The 308 indicates that when the PR3 sends a programming command, it isn't hearing an acknowledgement back from the decoder. There are two likely causes.

One is that there's a bad connection somewhere between the PR3 and the decoder. It could be a loose wire somewhere, or even something as simple as the loco's wheels not making good contact with the programming track.

The other possibility is that the DC power supply you're using with your PR3 is insufficient for the WOW's programming needs. If you're using a PS12 or PS14, try something in the 16-18VDC range.

I have a WOW 121 in a Kato SD40, and my PR3 with an 18VDC regulated supply reads/writes from/to it with no issues at all.

Maybe Peter is referring to the destination drop down box after selecting Move. If there are no entries with an empty user name, that box will be empty.

It takes extra effort to create a signal mast with no user name.

Problem resolved thank you - though I am not sure what the exact problem was in the end. ?I spoke to the supplier of the USB interface who asked what the address was of the Procab. ?It turned out to be set to the same address as the interface (03) so needed to be changed. ?I don't remember changing it from 03 when I installed the interface two years ago and JMRI has been working since then, but perhaps I did. ?If so, I don't know how it reverted to 03. ?Anyway, i changed it to 04 and opened up another problem: ?clicking on a point in JMRI changed it on screen but not on the layout - but also set in motion one of my trains - as it happens with an address starting with 4. ?Thinking that that might mean the JMRI throttles were working, I tried them - but they were not. ?I changed the Procab adderss to 05 without any effect. ?I swapped the cable between the interface and the SB3 - no change. ?In the end, I reverted to the old method - switch off and reboot. ?Now everything works and my Procab is set to address 04. ?What a dark art this world of electronics is!?

I'm on Win10 and I just right-click on the user name and I get the drop down
with choices like 'move'. So I'm not sure why you would not be getting that.
You already have usernames assigned??

The EB1 will not have any effect on JMRI.

It would assist us greatly if you were to restart JMRI, try to use a JMRI throttle, then go to the Help->System Console Menu item from the main DecoderPro window, click on Copy To Clipboard and paste into a post for us all to see.

Also please observe and report back whether you see any LED activity on the NCE USB and whether any LED remains stuck on.

You are correct - therre is a communications problem between JMRI and the layout; I have bypassed the EB1 and the problem remains. ?I can see nothing wrong with the preferences - indeed if I change any of them I get a red error message. ?I must admit that I don't really understand the other settings so wouldn't know whether or not they are correct but I have not chnged any of them since I last used JMRI. ?Using the cabs, everything wroks correctly so the connections between them and the layout must be correct. ?Regarding connections from the computer, there is a USB cable to the interface; from the interface there is a coiled cable to a splitter that connects to the SB3a and the Procab. ?I have heard that the splitter can cause a problem so I removed it and connected the coiled cable direct to the SB3a - made no difference. ?I use the Powercab as a handset as well as for the programming track and that is plugged into the left port of the UTP panel (which is connected to the SB3a by the supplied cable).
The mystery continues - which is a pity as I was hoping to persuade a couple of friends of the benefits of JMRI and Engine Driver later this week.

How do you have them connected?

Check the JMRI preferences to make sure that they’re still set to the right port, NCE settings, etc.

I am using 4.7.6 but if I try to move a Signal Mast or Head I get no drop down menu (such as I see with sensors or turnouts). Is this just me or is this a general problem?

After numerous email exchanges I was eventually able to get the following system log from George, who was sending other emails to me as well as the ones he sent to the list.

As I am not personally familiar with the PR3 I had pointed him to the JMRI PR3 help page to check his settings and advised him to take this to the jmriusers group, where there is plenty of PR3-specific information, along with the system console log.

On the PR3 have you held down the button until the light winks? That is programming mode and the 306 should go away.

Funny thing, I just tried this on my Mac & it doing the same thing.
My iMac is running OS X 10.11.
I am running JMRI 4.7.6.
I moved this off of my Win 10 machine, it was working fine.
I am hooked to the PR3 via USB.
JMRI recognized it just fine.
JMRI will not talk to the PR3.
306 error when trying to program, cannot select PR3 mode, makes no change.
I am going to try to back date my JMRI to 4.6.
I will keep you informed!

Looking through the post the type of command station is not mentioned. What command stations are you
using? and what is your configuration.

PR3 and programming track
Command Station DSC50,100,240 programming track and PR3

Being that it is a club you guys should have a backup system. Take this time to create a backup system and kill two bird with one stone. Use a window system. The reason is diversity. Digitrax PR3 is a window system device and its Soundloader is windows only program. Loading Soundloader will give you the basic configuration needed to test and operate the PR3. If there's ever a problem in the future you can plug the PR3 to the window system and verify its good, connect it back to the Mac and start your fault isolation knowing that the problem is not in the cable, power supply or PR3.

Frustration has the tendency to make us irrational. It causes us to yell out one four letter word and overlook the operative word "FREE". It happens to all of us. The key is perseverance.

306 means JMRI sent a message to the command station and it did not respond. If the Error initializing Decoder Pro window did not pop up when you started DecoderPro then your com port is good.

Look in Edit, Preference, Connection and see what System manufacture, System connection and command station type JMRI is looking for.

If all is right look in the Defaults and make sure all the radio buttons are selected for Loconet

I've got three questions here:

1. I select an entry from my Roster, and then do a Print / Print Preview
Selection and no print preview occurs. Am I missing a step?

2. Speed table - what a kewl way to set up a decoder. It's taken me a while
to get my 2-nd engine matched to my "Standard" but I've matched the 2-nd
to the std at speed steps 1, 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, and 28. Interesting when
I did a match endpoints I got several differences at the above mentioned
speed steps than when I matched each speed step listed. Would this be
normal? Some times the differences were 3 or 4 values

3. Since my speed matching lasted over several days I saved my roster
settings several times and noticed that on the speed table sheet the check marks
in the check boxes at the bottom of each speed step either didn't get
saved, or didn't get restored. Is this by design or should the check marks
and what they stand for be resorted. I would like ( and sorta excepted) that
they would be restored.
