Locked BUG ? PanelPro: endlessly switching back and forth turnouts

Versions used:
- JAVA: 8 update 191,
- JMRI: 4.14
- Windows 10: Build 1809

Hardware used:
- Command station: Digitrax DCS240.
- Turnout decoders: Digitrax DS64 (Peco selenoid)
- Turnout decoder: Fleischmann 6915 (Fleischman 6154C)

JMRI Settings:
- Factory: Digitrax
- System connection: LocoNet PR3
- Serial port: COM3
- Command station type: DCS240 (Advanced Command Station)

Operating the turnouts with the DT500 and DT500D works perfectly.
When I switch a turnout via JMRI PanelPro, the turnout is endlessly back and forth. The same thing happens with the swing bridge of my Fleischmann turntable.

Likewise, "Read all from the decoder" instead of "Read changes on all sheets¡±?
Because that¡¯s not what it does. It only reads what was _changed_.
I always find this confusing - what has changed, the data on the sheet or has something changed in the decoder that I need to re-read it? (same with the similar message for a sheet).

Locked Re: Decoder Pro problems

So (within the limitations of this text format), we could have (note preamble to each row of buttons):
"For CVs on this pane only: Recover values from decoder/Write changes to decoder/Read all from decoder/Write all to decoder."
"For the entire range of CVs: Recover values from decoder/Write changes to decoder/Read all from decoder/Write all to decoder."
To me these are better messages, they at least reference the decoder, and the direction the data is going, which makes them more intelligible to the non-technical user.

While the messages are slightly longer I believe the readability will increase a lot. Are we really that tight for screen space we can't have slightly larger buttons?

If need be there could have a 'beginners mode' with a pop-up text box that has a verbose explanation with 'proceed' and 'cancel' buttons. Somewhere there could be a tick box marked 'expert mode' to turn off beginners mode pop-ups.

Locked Re: JMRI Not Identifying Locomotives Properly

Hi Thomas,

That's an intresting notion, but as they are user defined values, it means that you can't trust them to remain constant. Someone might be using them, say, as the date of the last maintenance done to the engine, after which DecoderPro would no longer find it when identifying. Pity, because I like the idea. Maybe, just maybe, it would work with an option in the preferences to turn it on (default: off).

Only a small subset of decoders have that feature, and older decoders of the same brand may not work the same..And we never throw out a working decoder, right?
You are asking for a feature that cannot be retrofitted, and that the Decoder makers see no profit in providing.

At the Club ( with hundreds of roster entries) we make use of the Owner data field. If you get duplicate matches, look at the owner.
And if you have more than one copy of a Lok learn how to renumber the thing. (I have about 6 duplicates on that list).

Someone years ago suggested using CV 105 & 106 as extra match fields. Most NMRA decoders have those. (more than have RailCom) Did that fall out?
The user would have to put data in those CVs, but they are right there on the basic sheet. Maybe too easy?

Maybe it is because I only see the digest, Dave, but I'm still lost. I just searched for SwissChris and only found four messages none of which was relevant.
I used to get every message but there was too little of relevance to my situation.
Maybe you could cut and paste what SwissChris said into your reply? It would be interesting to know what it said.

In the computer world, fashions come and fashions go.

In my distant days as a sysadmin, "Top Quoting" (new information above quoted text) was a hanging offence.

Then email clients that Top Quoted replies by default came out. Some organisations then began to insist on Top Quoting (all new information must be above quoted text).

Some email clients used to have a changeable preference for Top or Bottom Quoting. But the ones I use now give you no choice about defaults.

Gmail Web and groups.io also Top Quote (place text entry cursor above quoted text).

Sigh. I've been in the computer game too long (coming up to 49 years this year).

Problem is I made two changes:
1) Added some text below the quote.
2) Moved my signature block (the -- is the original designation for the end of message and beginning of signature) to the end.

I don't know exactly which one fixed the display in groups.io

Sorry Peter and all, I'll avoid both in future so my quotes do not end up concealed.

A very good explanation. Add the term "Tab" as in the index tab you attach to a sheet of paper to make finding it easier.

All this terminology we are using actually comes from the stationery analogy.

Peter,

I quoted the posting from SwissChris below that comment as it is exactly what I was referring to. His analogy was very good.

I suspect that you may be following this topic on the web page:

Unfortunately it hides all quoted parts in a little shaded box with three dots. You have to click on that box to see what has been quoted.

Some email clients also do the same or similar, hiding quoted text behind something like "See more from Dave Heap..."

While it helps for posters who quote the whole topic, it completely obfuscates the message from those of us who quote concisely and correctly.

Scott,

Right, it's really hard to make nice sound packs.

But at the very beginning is a sound source. Did you find one?

Unfortunately the following site is in German only...

A click on the speaker symbol plays the sound.

On is a 4MT 4-6-0 sound, a sound sample is here:

Did you already found these sources?

On the Zimo, usually selecting ¡°nearest similar model¡± will be fine.? Only problem arises if those three CVs do something important for your use of the decoder. Otherwise it won¡¯t be a problem.

Keeping up with every new Zimo release (decoder hardware and new decoder firmware releases covering every piece of hardware) is a challenge.?

If you want to create a new Zimo file, please do so. But do it carefully, look at the modular nature of the other Zimo files, and try very hard to make the new definition for the MX616 fit in with everything else.? I¡¯d expect its possible to do it with a small edit to an existing file to slide the MX616 alongside an existing similar device.??

Other people¡¯s answers cover the ESU and the MRC decoder.?

Subject: [jmriusers] Missing Decoder Listings

?

I just Purchased two new decoders, One a Zimo MX616N and a ESU Lokpilot FX Nano 8 Pin. Neither of these will self identify under JMRI.
The Zimo will identify many different decoders but not the MX616N, If I select one that I think is closest to it and read all CV's It will read almost all, but will leave three CV's?unread.?That questions my choice of decoder. Do I need to create a new definition file?
On the Lokpilot I see the F1 Light Flash, when it is being read,?but then I get a no locomotive present. Reading the documentation just confuses me more.
Can anyone give me some insight?how to programing these decoders.

I am using JMRI Test ver 15-1

Also I have a MRC 1833 Sound Decoder that I was trying to create a Decoder definition file. I am?using JEdit. I used a MRC 1927 File to begin with as it had most of the cv's that I needed. It will let me make changes to the file but will not let me save it.

Not sure to understand exactly what you have done. You should: make a copy of the MRC 1827 xml file in a directory outside the JMRI directory, rename the file name using 1833 instead of 1827, then edit and make your changes. Then in JMRI in the 'Debug' menu, choose 'Import Decoder File' and follow instructions; then again from the 'Debug' menu choose 'Recreate Decoder Index' (this may be redundant with the previous but just to be sure).
This will copy your file in your JMRI personal directory and is will stay there even if you install new versions of JMRI.
When you have finished, it would be good to send us your file so that we can add it to JMRI for good. Also I'll be interested to get a copy of the documentation (scanned) as it is not available on MRC site for this decoder. Thus, if you cannot create the decoder, I could do it for you.

PS: I guess that you restarted from MRC 1827 (not 1927 that do not seem to exist).

after getting all electrical connections completely solid ...(had some temporary connections that weren't consistent) ... all i/o boards work now !?

Even though the occupancy detectors show up correctly on the panel and the output board operates the sm2's and the physical turnouts , the initialization message still shows a CT # of 16? ((1) output board at address 0, (1) input board at address 1, & (1) input board at address 2 ).... will this " incorrect" configuration affect programming such as automation , etc? ?

I configured the node with different combinations of card types (with i/o boards installed & uninstalled) .. shouldn't JMRI identify the card-type CT variable the same as CMRI??? it seems like it's an issue with the configuration calculations since the i/o boards weren't even plugged in ...

I tried the first 14 combinations that goes thru all choices of 3 i/o cards .. & compared to Table 12-3 of the CMRI user's manual Version 3.1b ...see below ..

Thanks Bob
First of all apologies for not clipping the old message parts but hopefully they help to inform new readers, unlike Dave Heap's comment, which leaves it unclear as to what his "very good explanation" applies to.
Bob, you need to read the preambles. The button labels then make sense based on what the Help says.
If nothing else, preambles along these lines would clear up the confusion between the first and second row of identical buttons.
I understand the loyalty of others who have figured this out. I have not raised the matter lightly but new users encounter these buttons quite early on while already on a steep learning curve, so anything to make understanding easier has got to be good.

Locked Re: Roster Images Upside Down

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Our "real (wo)man's cameras" are Olympus OM-D E-M1. Other cameras we have owned are Pentax, Panasonic and Canon. All have display auto-rotate enabled and all store EXIF Orientation information, as do all photos friends with DSLRs have shared with us over the years.

All these images, plus all images taken by iPhones and iPads have displayed perfectly in almost every Mac imaging app we have used with them, including Adobe Photoshop. The only exception was a Microsoft product (Entourage or Outlook) we no longer use. It didn't correctly render images taken with the camera rotated, either our own images or ones sent to us.

We need to stop blaming cameras/iPhones etc. and look into how to code JMRI so it makes use of the worldwide EXIF Orientation tag standard.

I have raised an issue:

Locked Re: Missing Decoder Listings

Support for the The ESU LokPilot Fx Nano is in JMRI V4.15.1 (and probably quite a bit earlier). It's under LokPilot Standard V1.0.

The LokPilot Fx series are function-only decoders and don't have a motor to pulse on to provide communication back to the programmer.

I don't have an Fx Nano but I connected my Fx V4.0 to my ESU tester (which connects a motor and all function outputs to the 8 pin socket) and JMRI was able to identify it fine.

If you restart JMRI, open the Help->System Console menu item and press New Loco-Read Type from Decoder, what appears in the system console (use Copy to Clipboard and post it for us)? It will tell us whether it was a failure to respond or a failure to identify (in which case the log has valuable identification information I need to know).

Yes, that's a good setup.
I don't think you'll overload anything (other than the track bus), but If you want to distribute the load more, you could have a locobuffer-usb on each RaspberryPi, and take a bit more off of the central machine.
