Re: HI SWR at RF Input

Steve,?

Yes it is. I have a ftdx5000 and there is a setting in the radio (which many modern radios have) max output 200w, and i set it down to 50w as i feel thats a good safety measure for extra protection.?

I was in the cw contest this past weekend. Single band 15m. On this band i noticed i dont need much drive to get 900w out. 35w over drives it and kicks it out for me only on 15m. I feel better knowing its only 50 max that will kick it out instead of the full 200 if i ever tx everywhere else.

Interesting note. At the start of the contest, ?I was having a few end of tx bypasses amp kicking out and was getting annoying.?
I checked the back connectors and one was not very tight. In the summer, i disconnect that connector for lighting and i guess the last time i did it didnt go tight enough. After that, issue resolved.

I have put many contest hours into this amp in the past couple years. Its been a work horse for me and a solid performer. Excellent amp.?

The only input issues I have heard of happening with the LA1K resulted from overdriving the Amp with a 200 watt radio like the 101mp. I would contact Palstar on Monday morning and get their opinion.

I used a small jewelers screwdriver.? No soldering necessary with the kit.

It was a little bit of a pain ensuring the wires remained in the slots whilst screwing them down, and that's because they are just so darn small.?

Let me know how it goes for you.? One thing that comes to mind, don't trust me and don't trust the ebay sellers pin outs.. Quickly check them to ensure they are right. They should be but double check.

Re: Band Data Cable FTDX10 to LA-1K

As I recall... no change necessary. However, this is my procedure for using them together on SSB:
  1. Make sure the LA-1K is in Direct Keying mode (settings) and on standby.
  2. Have the correct antenna selected on the HF-Auto.
  3. Make sure the internal FTDX10 tuner is?OFF.
  4. Put Mode on the FTDX10 to AM or FM?(adjust RF output to 5 to 10 watts max).
  5. Key the FTDX10 with a brief press of the mike button and let the HF-Auto tune the antenna at the frequency you desire.?
  6. You often need to press the mike button a 2nd time to get the HF-Auto to display the correct SWR match.
  7. Once you have a match on the HF-Auto, adjust FTDX10 RF output power to no more than 40 watts.
  8. Switch the FTDX10 to SSB.
  9. Switch the LA-1K to?operate and begin transmitting.
There are other ways to do this... but this is what has worked for me.

Joe,

I had no clue about adjusting the HF Auto.? I have read the manual, but I think I need to read it several times to obtain a better understanding.

Yes, I too miss the Heathkit days.? I am presently looking for a good deal on an excellent condition Heathkit 220 amplifier.? They still have an awesome reputation even after many years.? With a few mods they seem to do well.

In the 70's, I felt the Heathkit Battery Eliminator IP 2715 was one of the best power supplies around and I enjoyed assembling and using them.? Now I have the Antron -70 AP-M and it is kind of hard to beat.

Many people do not realize how easy it is to convert computer ATX power supplies into 12 volt/5 volt bench power supplies.? It only requires a tiny circuit board.? I have converted so many that I lost track of how many.? An 850 watt ATX computer power supply can give 70 amps output and I have used them to power RV's, radios, etc.? They work extremely well and their longevity even at massive amp output is amazing...

To key the amp you need to activate the PTT (push to talk). The FTDX10 doesn't have a PTT RCA jack, so you must use a specific cable,?refer to page 11 in the FTDX10 manual. I ran into the same issue of figuring out a way to key my amp. Unfortunately, the correct cable (DB-10MY)?was not available at the time that I needed it (It still may not be). I had to make my own cable. Refer to these links to get an idea of what you may need to do if you can't locate the?correct cable. The cable referenced above (dxe-acomss-ysu10) may not work as it states the cable is for Acom amps only. But, if it really does work then you're good to go. I'm just not familiar with that cable.

Re: Brand new Palstar LA-1K and brand new Palstar HF Auto, can't get them to work...

Dirk,
I also built many Heathkit projects as well. I enjoyed the whole process and miss those days of beginning a new kit and taking it to a functioning finished product. Did I fully understand what I was doing? Not really. But it was satisfying to see it all come together. Today's surface-mounted component technology has mostly eliminated hand assembly and soldering on circuit boards. The LA-1K is a great amplifier and pairs well with the FTDX10. I also have the HF-Auto and it's a sweet antenna tuner. Another note is you'll need to adjust the settings on the amp once the cable is connected. See page 21 – Direct Mode Keying in the LA-1K manual.?
Good luck!

Hello. There are DB (and others) connectors that have screws instead of soldering pins, they are easy to work with many little wires and they are also good for experimenting with custom?made cables.

Joe,

Thank you for your help, especially the clarity on the finer points.

Years ago [1970's] I built a myriad of Heathkit items.? My favorite item to build back then was the Heathkit Battery Eliminator IP 2715.? One of the most challenging of the kits was the Heathkit remote control kits.? Heathkit sold the transmitter, receiver and servos kits for remote control airplanes back then.? Building and soldering the servos, receivers, etc. were a bit of a challenge because nearly all the components had to be mounted and soldered in a vertical rather than a horizontal orientation.? But I got it done and they worked well for years of fun.

I grew up in Silicon Valley.? Back in the 60's and 70's many companies in SV had assembly lines where people sat at work benches and installed components on printed circuit boards and then soldered them for 8 hours a day.? It was a great way to learn to solder!? Some companies paid not by the hour, but by how many successful circuit boards you soldered.? This led to people learning to solder very quickly and very successfully.

Years later I was totally blown away when for the first time in my life I saw an assembly line fully automated where numerically controlled machines shot hundreds of electrical components into the circuit boards in a matter of seconds.? My how we have come a long, long way!? Want to know know what I enjoyed the most?? When a machine malfunctioned [and it happened often] thousands upon thousands of resisters, diodes, transistors, capacitors, flew all over the floor.? The management's attitude was it wasn't even worth the time/effort to re-sort them, so they threw them away.? I was able to collect thousands of items because they simply did not want them.??

I have ordered both the din cable and the DB9 for my Yaesu/Palstar combo and am excited to learn much more about amplifiers, auto tuners and radios.? I am especially interested in learning more about how they interact with each other.

I appreciate you and the patience you have shown me.

Have great day!

Dirk

If you're neat with your wiring and use a small cable tie to secure it, the covers should go on and tighten up. At least mine did.

I had the same issue with my IC-7300. The LA-1K would frequently kick out due to overdrive unless I ran the drive super low. Tried 3 different 7300s, same problem with all.? I understand the 7610 does it too.? Poor ALC design on Icom's part.? ?I finally gave up, sold the 7300 and bought a FT-710.? No more problem.

Bob? WB8CAC

Different strokes for different folks the saying goes.? I have one of the first 7300's sold in the US.? Bought it from R&L?March, 2016 soon to be 7 years old.? I am the second owner of my LA-1K.? I am a contester, SSB and CW.? Thousands of contacts in 4 years and the only time it goes off line is overdrive (forget to reduce drive power) or high SWR.? Drive power is usually 35 to 40 Watts depending on the band.? I do not have an ALC connection between the radio and the amp.? TX delay is set to 15ms.

I previously had an Acom 1000 and didn't have any issues with it either.
