Locked Re: JMRI on a VISTA computer #upgrading

I wiped an old Win7 laptop and loaded Ubuntu to run the layout.
Running JAVA17 and JMRI 5.9.3.
You'll find the GUI interface is more like Win7 and not so much like Win11.

Certainly the morning milk run and usually on the early passenger local.
?
For LCL, boxcars are usually dropped at the station freight or local drayage agent track.
Someone must be responsible for custody transfer of the load(s).
Local drayage handles transfer to the customer.
?
Parcel and larger freight delivery from a station or flag stop was usually handled by REA or railroad agent aboard a baggage car.
Again, that's custody transfer.
You don't shut up an agent in a boxcar.

Locked Re: Moving a locomotive from one yard track to another #operationspro

Hey Tom,
?
Couple of things...
?
According to your screen grabs, your shop track is 140' long. ?This should be enough for a consist of CN FA2s, eh? ?I am able to get consists to move into, and out of, the shop tracks if there is/are locos in the shop...
?
<--- Moves consist in and single loco out
<--- Moves consist in and consist out
? <--- Moves single loco in and consist out
?
Settings for this:
1) Staging Option = "make departure track available after train is built"
2) Loco Ready track is in a "Staging" location - allows the train's "Required Loco" to be zero, and lets you select which outbound trains can build from the Ready track. ?Length also needs to accommodate either single or consist locos.
3) Shop track is in a "Yard" location - track length has to be long enough for either single or consisted locos, "Planned Pickups" set to 100%, services only locos (no car types allowed).
4) CN Hostler train - Route similar to your's, but from Ready to Shop, not directly from the Yard, and under "Train Build Options", requires loco change at the Shop line of the Route, using "Auto HPT".
?
The key to consists is that there is only enough room in the Ready track for one loco or one consist. ?Since the program will send out any power in the track (since it's Staging), the track can have any loco setup (single or consist). ?Also, make sure to allow the CN Hostler train to set out and pick up (use train or route).
?
As model railroaders are often faced with situations where we have to compromise. I would argue that if you wanted to cycle a consist into the shop, just leave it as is and explain that the shop forces didn't have time to go through and pull all the MU cables and reselect all the switches to move the unit singularly...
?
?
?
Now, as for the scenario of moving a loco into the Shop when there is not one already in the Shop, a different train is needed. ?It actually requires two trains, one for each direction.
?
  1. ?I created "Hostler (in only)" train that can take inbound power to the Shop if no loco is already there. This train requires no loco since it starts in the Ready track location (Staging) and it will move however many locos are there (single/consist). ?The Route is just 2 lines, the Ready track location with only pickups, and the Shop location with only set outs.
  2. ?When you have the reverse situation (loco in Shop but none on Ready track), you call up the "Hostler (out only)" train and it moves the power from the Shop back to Ready track. ?This train uses "Auto HPT" since it might need to move a consist or a single loco.
?
Finally, the loco or locos that are in the Ready track when you build an outbound train, will show for the train as being in the Ready track and the cars for the train will be in their yard tracks when the manifest prints...
?
<--- Locos show on Ready track and the rest of train in yard track.
?
In the end, I find it odd you have only one Ready track. ?Do you not have more than one set of power (single/consist) in town at once? ?I think if you just add more tracks to the Loco Ready location, and then use the "choose track for depart/arrive" option for staging, you could designate which power is sent to the Shop and which should be assigned to a train...

Furthermore, if you filter the Ready tracks, you could designate which were for Steam servicing and thus allow only Steam power, and do the same for Diesel units. ?Consider this for when you want to expand the service area of the layout!
?
I guess it comes down to how you are employing the tracks you have and what moves you need to have your power make...
?

Locked Re: Correcting the decoder #definitions

There isn't. The thing to do is put it on the program track, choose new loco=>read type from decoder. If presented with a list, choose the one you actually wanted, then on the all CVs page read the full page.

Save to a new entry.

This'll leave you without extras like function labels, roster images - whatever more you may have set up, which will be manual labour...

Can a PIKO dcc sound decoder (the latest - not uhlenbrock sourced) be programmed in JMRI.? The only option I am faced with is buying a new preprogrammed one from Piko if they will do it?? My model has shot the drive function though sound and lights all work well.? No throttle response.
?
Any advice.? Piko's new decoders use mp3 files for sound

Update,
?
I created a test transit? got it going to another section but it stops also.
?I then found in one of my Signal mast logic it will not discover?
Trying to figure that out?
It looks like the signal was not working which was causing the train to stop,

Which error do you get when you try to start DecoderPro?

I recall that JMRI was not very happy with Vista 5 or 8 years ago.
Clearly limited to Java 8 support level so 4.26. Win7 wasn't much
better but was not flakey.

An old box running VISTA, I'd wipe it and find a Linux build for it
instead. It performs much better that way.

Nags,

I recommend that you go to Preferences -> Config Profiles. ?Use the "Copy" button to create a copy of the existing profile. ?Also, enable the Profile Selector.

Now you can select which profile to use when starting PanelPro. ?Each one will have its own set of preferences.

As I've tried to sort out issues my JMRI enviro is being regularly changed. I want to set up a separate testing environment.
?
Is this simply a case of copying my user file and amending preferences to point to that file, or is there a better way?
?
Thanks.

I will give more details once I do more testing on this tomorrow as to what I did.
Here are the steps I followed to create my train that exchanges a locomotive between the locomotive track and the shop:
?
1. Created a new location called "Kamloops (CN)-(shop)", with a yard track that only accepts locomotives.? For the CN shop track I set planned pickups to 100%, as I want to exchange locomotives, and the shop track only has room for one locomotive (for the most part).??
?
2. Created a route called "CN locomotive" that travels from the locomotive track, to the shop, then back to the locomotive track.
?
3. Created a new train called "CN Hostler", which uses the "CN locomotive" route.? This train requires one locomotive, and has a locomotive change at the "Kamloops (CN)-(shop)" location.??
?
4. Built the train.? Here is the resulting manifest.
?
This workflow assumes the following:
?
1. There is at least one locomotive on the locomotive track.
2. There is one locomotive at the shop.
?
So for this workflow you could never have the case where the shop is empty.? As well, I have not figured out how to handle a consist.? I am assuming that the prototype would service a single locomotive in the consist, so it seems that if I want a locomotive in the consist to have a chance to go to the shop that I would need to break the consist before I ran this train, then recreate it again once both locomotives are on the locomotive track again.? As well, if one of the locomotives in the consist went to the shop, I would need to temporarily mark the other one as out of service, so that JMRI would not select it alone for a train.??
?
Any comments or suggestions are most welcome.

Hi guys,
?
I have a transit setup??
?
The train starts in section 110 goes to next section 89 then in section 106 and the train stops
?
I checked the section and found no actions defined in section 106
?
I then terminated the train in dispatcher and ran the train using my Power Cab and it moved thru section 106 no problem
?
?
Any ideas or suggestions

Gord -
?
I was having an identical problem to what you describe about "Setting" cars a week or so ago.
?
It turned out it was a conflict between what I wanted to do, and what either the "route" for the car, or the "location" of the car, was set at and permitted me to do.? I fixed my issue by going to either the 'route' or the 'location', and changed the "train direction" settings.? I don't remember exactly, but I think it was the Location, using the "Edit Location" button.
