Locked Sticky ADMIN: >>HOW TO ASK YOUR QUESTION<< - A general reminder for everyone #admin
====================== HOW to ask your question ====================== One of the most common questions about JMRI is "How do I get it to work?". This isn't really a problem with JMRI itself in most cases, but there are HUGE numbers of possible configurations for DCC systems, and Windows, Linux, and Mac computers out there. Just asking "How do I get it to work" is NOT going to get you any useful help. When asking ANY question, you should >>>utilize a meaningful subject line<<< that indicates the problem and include the following information in the body of the message: + If JMRI has started copy and paste the System Console into the body. (its under help on the start screen) + Has JMRI worked before on this computer? + JMRI version + Previous version if you just upgraded + Java version + Previous version if you just upgraded + Computer make and model + if you have just upgraded, from which version + Any other DCC devices in use + Specific details of your difficulty including error messages if any, or what you would like to do with JMRI. Decoder Programming, Signals, Automation, etc. Depending on the nature of the problem, you may need to supply even more information, but this is the absolute required for anyone to give you accurate answers. Signing you post helps keep the group friendly and personable! Your moderators and trouble shooters.

Difference Between Compare and Reset 28 #decoderpro
All, Recently developed a problem with one of my older diesels, an N scale Bachmann with Econami factory installled. Def used is ECO-100 Diesel. Sound was fine, loco would not move. On the programming track, I loaded the loco's DecoderPro roster entry file and used the CVs tab to compare all values. No differences. Loco still not moving. Did a Reset. Loco now moves. Rewrote all CVs from the loco's roster entry file. Loco now will again not move. To emphasize, these settings have worked fine for years. Are there some settings somewhere that DecoderPro can not see or change, except by reset? Regards

Dispatcher continuous transit fails after a few loops 2
Sometimes it's only one or two loops. This time the train went maybe 5-6 then stopped presumedly because of the double mast stop (I don't see that specific aspect at https://www.jmri.org/xml/signals/basic/aspects.xml). It's not always the same mast sometimes it's the other double mast. Why can't it allocate sections when nothing else is on the track? Notes: I'm using 5.11 and all turnouts are ghost blocks between hardware detection blocks. Everything is auto-generated (paths, sections, SML). After this screen I restarted JMRI and tried again it only made it to the second block (pic 2) even though I manually clicked "Allocate Next" until all blocks allocated but it never restarted. There is nothing in the session.log

Reorienting a turnout without completely deleting it. 2 #layouteditor
I am not sure what happened, but I have one turnout that ended up in the wrong orientation. I have the turnout and block detection and turnout position sensors all working, so I am trying to figure out if there is a way to just reorient the turnout without completely deleting it and then setting everything up again. I was looking for a way to "disconnect" the turnout, like you can do in Anyrail, but was able to figure out how to make that work. Any simple solutions or do I just need to delete and then re-add a new turnout in the correct orientation? -- Heath @ Human[c]ity http://www.humancity.org http://www.riversidetransfer.nyc http://www.manhattanmodelers.com

Loading table content and panels xml file using MacOS Mongomery from Dropbox - Error Loading File Appears 3 #mac-os
Hi All Would anyone be able to assist with this issue. History back ground I have been using windows 10 PC's for many years with no issues and dropbox to store the information. This has been working without any issues for over 10 years. Now the PC's have been at different locations and still operating. Now one of the PC's is normally has the preferences configured to the railway hardware and the other PC the preferences are set to Simulator. Absolutely nothing new there works amazing. Loading Issue using Montgomery OS Now Moving on to the issue now. I was presented with the opportunity to change to a Mac mini using Catalina OS and Montgomery OS. I loaded the latest test version of JMRI onto Montgomery and all set up correctly in simulation mode and again using dropbox . When I tried to load table content and panels and selecting the correct xml file version. I get these error messages as shown below So then I decided to try using Catalina OS and repeat the same JMRI set up with Dropbox again. To my surprise when I selected load table contents and panels and the same xml file version. Every thing loads correctly as expected with no issues appreciate any assistance or ideas to resolve the issue Regards Peter

Stop All Auto Trains bug
All, Windows 10 JMRI 5.11.3 Noticed while running four of my trains in auto that if I have a derail and I try to stop all the trains some of them slow down to stop, but resume on their own upon reaching next block. In Auto Trains window I press "Stop All Auto Trains". All trains start slowing and show "Resume". Some trains then contiue and show "Stop". Had not noticed this in version 5.8. Roger

JMRI & Engine Driver Issue 3 #enginedriver
Hi, Members 1.1k Edit Posted 1 hour ago One for the more learned amongst us to have a look at. I have the following set up : NCE Powercab, JMRI running on a Raspberry Pi via NCE USB using M Steve Todd's files, Panel Pro with a touchscreen panel to operate turnouts, turnout motors are DCC Supplies Cobalt Digital IP. The touchscreen panel works exactly as intended to control the turnouts. I would like the ability to use my phone to become a second throttle. With Wi-Throttle server running, I connected my phone to the WiFi network created by the Raspberry Pi, opened up the Engine Driver app & connected to the server. And here is where it goes wrong. Typing a loco address and then trying to move something , absolutely no response from the loco. If I try to operate a turnout motor via the accessory address , it works perfectly. The loco isn't stuck in consist mode as it works off the bat from the NCE handset using the same DCC address so as far as I know I'm not using the wrong address. On the Wi Throttle server screen I can see the phone throttle is connected and even the address of the locomotive I'm trying to control. The Track power is on. Can anyone give any pointers here? thanks in advance

Experimental "Flatpak" distribution of JMRI 9
A user has been interested in possibly distributing JMRI as a “FlatPak” for Linux. I don’t know much about that method, but apparently the distribution file also includes the JRE, so it’s (at least in theory) easier to install. As an experiment, you can find a 5.10 distribution in this form at https://github.com/JMRI/JMRI/releases/download/v5.10/jmri.5.10.flatpak For more on this, see JMRI/JMRI Issue 11658: https://github.com/JMRI/JMRI/issues/11658 Is anybody familiar enough with this distribution method to be able to try it? Is this something that we should do on an ongoing basis? Bob — Bob Jacobsen rgj1927@...

JMRI and LogicX driving Signals 2 #signals
Wanting to drive a Signal based on a decision 'to set green / red' from a LogicX - already set a sensor 'light' on the screen and switch turnouts,, looking for guidance to then set a dwarf signal. unable to use turnout motor switches as there are two x three-way turnouts used. If there is a write up or Youtube I would appreciate in pointer, all i have seen so far are track sensor based and switched from a single turnout motor. Happy to answer any questions... thanks Randall

Signal Controller Board Suggestions 3
I have JMRI LogicX working through a tree/ladder of turnout to set 'a road in a yard' to the 'Main' from a touch sensor on a Panel. Due to space, I am using two x three-way turnouts meaning I cannot use the turnout motor internal switches to switch leds on the Dward Signals on each road. On the screen, I have a 'sensor' light next to the Road when it is clear to the Main. All good so far and works fine. Looking now for an addressable signal controller board to receive a JMRI command to turn a 'dwarf' signal from 'red' to 'green' when the sensor on the panel is selected (when it sets the required road to main). The signal controller will connect to an AUX bus connected to, in this case, a NCE PowerPro Controller. What Signal Controller Boards are you using to take the command to change the LEDs from JMRI? happy to answer any clarifying questions! Thanks Randall

Train tracking, dealing with gaps 7 #traintracking
I created a nice panel for the museum layout and created train tracking markers on it. It works well except for one show stopping thing. At one spot in the loop there is a detection gap between blocks that kills the tracking. The gap is only 1 or 2 seconds. Is there a workaround for this? Increasing train length is not an option. Installing a new detector is not likely either. George

Sensor Query wrong for Digitrax BDL716 in 5.11.4 3
Version 5.11.4+ R87a9dadc80 (Java 17.0.13) The BDL168 is discontinued and replaced with BDL716 which I have two installed on LocoNet. Upon starting JMRI, if the sensor is high as indicated by the LT5C LED, JMRI shows UNKNOWN then INACTIVE when I QUERY (wrong) if the sensor is low as indicated by the LT5C LED, JMRI shows UNKNOWN then INACTIVE when I QUERY (correct) During use the sensors correctly show inactive and active so changed states work correctly. I don't recall this behavior using version 5.10 but I could be mistaken and I also added a second BDL716 at the same time I upgraded JMRI. The problem is JMRI doesn't "see" the trains sitting in the yard although the LT5C clearly shows high/active so I have to run the train out of the block and back in to initialize the sensor at the correct level. //stevemac

How to delete a turnout with jython 6
I can easily create turnouts, sensors and blocks but I can't delete them from their Panel Pro tables with jython. The only method I found while browsing the class structure was dispose() and that had no effect. So far I am only using the simple jython classes ( if I have the nomenclature correct) in statements like turnouts.newTurnout(...) . -- -Ralph

Cannot start to read decoders 12
Hi, I am running DecoderPro since many years without any Problem. I recently got another Laptop with win11Pro preinstalled - Version 24H2. After installation DecoderPro ask me to get started by checking in with a new Loco placed on the programming track. It comes back with the correct decoder and I store it in the Roster. When I exit and restart DecoderPro I click NEW+ to get a new Loco and decoder recognized, but the field at the bottom left ( Read decoder type) is greyed out. After deinstallation i even deleted all remnants from JMRI and even cleaned the registry as far as I could. I reinstalled - did no new Lokomotive, but tried to import a complete Lokpark/Roster from my second laptop - all 104 locos appeared correctly, but I cannot add a new locomotive/decoder because in the new locomotive Window the button at the bottom left (read decoder Type) is still greyd out. And no - I am not Read only.... I red several JMRI topics, I tried to rebuild the coplete Lokpar/Roster (which did nothing) and so I am stuck. I am working with DR5000/Yamorc YD7001 and Z21, I can work with the Throttle without any Problem, so the connection to my centralStation is ok (over WIFI by the way) I am currently on 5.10.4 Release but tried also the 5.11.4 TestRelease with same result. Can I ask to help me ? Vest regards Erik

Cars Returning to Staging 4 #operationspro
Hello folks I've been using JMRI for Operations for about 12 years, with good success, thanks in no small part to this forum. I operate a windows 10 system computer with JMRI 5.10 with Java 17. I use a 12 track staging yard which serves a large switching layout representing the Birmingham Industrial District (AL) in the steam era and very early diesel era. The staging tracks hold about 12 to 15 or a few more cars. There are two other smaller C/I yards and 7 interchange tracks, plus individual industries and a steel mill. We have monthly operating sessions. The different trains and staging tracks represent the 9 trunk railroads that served Birmingham in the steam era. Staged trains occupy a designated staging track - they always use the same one and return to the same one. Staging tracks are numbered "-1 or -2", and trains are set for "trains may return to staging". So, a train may leave staging 1-1 and then return to staging 1-2. This has worked fine for years and still does, but with a difference. (The overall goal of the RR's operation is to serve the on-layout steel mill, with multiple trains assembling required materials to deliver to the blast furnaces - not a part of this question. Some trains originate at the two smaller C/I yards, rather than staging.) Since upgrading to version 5.10 a month or two ago, I notice that some trains now show part of a (longer) train with cars going out to the layout and part of that same train being moved from the departure track to the future arrival track in staging. In the past, prior to 5.10, I believe all the cars would leave staging, including those with no destination on the layout, and return to staging. Basically these cars "took a ride" and then returned home. The cars "taking a ride" would be included in the departing train's car count as well as the returning train's car count. I liked having the "extra" cars taking a ride and increasing the interest of the various switching operations, and then returning to staging. As an example, the NB L&N Local Freight, is assigned to staging 1-1, and has 18 cars in staging. The build is successful and shows 9 cars departing for the layout, and 9 cars "moving" from track 1-1 to 1-2. Upon inspection of the build report, I find that these 9 "stay at home" cars have no destination on the layout -- either no room or no allowable location. The 9 cars that do have an available destination go away, get set out and 9 new cars return from the layout. The car count leaving and returning is 9 cars. (It would previously have been 18 out and 18 back) Now, I realize that I could instruct my operators to ignore the "move" instruction for cars remaining/returning to staging, but they get confused about the car count along the train's route. I also realize I can just let the cars sit in staging rather than "go for a ride", but what's the fun in that? There are also situations where the train may rightly move a car from an interchange track to a local industry. This is OK and the car count for the train's advance is "correct". So a "blanket" instruction to operators about ignoring "move" instructions wouldn't work either. So, my question is, "cars returning to staging used to go out on the layout, and take a ride back to staging -- can this be made to happen as it used to?" That is, the "move" instruction would have been a "P/U" instruction for leaving staging, and a "S/O" instruction upon return instead of what I'll call a "move to remain" instruction. Thanks for the help. John Stewart Birmingham, AL

Train tracking markers lacking when editing 3 #blocktracking
JMRI 5.10 on W11 I thought I would experiment with train tracking on a layout editor panel. I found that when the loco IDs are placed near a block that there is no indication that something has been placed there. After a train has passed through that area then tiny little blocks show up on the panel in edit mode (if everything was done correctly). This makes me grumpy. George
