Re: Cannot start to read decoders
Erik, I suspect we'll hear from others on this, but I noticed what I believe is the same behavior on my system, and perhaps it was a change made during a recent update.? When you open your Roster, click on any entry and you'll see that the buttons at the bottom right will transition from "greyed out" to "active."? It was a head-scratcher for me until I found the solution, and I recall restarting JMRI several times before I discovered it.? HTH!

JMRI Wont Start
I remover JAVA 11 and installed JAVA 17 then JMRI 5.10, Would not open or start. Then JMRI 5.11.4 Would not open or start.
?
I have used windows JMRI for loading a new JMRI. I been using JMRI for years. Due to getting hit by fraud my CU had me clear every thing off this computer and reload the applications and files.
?
What to do?

Re: SML for Reversing Loops
Ralph, The track plan violates the poorly documented rule that there can only be one direct connection between two neighbor blocks. In your example, the loop blocks at each end have two connections to the turnout blocks via the normal and diverging legs. The each loop needs at least two blocks. ?You also need intermediate signals at the new block boundaries. Dave Sand ----- Original message ----- From: "Snorkel via groups.io" <ralphsokel=[email protected]> Subject: [jmriusers] SML for Reversing Loops Date: Friday, March 28, 2025 3:52 PM I constructed a simple layout editor panel with two back to back reverse loops. The "auto generate signaling pairs" only created 1 pair. Ok, it has me confused a little but if the 5.11 test version has it I can give that one a try.
To complete the reason why I thought it already was implemented was because I saw the dark mode used on the JMRI.org webpage already, for example these 2 places: The images in these 2 links are in the dark mode. The mentioning of the dark-mode was in the release notes of the 5.9.7, I assumed it was part of all releases after that but it seems I was wrong. I'll go give the 5.11 a try soon. |

Cannot start to read decoders
Hi, I am running DecoderPro since many years without any Problem. I recently got another Laptop with win11Pro preinstalled - Version 24H2. After installation DecoderPro ask me to get started by checking in with a new Loco placed on the programming track. It comes back with the correct decoder and I store it in the Roster.
?
When I exit and restart DecoderPro I click NEW+ to get a new Loco and decoder? recognized, but the field at the bottom left ( Read decoder type) is greyed out.?
After deinstallation i even deleted all remnants from JMRI and even cleaned the registry as far as I could.
?
I reinstalled? - did no new Lokomotive, but tried to import a complete Lokpark/Roster from my second laptop - all 104 locos appeared correctly, but I cannot add a new locomotive/decoder because? in the new locomotive Window the button at the bottom left (read decoder Type) is still greyd out. And no - I am not Read only....
?
I red several JMRI topics, I tried to rebuild the coplete Lokpar/Roster (which did nothing) and so I am stuck.
?
I am working with DR5000/Yamorc YD7001 and Z21, I can work with the Throttle without any Problem, so the connection to my centralStation is ok (over WIFI by the way)
?
I am currently on 5.10.4 Release but tried also the? 5.11.4 TestRelease with same result.
Can I ask to help me ?
Vest regards?

AFAIK, Dark mode was only added 2 weeks ago and has not been released yet. It would be in the next test and Production releases.
You could download an unreleased build at to see if that meets your expectations -- Peter Ulvestad Linux Mint 22.1, JMRI 5.11.4plus, Java 21.0.6 JMRI Users Group Moderator ( /g/jmriusers ) JMRI Developers Group Moderator ( ) Tam Valley Group Moderator ( ) Sprog-DCC Group Moderator ( ) Edmonton Model Railroad Association ( ) |
Unable to turn dark mode on
#preferences
Hi all, I recently started to use JMRI and I can control my trains just fine, but I would like to set de display to dark mode. My system info: A raspberry pi 4 running on raspberry pi OS bookworm, JMRI version 5.10 and JAVA version 17. I read on the JMRI page that dark mode has been implemented some versions back already, but I've been unable to find the button mentioned on jmri.org The following was mentioned on jmri.org: There's a new "DarkLAF HC" dark-mode setting for the display. To use it, select Settings then Display, then click the button for "DarkLAF HC". When I go to the settings and select display there is no button for DarkLAF HC, I added a screenshot of this. Anyone an idea what's going wrong? Am I in the wrong menu or is something else wrong? |

"Quick question, are you using a password on the windows 10 log in?"
?
Neither of our computers require a password to log in.? Any member who gets there first, just turns on the computer.??
?
Both computers have OS batch files from the DOS era that automatically start the appropriate app and handle a few housekeeping chores,??
?
The entire building is powered down when the last member leaves to save on the electric bill.

"Windows puts up a message after it accepts the login password that it is creating a temporary profile."
?
That is not something that I have ever seen on any windows computer.? I seem that it might be your most important clue as to where to search for the root cause of the problem.? A quick search for windows creates a temp user profile yielded too many hits to resolve here, but the first one led to:
?
Good luck deciphering that.

Re: DecoderPro Opens every time as a new install
Cliff; A friend?was having that trouble plus a couple of others on a new install.? I told him to just select a new decoder (NMRA Raw Cvvs 1-255),? then select save.? It started a Roster of 1 entry for him, but got him past that situation.? If you have an already existing roster, you could locate it then just do IMPORT Copmlete?Roster under File to reload you existing roster. Re: DecoderPro Opens every time as a new install
Thanks Cliff, Quick question, are you using a password on the windows 10 log in? ? I noticed earlier that when I log in using the club password, and since there is no internet connection, Windows puts up a message after it accepts the login password that it is creating a temporary profile.? I suspect this is why Windows keeps making the new temp folder each time it is started. I’ve ordered an inexpensive Wi-Fi router to connect to the PC (this PC has an Ethernet port but no wifi card) to use my cell phone to connect to the internet to see if this will correct the problem. Re: DecoderPro Opens every time as a new install
George,
?
Your log shows a folder named "C:\Users\TEMP.WINDOWS-T0ML932.003\JMRI" that Dave refers to as a "sandbox" and this suggests that some antivirus might have interfered with either the installation of the distributed folder or the execution of the program app.??
?
Since you stated that your club does not have an internet service connection, the antivirus suggestion might be a misleading rabbit hole, but checking for that possibility could provide some new clues. ?Some other program running or or some setting on your computer has forced that decision at run time. ?
?
Our club does not have an internet connection either.? We run PanelPro 5.10 on a Windows10 computer for the layout and DecoderPro 5.11.3 on a windows 7 computer for our workbench.? Both computers using Zulu Java version 17 with only a few hiccups during the installation process.? ?The layout computer is hardwired to the WiFi router.? There is no antivirus running on either machine.??
?
The layout and the workbench both use Digitrax DCS 210 connections, but that is extraneous to this puzzle.
?
Updates are carried in on memory sticks but one member has been advocating using a cellphone hotspot connection.? We have not tried that.

George, According to the messages.log file, Windows is launching JMRI in what is known as a "sandbox". ?This is an isolated and temporary environment. ?When JMRI is stopped, the sandbox is destroyed. Since I rarely use Windows, someone else will need to figure out is happening. In the meantime, you can look at Windows S Mode: ?. This might be forcing JMRI into a sandbox.
