Irvin,

When you print your manifest from the preview text editor, you are using the editor to print your manifest and not the program.? Your issue is related to JMRI trying to print your manifest.? I need you to check the system console for messages when printing from JMRI.? It may reveal why you can't print.? Also, if you deselect the option to use the text editor for previewing a manifest, does the preview provided by JMRI look ok?

Irvin, I tried to duplicate your problem but cannot.? I did not find that the option to use a text editor made any difference to printing.

I know that JMRI 4.14 is really not that old, but so many changes have been made is so many areas that printing could have been affected.? I am running 4.19.2 so I may not be able to reproduce the issue that you have.? I looked at the release notes for 4.16 and 4.18 but could not find any reference to a change that would affect printing.?

I don't know what collateral damage may occur (panels or scripts may be affected and are the biggest concern) from my next suggestion, so consider it carefully: upgrade to a newer production release (4.18 for example).? I know Dan (who works on the Operations stuff) has regularly updated the program, and modified how things work, to accomodate new options and requests (and to fix bugs!).?

It is still a possibility however that Windows is fooling us somehow.

Hey Dennis,
I think this is kinda like the 15 year old getting his drivers license and then thinking they can run top fuel dragsters. Makes me think "Well Okay Then"

PJ,

Your friend could be facing a LocoNet "switch message storm" as described at .

It is most likely on LocoNet-based systems where signaling is via LocoNet. The problem can be exacerbated by having more than one JMRI computer on LocoNet if a certain work-around has not been applied.

The problem is most-easily diagnosed by having JMRI's LocoNet Monitor open during an operating session, with "timestamping" enabled. When the lock-up occurs, look at the LocoNet Monitor window and look for a "storm" of repeated switch messages, where each message gets a command station reply that rejects the switch message.

The web page describes the problem in detail and includes a wide variety of work-arounds.

The DCC System is Digitrax. Mine at home is also Digitrax. I will not be able to get to him about the sleep mode for a couple days. I can say that the sleep mode is turned off on my computer.

Dan?
So the program does or doesn't tell you to pick up helpers?
Matt Greenwood

Locked Re: pickup and setout of locos in route #operationspro

The helpers are just a note on the train's manifest.? The program doesn't move them in the database, so the return is up to you, but the expectation by the program is that the helpers return to their starting location.

Further to the "how to ask your question" item - I can think of one DCC-system-specific situation which might be in play. But the OP has not (so far as I have noticed) defined which DCC system is in use, so I am not going to speculate and further muddy the waters!

Locked Re: New JMRI Version breaks my panels #4-18

Yes, that is correct.? The 23_2 version is the one where I needed to edit the XML file to change LS0 to LS930 because the new version of JMRI did not like the LS0 designation.? That is the latest version of my panel file.

If the problem is not ports sleeping, or computer sleeping, then more information is needed as Billybob pointed out.? I remember that scripts have been an issue when "stalling" because an endless loop keeps the computer busy.? If there are scripts running on that computer, that might be an important piece of information for troubleshooting.

Hi Matt,

I believe if you want to get the helpers back down the hill you'll need to create a route and a train to build.? Give that a try.

Hi Matt,

That's one of the great things about JMRI.? You can pick and choose the functions you want and can ignore the others.? I've given clinics on using JMRI operations at NMRA regional and national conventions and wrote an article?published in Model Railroad Hobbyist and the Op SIG journal, so the information is out there.? I think at some point I should update those articles since there has been a great deal of improvements since then.

Thanks Dennis,
I didn't realize the DS and Clerk were in two different locales around here we don't have the luxury of having that many operators. If we can get the feature without it being mandatory for operations it sounds like a good idea. One of the problems I run into when teaching someone new is trying to get them to start simple then go for the neat stuff after they learn the basics. The most of the calls I get is from newbies wanting to run schedules, alt. tracks and some of the other things that are great about this program when they have never even built a single train. The biggest thing we as experienced operators with JMRI is to teach the newbies is the KISS method and help them to get up and running before taking them off the deep end of the pool. I think it would be great if we had weekly or so online training course to help newbies learn the program from simple data entry to the complex componets in scheduling and other ideas. I have been fooling around with JMRI for 10 years or so and still am learning new things all the time. I for one would welcome beginer and advanced seminars on JMRI at conventions and train shows. Here in Nebraska we are scattered all over the place and far apart we learn online but sometimes we just have to go hands on in person.

Hi LD,

Add an Internal Sensor ( to Sensor Table + Panel )

Edit the existing Light and add a "One Sensor Light Control", see

You can then use the Sensor to operate the Light.

Bob,

Sorry to have to ask another newbie question, but you stated in your reply:

You can also iterate through the list of running automats, etc.
I can't see any method to achieve this on the page you referenced, nor can I find an example anywhere.? Would you be so kind as to provide an example of how to iterate through the list of threads displayed in the thread monitor?

Trevor.

Not assessing if the USB port going to sleep is the issue here, however, you can change a setting in Windows to make the USB ports not go to sleep at all. ?That would cure/remedy the ¡®going to sleep¡¯ issue.

At least on Win 7 you can¡

PJ,

You have not given us anything to work with, but one common issue is that Windows will disconnect the serial ports if it goes to sleep. JMRI does not know how to get them going again when Windows wakes up again. The answer is simple. Don't do that. I.e. don't let Windows shut down when there is no activity, or at least set the time before snoozing to a long time with no activity.

PJ,

Please also elaborate as much as you can on what you mean when you say 'stalling'. Is it slowing down? If so: WHAT is slowing down? Is it stopping completely? If so: is that sudden or is response (in controlling a train or maybe a panel) getting progressively slower before grinding to a halt?

We must seem a collection of pedants, but, really, getting to grips means getting as clear an idea on what goes on as you can possibly give.

PJ, I'm afraid that the description and details are too vague to get a specific answer.? I suspect that troubleshooting will have to involve changing things on that computer such as scripts or panels that are run from the start.??

For example, I suspect that "runaway" scripts with endless loops are the most common issue of a working JMRI that seems to be "stalling" but really, is just too busy to take input from you.? Really bad endless loops can overflow the memory on the computer and actually lock up the computer too.? I have not seen Logix cause that issue, but I have not seen it all, and am not an expert in that.
