Nice to hear from you Denny!

Your experience raises another point: Surge protectors don¡¯t last forever. After enough hits (or a big enough single hit), they¡¯re not ¡°protecting¡± any more. This can lead to a false sense of confidence¡.

Larry,

I thought I would add a couple of tips to help you along. First and you may already have figured this out, the numeric part of the System Name, ie. the 257 of LT257 and 258 of LT258, are the switch numbers that the SE8c will respond to for controlling the signal. (You can enter switch mode on a capable throttle such as a DT400 and control the signal directly - useful for testing your hardware setup).

Second, you should always assign a User Name to each signal. This is so that later when the need arises you can easily change the name and JMRI will handle the associations but you cannot change the System Name.

I hope this is helpful and not confusing.

I would highly recommend a whole surge protector be installed in their house. I believe that it saved my major electrical components for the lightening strike at my house. Both neighbors on either side were replacing tVs and other items and they had no whole house surge protectors. For about $500 installed it is worth it.

It won't help you network cables as I found out but it could have been a lot worse for me.

Locked Re: JMRI Ops Launch Issues

Thanks for the help. The solution definitely had to do with profiles. When I got to ¡°set active profile¡± and selected another I had created much earlier when starting with the program. The old profile worked consistently, with many tries to confirm successful launch. I did not have to create a new one with a simulator as connection type. Thanks for the help! This was so easy and enjoyable, after about 20 hours of researching and documenting other failed approaches. Still don¡¯t understand exactly what happened with the profiles, but who cares. Now it works.

Bill,

JMRI is probably hanging up because it's trying to connect but can't.

I'd suggest setting up a profile (or modifying an existing profile, if you have one) with one of the simulators selected as your connection type.

That will prevent it from looking for a physical connection that doesn't exist.

Open up decoderpro, select engine in question and right click. On the menu
about half way down will be something like "media and functions". Select
that and you'll get a window where you can label functions.

It's not pretty done 'cause often different per engine

Locked Re: Locobuffer locking up from data overload?

Billybob,

Yes, that makes a lot of sense! I was checking out all the signal head types in JMRI and "Quad" seemed to be a type that would work, but it had four spots in which to enter turnout addresses but no place to indicate the state, e.g. "Thrown" or "Closed" for that switch command.

The LDT seemed to have what I needed. I'll experiment with it.

In the meantime I have this working in CATS following Rodney's advice, that being, to simply indicate the turnout command for each aspect of each head of each signal within the CATS designer file. Tedious yes but it worked.

I'd prefer eventually to go to signal heads in JMRI because there are parts of the layout that I automate and I'll want to be able to "describe" the entire layout in Layout Editor (Panel Pro) so the automated dispatcher can run trains into and out of staging as well as running them for open house etc. (I'm now using another software product for the automated running but am working on migrating to 100% JMRI).

Thank you for all the help!

Sincerely,

Steve

?I have continued to work on my locations, routes, cars, etc., but only in the Install Test Mode. The changes I make are being stored inthe correct places for My JMRI Railroad, from what I can understand.? I sure hope I can still use the work I havealready done in the Install Test Mode, if I can ever solve the JMRI launchproblems. In the meantime I continue to launch through Install Test. Everythingseems to work just fine there.

?The ¡°Release Notes for JMRI 4.8 release¡± seem to holdpromise for my problem. However I cannot figure out how to try the fix. It saysthat 4.8 will not start cleanly if installed over earlier versions. It alsosays in that the Windows installer ensures this is not an issue¡ªdon¡¯tunderstand what that means. I used Windows to install but still seem to havethe problem.

?Opening JMRI with Install Test does create a fulllaunch report, and within it there are multiple mentions of the culprit jackson-annotations-2.0.6,Jackson-databind-2.0.6, and Jackson-core-2.0.6. Some appear in Class Path andFinal Class Path, and all three appear in the final ExeString and Launch. Iincluded the full report at the end of this e-mail.

?The fix is to remove the three suspect files from thelib directory within the previous installation directory. I am completelybaffled by this instruction. Does that mean I should over-rite 4.8 with theprevious 4.6 or with 4.7.3 and somehow find the lib directory (whatever orwhere-ever that is) and remove those three files? Where can I find instructions?Do I need some kind of editing program to do that? Do I have to become a Javaprogrammer first?

?Any recommendations or other approaches would beappreciated.

Locked Re: WiThrottle for Android

Equivalent for Android? Nope, better.

Engine Driver (a most excellent app with superior support) is what I use. It connects to WiThrottle on JMRI, and as mentioned above, DigiTrains is available as well. I believe DigiTrains uses the WebServer in JMRI.

Does your WiFi interface have an ip address when the computer isn't
connected to the network? Does your computer run dhcp for the phones that
will be trying to connect?

UPDATE: I have done some experimentation and have discovered the following:

WiThrottle works only when my iMac is connected to the internet (using
Ethernet, of course, because the WiFi facility is occupied with creating a
WiFi network for the WiThrottle to use).

Why am I seeing this behaviour? What is the suitable workaround?

Here is my situation: my iMac is located in my Studio at the back of my
house, whereas my layout is in my living room, more than 20 feet away and
my Ethernet does not reach that far. How do I use WiThrottle when I move my
iMac to my living room so it is beside my layout?

You could also try DigiTrains (by Gyori Belazs) which also works on Android and talks to JMRI. I have both DigiTrains and Engine Driver on my phone, so I can use whichever I feel like.

Locked Re: Lightening Storm w/ Digitrax - How to Protect for G Scale

I've seen close lightning strikes (tree outside the building) where the induced voltage in internal-only cabling has been sufficient to destroy (blow the tops off) chips (including opto-isolator chips).

I've seen heavy brass terminals of industrial switchgear melted with a power-line strike.

Opto isolators help, but all bets are off if the strike is too close.

Several years ago we had a power surge due to a nearby lightning strike. It burned up the compressor motor to the heat pump. Didn't damage any Digitrax equipment but fried some chips in C/MR-I. I added whole house surge protection and surge protectors on computers and where power supplies for the MRR plug in but still try to remember to unplug everything when not in use. A few minutes will save s lot of grief.

We fought this problem in industry. As said earlier unequal potential between points will cause problems when lightning strikes. So for your outdoor railroad unplugging between points after use might be your best bet.

Well probably the cheapest solution then is to disconnect the Loconet cable (6 conductor flat wire) at the entry / exit from each of the metal boxes. Easy to do but a pain. That way if there is a surge somewhere it will only locally affect the electronics in an individual box.

I was hoping for some surge network protector like my whole house surge protector for electricity.

Locked Dispatcher, transits and sections. Trying to stop engine using stopping sensors.

I have a Lenz based system using signal mast logic and full occupancy detection using Lenz and LDT kit. I can run dispatcher and autotrains on a simple loop, turnout and signal heads all change and show the correct aspect, so Signal mast logic must be OK, certainly the aspects appear to be correct. I am using basic signal heads/masts. I am only running a single engine so no issue with resistant wheels. I have not set up block lengths, and forward/reverse sensors so that may be the issue. But I thought that I did not need these as dispatcher would detect forward/reverse direction.

I have set up LDT RS-16 to enable station stopping with a push-button and have set the sensor up in the sensor table so that it is inactive/active when I press the pushbutton. I have set the section up so that the forward stop sensor is the system name of this sensor.

When the engine enters the block/section (block name=section name, 1:1 relationship) I activate the sensor using the pushbutton but nothing happens, the engine just runs on. If I don't use the stopping sensor in the section then the autotrain /transit allows an action to pause the engine on section entry.

What am I doing wrong with forward/reverse stopping sensors?

I have also tried to set up an action which uses ON SESOR ACTIVE to pause the train, but I cannot find a way to select the appropriate sensor., What am I missing?

My transits have a minimum of 7 sections (1 block to 1 section) and there is no issue with allocation. It seems that I am just missing something.. I am running 4.6.

Thank for reading this.
