what is going on ... Then I switch to STBY and hit the key and the amp goes to 20 meters like it should. I can repeat the cycle. I am not using ALC as that has no effect on CW. . I did put a meter on my outlet and it shows 250V across the top two and 125V between either top and common. . Also swapped out the coax to the dummy load, no change in behavior. I note that in STBY the frequency is correct and stable, while in OPR the frequency is correct but flashing. On to the antennas (which work fine with an Alpha amp) I did try it with a real antenna. Seems to work fine on the big 8040 vertical ( has a line isolator but no arrestor ). When I switched to the LPDA ( with arrestor ) it worked on 12 meters briefly, then went into BYPASS SWR. First time I have actually seen the BYPASS SWR on the display. Previously it was just showing BYPASS but not the BYPASS SWR. And now ( when operating properly ) the frequency is not flashing, so maybe frequency flashing is a clue. Now I know and understand even less than I did before. Was on 40 meter CW, answered a CQ from F4DIA on 7008. Was running 800 watts to the 8040 vertical, SWR 1.3 Halfway through the QSO the amp kicks out, showing high SWR. Had to finish the QSO barefoot. Went back to dummy load. 900 watts CW 80 meters. SWR 1.0 Amp works, then goes into BYPASS with no BYPASS XXX but I don't have to reset it, just key again and it okay. Disconnected band cable ( again ) and no difference in behavior. It just keeps going into bypass ( flashing yellow BYPASS ) no BYPASS XXX just flashing BYPASS and flashing frequency when I key. ANYONE????????????????

LA-1K 2
Just purchased LA-1K and had trouble getting it going. After a few talks with Mark, it turns out my problems were with the transceiver. It now works flawlessly. I wish to thank Mark for his patience and expertise in communicating with me. 73, Marv, W2AOC
