Re: Signal Mast Logic Translation Latency #sml

Sorry for the trouble you’re having.

Getting "the same result running the layout in simulation” pretty much rules out problems with the physical C/MRI network and LocoNet.

So we need to look at what’s happening within JMRI itself.

The timescale of "changing the signal aspect from the mast table will choke up and take anywhere from seconds to several minutes to change” is very long to explain by the computer merely being busy. There’s probably some explicit delays in there. It’s not about input timing, debouncing, etc, as you’re seeing it when directly driving the mast aspect from the mast table.

Let’s try to get a bit more information which might narrow this down. When testing with the simulator:

A) Are you seeing the problem on all masts, or just some?

B) Does it happen consistently once it starts, or does it come and go? If it’s consistent, perhaps some resource is getting used up that eventually slows down the operation.

C) When delay is happening, do other things seem slow too? E.g. selecting another row in the table, windows moving, pulling down a menu, etc?

D) This comment seems to indicate that there are no Logix involved in the signaling:

I use logix and a few custom scripts that only run during operations (rarely). The logix is primarily for telling the system a Digitrax LT switch is supposed to correspond to a CMRI CT switch. I also have some logix rules that can disable all turnouts to digitrax users and selectively "unlock" switches by the dispatcher. But nothing directly interacts with signal masts in logix.
It would be good to confirm that. There’s a brief time during PanelPro startup where you can press F8 to disable Logix. Could you please try that and see if it makes any difference?

E) Similarly, if you _temporarily_ disable any scripts you’re loading in the Preferences -> Startup Pane, does that change anything?

F) Finally, could you please open the Memory Usage Monitor from the Debug menu, click “Update”, and let me know what the three numbers say? Then click “Collect Memory”, which will give you three new numbers, please include them in the reply.

Thanks!

Bob

We run at the minimum baud of 9800 for now until our network is complete, then we will consider raising the rate. We are getting no initialization messages, I have monitored the network metrics closely and get a poll time of about 80ms on average. We probably have about 200 ft of cable in the network connecting node to node. We use a RS485 serial with 3 pins (A, B, Ground). Changing how many pins we use is not an option as our custom boards will not allow it. As far as I can tell the CMRI network is running as usual.

Some other possibly relevant info: we were running JMRI 5.8 till yesterday when I pushed us to 5.10. We are using the recommended Java version 17. We use output mast matrix "signal masts" for our configuration. We run the NS-2008 system.??

Re: Difference Between Compare and Reset #decoderpro

Thomas,
?
While I use a Digitrax EVOXD for main track power, on the programming track where I do all my programming, I use a Sprog 3.
?
Would the possibility of a slot issue affect there?
?
And bluntly, your suggested procedure, while once again cumbersome and time consuming, would not explain why a CVs tab compare would miss the "bad" CV.
?

Thanks Dan.? Keep forgetting that 1 train restriction.? Had my Arrival track set for pickups "any"

Re: Paragon4 (400a) Decoder Programming issues

Joe,
?
I've also posted before about my own experience with CV 217 and Paragon3s. I've mentioned the values that have worked for me with various models (20-70), and that the trick on the programming track seems to be to write the new value, and then read it back to confirm. If the the new value did write, you've found your setting.
?

I am convinced it does not have to do with the CMRI network as I get the same result running the layout in simulation at home on a very powerful computer.
Are you using ANY "Logix", "LogixNG", or "Jython Scripting" which can cause a signal mast to change its indication? That could cause the "SML logic" to "oscillate" between indications - one from JMRI's SML logic, and another from the other "logic". I would suggest that you look at the JMRI "Signal Masts" table, and look for one or more masts that are changing in odd ways.

What Baud rate are the CPNodes running at? Can you run the network at a higher Baud rate reliably? How much cable exists in your RS-422.RS-485 network?

Do you see _any_ problems where JMRI must re-initialize _any_ CMRI nodes? If so, you will need to resolve the problems that cause the "re-initialization" problems. "Re-initialization" should NOT be necessary on a well-architected RS422/RS-485 network.

If you have "Re-initialization" problems, then the problem is often a hardware problem. I would suggest that the "4-wire" RS-422/RS-485 connection is likely a problem, and that a properly-installed 5-wire cable, with a "hack" to connect each "fifth wire" to the "ground" _at each end_ will likely reduce/resolve the "re-initialization" problem. But that is not a JMRI problem or a JMRI solution, so I won't go into that any further.

There are other "issues" with RS-422/RS-485 networks, but those are not JMRI problems, so I won't go into those any further.

Re: Chaining transits with a different locomotive #dispatcher

Steve,

There is nothing in the log using a basic level.?

Does it work if using a simulated connection? I'm using a DCC EX command station and the simulation mode is not very reliable.

If I select a higher level for the dispatcher in the log there is an error (see at the bottom of the log hereafter) and the trains stops.? Here is a copy of the log file.??

Can you have a look ?

Thanks.

Jean-Louis.

See if there's anything in the logs. Also, in the debug menu you can up the logging level of the dispatcher to debug or trace.?
See if it's waiting on an allocation, or signal. The signal issue can be easily checked by running dispatcher with the no signals option.
Does it work if using a simulated connection?

Re: Virtual Signal Masts for End-Blocks

All my spurs are terminated with virtual dwarf masts. All are set to stop and saved. My SML is auto-generated. The mast at the turnout throat rightly displays approach when the turnout is aligned to the ?spur.

Re: Help With crossover

Hi Dave
Yes that worked.First time i did it,i got confused when it ask for 4 blocks so i made up 4 blocksand of course it wouldnt let me attach one sensor to 2 (different named) blocks.
Thankyou working nicely.

Re: Difference Between Compare and Reset #decoderpro

Did you do the slot monitor test mentioned above?
You did not actually mention which DCC system you are using. From one of your replies, seems to be a Digitraxx system.
Clearing the slots with Slot monitor (or Op switches) can fix lots of issues.
?
One way to find the exact cause:
1, do the reset.
2, do write full sheet for each tab, testing after each tab.
You can then tell which tab has the bad CV setting.
If it is the basic page with long and short addresses, then the CS may be the issue (Slots).

Re: Virtual Signal Masts for End-Blocks

Which signal system are you using for the signal masts? ?Have you created the signal mast logic (SML) from Signal-A to Virtual-A?

Subject: [jmriusers] Virtual Signal Masts for End-Blocks
Date: Thursday, April 10, 2025 9:21 PM

Running JMRI 5.11 and have created a number of Signal Masts, each using DCC Signal Heads (I use NCE Light-Its). I am wondering if I have setup something wrong, or if someone can some provide some guidance on the following situation.?
?
I have a turnout which either continues the mainline, or if thrown diverges to an end track. I setup two rules for my signal mast (Signal-A). The first from Signal-A to Signal-B (both on the mainline) and based on the turnout being set to Closed.?
?
For the second rule, it is Signal-A to Virtual-A where the turnout is Thrown.?
?
Virtual-A is defined as a Virtual Signal Mast as it is at the end of a track line. However, Signal-A is always at a Stop state because Virtual-A is never set to a state unless I manually set it to Clear. When I do this, and if the Turnout is Thrown, then Signal-A correctly changes to Clear. But otherwise Signal-A is not in the correct state because it is linked to Virtual-A and Virtual- is unset.?
?
Am I using the Virtual Signal in the right way for these situations where the track ends??

Signal Mast Logic Translation Latency #sml

Over the past few weeks we have started running into a long latency issue between the signal mast logic and the turnouts that controls each LED. We are using a Digitrax system with a CMRI network for Signals and Turnouts. Our network consists of about 17 CPNODES at the moment with a few more later to come. We have just over 100 Signal Masts with about 75%~80% of them in working order. In recent weeks as we continue to expand our CMRI network I started noticing an issue where the nodes are polling correctly with zero errors but signal aspects change slower than usual. With times where the change is so long the signals just give impossible aspects at times. Now the interesting part is our turnouts are on the same network as the signals and have no issues even while the issue is present on the signals. Directly changing the outputs using the turnouts table works just fine for changing the individual outputs, but changing the signal aspect from the mast table will choke up and take anywhere from seconds to several minutes to change. The issue seems to be most prevalent on startup, and waiting 5-10 minutes before running will get the choke out, but if the system is under heavier load such as 5+ trains usually it will start to choke up again. I am convinced it does not have to do with the CMRI network as I get the same result running the layout in simulation at home on a very powerful computer.?

Any help on this issue would be much appreciated
Thanks,
- Hunter Shelby?

Sounds like a java issue. My Win11 laptop required java 21 to run JMRI 5.4 version last year. Good luck

Recreating your roster index shouldn't eliminate the operations part of JMRI.? Something else happened.? Do you have more than one profile?

Re: DecoderPro no loco roster #roster

I am lost as to why I cannot access my railroad in operation pro. I have been using the switch list almost every day to operate sine 2022. Evrything was fine tuned to fit the railroad. And yesterday after fixing the loco roster in decoder pro the railroad name is showing active without the information of the railroad.?

Do I give up and find another way of creating switch list to operate my railroad??

Bxp88’s always powered from the output of a PSX breaker with all 5 breakers getting power from track output of command center.

Can anyone tell me what happened to the last table that use to be part of the list of tables

Thank you

Thinking about it, if the bxp88 was powered by a 9v power supply and now is only powered from the track, that would also account for the different behavior.

Any info on how to find any other variables controlling speed during automation.
The engines ,3 of them, ?dont run very fast even at 100% speed by ?throttle but the automation is running them at a hardly moving speed when i set speed to max in blocks and 200% in creation. ?Thus they stop when going over switches as they have no momentum to get them past the 1.5 inch throwing mechanism which does not have power.

What you describe sounds like you are using "head only". Try loco by itself with the correct length and "full trian" detection.
