Locked Re: Panel Pro - Layout Editor - looking for up to date Tutorial

John,

When thinking about signaling, think about the characteristics that you you want. I prefer western US practices which are primarily route signaling with implied speeds. Eastern US tends to be speed signaling which sometimes implies a route. Note: I will probably get some push back on my definitions.

The prototype deals with signal masts and their aspects. Signal masts have one or more signal heads. The aspect determines the signal head appearances. A ¡°diverging¡± aspect is normally indicated by red over green or yellow appearances.

Don¡¯t worry about implementation details when working out the signal head/mast question. DCC Signal masts can be signal head based masts or even turnout based masts.

A cross-over is always at least two blocks, one for each straight route. A slip (including throat to throat) is always one block, but has two turnouts.

Keep in mind that signals protect one or more blocks to the next signal. Including the approach track segment with the turnout moves the signal away from the turnout and makes the control point much larger.

A correctly drawn layout editor track plan with a prototypical block topology using signal masts and signal mast logic results in a fully functional ABS signaling system.

2) Found Quaker valley ok lots of writing but they sem to be persuing my objective , Not sure at this stage what the difference between Sig Heads and SSL & Sig Masts + Signal Mast logic might be, I'll think about and reasearch. ( SSL ? please, Single Signal Lamp ?)
3) Also your warning about turnouts becoming "blocks" is significant as I was lumping them in with track segments / bigger blocks..... A crossover between two main lines would become a block in its own right? Or does it split in the centre between the two parallel tracks ?
No doubt the reason that Interlocking drawings label turnouts with an OS number and detect vehicles on the OS.. Is joining two turnouts throat to throat acceptable as one OS item ? ( Guess it becomes a double slip ).

Many thanks for your assistance

? Place turnout icons on the panel and connect them with track segments.
? Create turnouts in the turnout table. Use default feedback settings.
? Assign turnouts to the turnout icons. Clicking on the turnout icons should change the turnout state and the icon.
? Turnout context menu: Edit item.
? Create occupancy sensors in the sensor table.
? Assign blocks to the turnout icons and track segments. Set the occupancy sensor for each layout block.
? Context menu: Edit item.
? Set Block
? Select Create/Edit
? Select Sensor tab and select sensor name.
? Verify that the panel is valid using the Tools >> Check items.
? Add sensor icons to the panel to simulated train movements. Verify that the correct tracks show occupied.
? Create signal masts in the signal mast table.
? Assign the signal masts to the appropriate block boundaries.
? Context menu: Set Signal Masts...
? Use the Signal Mast Logic table to generate the signal mast logic.
? Verify the SML works by setting blocks occupied and setting turnout positions.
Obviously there are a lot of details missing, but it provides a general flow.

Step 5 is very important. Since you are talking about interlocking plants, the block topology must be correct. The basic rule is that each turnout or turnout group must be its own block. This provides the necessary block boundaries for placing signal masts which protect the interlocking.

I had a look at Part 1, it is well presented but unfortunately you diverge from my path very early by your choice of DCC control and Digitrax.
My path is to avoid DCC signal control ( with the exception of loco cuurent draw )? and seperate signalling forom traction a per CMRI or its derivation MRCS where input / outputs are to and from panel switches or track sensors etc.

I appreciate and thank you for your response and wish you every success and fun in the model RR hobby

The "roster.xml" file is not your roster. It's simply an index of some of the key parts of your roster, which is the individual ".xml" files in the "roster" folder, one for each loco. It can be recreated/updated at any time by using the Actions->Rebuild Roster Index menu item.
<>

The roster export file is actually a ZIP file of the individual ".xml" files in the "roster" folder. Give it a ".zip" extension to it and you can examine/extract the files from it.

2) I have an export file from my friends layout, I want to import it into the roster group designated for his layout. When I attempt to "Import Roster", it wipes out my entire existing roster. I made a copy of my roster.xml before I started mucking with this issue; so no harm-no foul.
Making a copy of "roster.xml" is a waste of time and doesn't save anything useful. The way to save your roster is make a copy of the "roster" folder. Hopefully that hasn't been lost.

Do an Actions->Rebuild Roster Index command and if will create an updated index of all the files currently in your "roster" folder.

How do I import his locos into my JMRI roster without wiping out my existing roster,
Extract all the files from his roster export file, manually add them to your "roster" folder and do an Actions->Rebuild Roster Index.

preferably into the roster group set up for his locos?
Not quite so easy. Roster group membership is stored in the individual ".xml" files, so any roster groups he already had will appear in your list of groups after you have done an Actions->Rebuild Roster Index.

If you right-click on the headings row of your roster list in the main roster window, there are various columns you can show/hide and then sort by, including last modified date. That may or may not be helpful.

The easy way would have been for him to add all his locos to a group before exporting them...

Problem Solved!

This may help someone using DCC++ in the future.

To make things work successfully, it is necessary to go to the?Configure Base Station option on the DCC++ menu tab. From here, ensure you have added all the required turnouts and sensors to the system. (I had added sensors, but only one turnout. Hence the problems.)

Hopefully I can now move on.

Morning everyone.

Thanks for the replies. John, Turnout animation is enabled. Dave, I do have a turnout name assigned to the icon.

I have just built a couple more layouts based on the 2011 UK clinic. Obviously, the program has moved on since then.

With my latest build, the single LH turnout is fine. It changes when I click on it, so that is good.

The LH changeover is not working. I have created two turnouts to make up the crossover, and they are both assigned to the icon. The top left connection of the icon is blue, and I'm guessing this is the issue. I'll haver a look through the site, but is there something I am messing up here?

Locked Re: DR5000 XpressNet

For USB you just need to connect to the DR5000 direct. Three com ports are then made, one for the DR5000, plus Loconet and Xpressnet ones, JMRI can then connect via either or both. The DR5000 software can also run at the same time. An LiUSB can be used if further from the DR5000 than a USB lead reaches.

Hi Mario,

The INFO message indicates that your OpenAL installation is working correctly.

I do not have the skill to analyze the ERROR message. VSD may not work with a NCE PowerCab system (see /g/jmriusers/message/153480).

You might try a JMRI throttle instead of a physical throttle. VSD SHOULD work in JMRI Simulator mode (NCE Simulator or Digitrax LocoNet Simulator) together with a JMRI throttle.

1) Make sure you are using the same Connection Prefix on both machines. Since Win7 machine is working with your panel, change the?Connection Prefix on the WinXP machine to match the working one.
