Locked Re: Can't find decoder

Dan,

Are you getting any value for CV7 and CV8 in JMRI or the PowerCab? These are
the keystone of identifying the decoder. It sounds like the decoder might
not support readback which will foil any external attempts to id the
decoder. Failing that, you would have to look at it and try to figure what
is the vendor or model of the decoder.

Locked Re: JMRI and DCC++: Exception with Simple Programmer in Ops Accessory Byte/Extended Byte mode #dccpp #4-18

Stefan,

I can send you modified files, no problem, however it might be better to wait a bit. There is good chance the DCC++ BaseStation code does not have to be modified at all. Dave Heap was kind enough to build a custom version of JMRI with improved DCC++ communications for me to try, and the results were quite promising. I was able to send Extended Accessory packets using stock vanilla DCC++ BaseStation code just fine.

I don't believe getting a newer version of JMRI would help.

Locked JMRI not able to read All CVs #esu-decoders #dccpp

I have seen that for ESU decoders (especially v4/Select/V5) it is recommended (required?) to Read All CVs to determine the set-up, not sheet by sheet. However, when I do this I get a timeout before the full read is complete. I have looked at the logs and see some error messages but have no idea where to look for resolution, PC or base station. Does anyone have an idea what might be wrong, please?

Locked Moved sim JMRI not working on active layout

Preamble, I generated a complete panel, layout, and tables for turnouts, sensors and logiX. When I put it on the working layout and made the changes in the preferences to Digitrax, PR4 and the Zephr DCS51 , I have not been able to get the switches to activate on the layout. I have confirmed communication by running locomotives from my roster without any issue. My panel, levers, lights and code buttons all work as they had in the simulator mode. Except they do not activate the physical switches on the layout. I have been working on this for a couple of days and consequently already done a lot of different things. The most drastic action was moving my functioning JMRI to a different file name, the uninstalling all JMRI short cuts and then completely reinstalling JMRI (4.19). This clean setup allowed me to load my new files. Nothing changed though, still no control of the physical switches. I have looked through all other the tables for sensors, turnouts and signal. Then confirmed the names of the turnouts listed as closed or thrown in the actions, reprogrammed the DS64's to insure they matched what the program was calling for. Still no worky. All of the tables defining the levers are (IT) sensors are (IS) and I can't remember the code buttons but they are ( something). My physical turnouts are (LT101-108). I hope this is enough information to help with the diagnosis as I am running out of things to try. I have a gut feeling that the easy answer would be to start from scratch and recreate my project not as a simulation. Thanks in advance for the help!

Any chance that you could send me a copy of your modified DCC++ library? I would save me having to copy and paste the above text and possibly mess everything up. I have a DCC++ base station of my own , as well as a cuple that I built for friends

Locked Re: Can't find decoder

Dan,

If you know what decoders there are in there (maybe after opening the locos up), then getting online to find the documentation for them shouldn't be too much of an issue. Whether JMRI can *find* the decoder in its list of known ones is then irrelevant as you can use the single CV programmer (unless you stumble across a type that's virtually impossible to program unaided, the ones with thousands of (indexed) CVs are a pain).

But when you say that a Power Cab cannot find the decoder, I do get confused. A Power Cab has no knowledge of decoder types and won't look for it; you'd have to do that by hand. So that sort of leads me to thinking that when you say they can't *find*? the decoder, you're actually having trouble *reading* the decoder. And if that's so, then maybe you're not using the programming track? You need to use that in order to read any CV. Writing them CAN be done blind (Programming on the Main or POM) but with two decoders on address 3 on the layout, both will get programmed at the same time. So tkae one loco, put it on the program track, and try again - if that was your issue.

Good luck! If this doesn't work, give us more precise information on what you are doing.
Wouter

CV21 = 0, CV5 = 0, programmed on the main and with my booster and nothing, absolutely nothing I've tried will slow down this locomotive. I tried various status edits with the same results. The manual I found on line tells me everything I need to know about the speed stuff but nothing works. So after 5 hours of trying this and that, including a reset, I'm giving up. I'm trying various things with this decoder for a friend as he couldn't do anything with it. Very seldom does a decoder win the battle on my layout but this one won.
Thanks for your time

Dave,
I changed the Edit->Preferences->Roster setting that you suggested for??"Confirm Writes by Read" to unchecked and tried the "Allow caching ..." both ways.
I also changed the USB baud rate to 9600 to see if running at 19200 was an issue.
None of these changes helped.
In fact, it now seems to lock up sooner than it did originally.

I captured both a section of READ and a section of COMPARE.
The window showing the PanelPro, indicates a problem with the USB interface in RED, I have to power cycle the whole system, NCE & RPi, to clear the issue.? After restart, everything is back to normal.
I have been able to go down through the whole list of CVs reading them one at a time, saving periodically and doing a system restart periodically.
Once again, thanks in advance for the help.

Locked Re: CATS Designer and Signal Head Names #cats

Thanks for your help Rodney.? I'm sure that with our twisted brains Kathy and I will come up with a solution.? At least for now, we are getting? some kind of proceed signal when routes are set through the interlocking - some of our less "railroad aware" operators won't even notice that the displayed aspects are incorrect.? CATS seems to be? working well in all of the tests that Kathy and I have been able to generate with just the two of us operating.? So we have scheduled a test session in March with a full compliment of operators (at least for the tracks and industries that currently exist)? and an experienced CATS dispatcher - I'm sure you know Detlef.? The goal is to see how things work when the level of command activity is increased and more trains are running.? I am anticipating a good CATS session with little or no issues.
Thanks again,
Dave...

Matt,

You shouldn't have any issues upgrading to the next test release.? You can if you wish perform a manual backup from the Settings page.

Ok Steve I will open a new thread. Thank's.?

You are right,? I didn't follow the sudo adduser step as written.

Hey Dave and Phil,
The screen says I have JAVA 1.8.0_171 I think I will be fine upgrading I think I'm afraid just because I have had to enter this data to many times and with 5734 cars I don't think I can do it again my railroad has not moved in over three years. I wanna play train not computer (he says in a whinney voice)
When the patch that Dan has is ready to go I will try the upgrade.

Locked Re: Train drives opposite of labeled directions and fwd light not working

Remember that direction is relative to the locomotive. if the engine is facing left and moving left, and you then pick it up and make it face right, it'll move right.

If you're sure that it's actually moving backwards then your motor leads need to be reversed on the decoder, OR select the option in the decoder's CVs to run in reversed direction. Note that you probably want to wait until you have the directional lighting fixed, to make sure what you and the decoder think is forwards, agrees.

PanelPro 4.18+R37ad3d0
Java 1.8.0_241

Ok so I got my atest rso santa fe converted to dcc with a digitrax HD126D.
Wiring it was actually easy. I did a quick wire and ran it in dc mode and there is surging, but later got it all soldered and it still surges in DC but not DCC.. so off to the questions..
so my big first question...
in JMRI PanelPro- I click throttle and my train comes up. Already programed in with long address and it moves... sweet and guess what... NO SURGING!!!!!awesome.. BUT..
Train is reversed. I choose forward and it goes backwards!!!!
so not a huge issue but not sure why the train controls are reversed or if there is something I did wrong or if PanelPro has a reverse function option for this.
now onto the lights.
I cut a light out of an old tyco and wired it into the back of this train. in PanelPro - I bring up the throttle and hit lights... the rear lights come on. I cannot get the front lights to come on.
so in the configuration on functions it shows what wires for lights, they are wired that way....
if I drive the train fwd or reverse, even though the labels are backwards, I never get a front light and rear light stays on no matter what.
now I hooked power to the bulb and it works so its not burned out.
any thoughts???

Locked Re: Updating Roster while not connected to the layout

the best solution is to start DecoderPro using one of the simulators (eg Loconet simulator)? and then click 'edit only' in the lower right corner (where you select between programing on main, programming track, or edit only).

A lightweight solution that may help, without having to make a new simulator profile, is to just set things to edit aove.

Using Dec. Pro 4.18 with WIN 10.? I wish to update the loco roster with additional info (cost, purchase date, ?etc.) while not connected to the layout.
Some times I can double click a loco and the loco's entire page comes up.? Other times I am unable to open a page.
Is it possible to edit and update the info while not connected?
Thanks,
Ed Woz.

My computer has

Matt, if the computer runs Windows XP or newer (I don't think it will load on 95, although 98 it might...) and has Java 8, it can upgrade JMRI to the latest.? I have several laptops with XP, and I loaded Java 1.8.0_151 (I think) and JMRI 4.19.3ish.? I also have updated several laptops from Vista to Win7, and a couple of those to Win10, although I also upgraded the memory from 2 gigabytes to 4 gigabytes to keep it from being abominably slow.?
