Details of augmentations to effect CW?

Dear Group:? ?LA1K has been working in manner expected for SSB and for short digital messages.? Power has been kept to no higher than 1 kW - mostly around 900 watts.

Would like to consider adding outside of the amplifier what is needed to effect CW - even with the possibility of "full-break-in."

I attempted to have my FT1000MP lengthen its delay enough to save the LA1K's relays, but did not fine the effective secret instruction.? Recall that at least one member of group had connected external-to-the-amplifier parts so that one might operate CW without exhausting the LA1K's relay.

A block diagram of connections needed and explicit descriptions of the parts needed is desired.? It sure would be nice to be able to use the ultimate digital mode without hurting the amplifier.

Thanks,? ? ?Mac? ? N8TT?

Hi Mac,
The LA1K will make a good cw amp, but there are a few considerations. I do not recommend running the amp in Normal mode for cw, even running semi-break in. The reason is that the amp T/R relay will "always" hot switch at the beginning of each transmission and will shorten the first dit or dah of each transmission.

If you would like to operate QSK, then the amp must be operated in Direct mode where the transceiver controls band selection and amp keying. As a shameless plug, my QSK-2500 allows QSK operation of the LA1K. See my website:

If you have an older transceiver without amp control, then this little switch will allow you to operate the LA1K in Direct mode for QSK operation.

Mac . . .

An equally shameless "ditto" from one who has run full-QSK using Bill Rodgers' QSK-2500 electronic T/R switch for several years, first with a Yaesu Quadra, and lately with the LA-1K.?

Over the last four-days the amp was used for hours at-a-time during the W?M Missouri Bicentennial Special Event in full-QSK at 950 watts with zero hiccups and no over-heating.?

Everything Bill recommends about keying the LA-1K is absolutely correct.? The QSK-2500 is extremely quiet and Bill's support is superb.? Once the QSK-2500 is turned on, I completely forget it's there.? It is used nightly on the National Traffic System nets where full break-in is mandatory.

In addition, I would underscore Palstar's recommendation that the LA-1K be powered from 240 volts and that a licensed electrician do the installation (for insurance reasons, if nothing else).

Dear Kent K9ZTV:? ?Do not see my message requesting help, but you sure have provided confirmation of a solution to using LA-1K on CW without exhausting the amplifier's relay.? ?

I will use Google to find Bill Rodger's QSK-2500 with expectation that he has not only the hardware but also connection schematic.? If I find a link and information, I will report back.? Have an 80 meter dipole at 39 meters that I would like to use at last to work DXCC on 80.

Thanks for your response.? ?73? ? N8TT? (optimized CW call sign and what sons call me)? ? ?Mac
