Locked Re: PR3 Power supply

I'll chip in with my PowerPax history. I came before the PTB-100 was
available, maybe before the PR3 too. But it came with an 18V supply. I've
been using it successfully for at least 6 years now, maybe more. Right now,
only the new Tsunami 2's need me to bypass the PowerPax. That's running with
a DCS200 and I think that's about when I got the PowerPax was when the
DCS200 came out.

Hi there, I have had similar problems with my PR4. Can anyone suggest the best product to use as the power supply and the PS14 jack on the PR4?
Or alternatively an adaptor between standard chargers and the jack on the PR4?

If you have an NCE Power Pro system, you can set Turnout Feedback Mode to MONITORING and your JMRI panel will be updated by NCE throttle or Mini Panel commands.

Unfortunately the NCE Power Pro and hence JMRI cannot directly monitor local pushbuttons connected directly to DCC accessory decoders. For that case, You need to use the Tortoise contacts and an AIU.

My experience with the NCE Power Pro, PowerPax and PTB-100 was similar. The PowerPax did not work as well as the PTB-100 with my Power Pro.

The three wires connected to pins 5, 6 & 7 need to go directly to the AIU GND terminal and two input pins of the AIU. They should be routed close together and preferably lightly twisted together.

The GND connection between pin 5 and the AIU GND terminal must not be made via any bus ground. Multiple Tortoises position switches must not use a shared ground back to the AIU GND.

To do otherwise invites false triggering of the AIU inputs.

Hi P?r,

I have uploaded a script example that will hopefully be helpful.

/g/jmriusers/files/VSD/SensorListener.py

You have to open the LocoNet Monitor to see the transponding messages.
Open the sensor table (Tools >> Tables >> Sensors) and click on an sensor state.

The suggested solution to the Android change is to operate in Airplane mode. This turns the phone system radio off so we're not trying to connect to the net over that network.

Roger,

Downloading a new image from Steve seems a drastic way to upgrade JMRI when all you need to do is download a linux version of JMRI and extract it.
If you checked all the links Steve provide, he has one that goes to a page where he has a full write up on how to upgrade JMRI

Locked Re: Having issues connecting on closed Wifi

Bradley: Turning off auto connect removes one potential problem but the other is that your phone may be looking for an internet connection - and there isn't one on your layout router I presume. There should be a setting somewhere in your phone to force it to ignore internet connectivity when connecting to a wifi network.

Rather than fiddling with your phone settings you can automate all of this with the free WifiPrioritizer app. It allows you to fine tune when to connect to which networks and to ignore or consider internet connectivity separately for each. In your case, you could have your phone set up exactly as it used to be but then lock on to your layout router whenever it is active.

Sorry, asked a relatively simple question in a complex way...

Main computer tied to Loconet (either with a LB-USB or directly to a DCS240) and WiFi clients (RPi's) running JMRI instances.? Either of the client to server pieces of code (Loconet Client/Server or LoconetOverTCP) are supposed to work but do not. 4.16 on main, 4.17.3 on clients.

What's broken or has changed since 4.14.

I have thought about trying to sell the Power Pax on ebay, but that is just passing on the problem. ?

I hope that this doesn¡¯t send this thread on a side track, but I believe that the newest Soundtraxx Tsunami decoders no longer require the boost of the PTB-100 in programming and in fact do better with out the PTB-100. ?So I have a switch now on my programming track to bypass the PTB-100 when programming the newest Tsunami decoders. ?

I would recommend going against adding more voltage to the layout just to facilitate program track programming. ?That would be putting everything else you have at greater risk of damage.

As Dick has said, a bad idea. The ground wire needs to be parallel to the signal wires and go directly to the AIU ground. To do otherwise invites trouble, ranging from false triggering to voltage spike damage.

The reasons are that:
- Your input connection becomes a loop antenna prone to picking up electrical noise.
- Your earth paths (part of the loop) will likely be carrying other current, with consequent voltage fluctuations, creating nuisance triggering and possible device damage.

Hi Dave
Sorry for the delay, been sick. I am confused on your last reply, see below about a ground loop.

My Assy. Bus is power by a separate external power supply, unrelated to my DCC power system.

My GND side of my Assy. Bus is what¡¯s running to my AIU¡¯s GND, along with the GND on my BD20¡¯s and the GND side of my external power for my Switch8 Mk2¡¯s.

The positive + side of my Assy. Bus goes to the other external side of my Switch8 MK2¡¯s.

Since the switches inside the tortoise are isolated, where is the GND Loop supposively happening at?

Thanks for any any input here.

Frank,

Get a 16-18VDC power supply for your PR3. I use an 18VDC 1.1 amp power brick salvaged from an old inkjet printer.? Then get rid of the Power Pax. You won't need it. My PR3 with that 18VDC supply will reliably read/write to any sound decoder I've tried (just about all popular brands except MRC).
