" Remote copy of JMRI

JMRI provides some excellent tools for "sharing" a physical connection to your layout. ?One of these is the??LoconetOverTCP server (Digitrax-only). ?To use this, connect a separate computer to the RPi-JMRI wifi network. ?Start JMRI, and in Connections, specify Digitrax, LocoNetOverTCP LbServer. ?Enter the RPI's address "192.168.6.1", Save and restart. ?When JMRI comes up, you will be running a full copy of JMRI, with full-screen access to decoder programming, panels, etc.

For non-Digitrax layouts, follow the above steps, but specify JMRI Simple Server (Note: this server has some limitations)."

I think you misunderstand the Raspberry Pi option. Steve Todd has put a lot of work into it, and it pretty much works as you describe: It¡¯s a box that you just turn on. It comes up in a few seconds without an further attention.

Although if you have to reconnect USB each time, perhaps there¡¯s something else going on. Why do you do that?

IMHO JMRI breaks the entire document metaphor used by almost every app I¡¯ve ever seen.
If I edit a layout/panel, etc. then shouldn¡¯t it be marked ¡°dirty¡±?
And then if/when I quit the app should it then ask me if I want to save it?

There is no install script (or specific installation location) under Linux or macOS.

Allowing even an experienced user to pick and choose what to install/update/remove would almost certainly lead to a malfunctioning/nonfunctional JMRI installation (and a support nightmare).

With Linux or macOS you must do a non-merging folder replacement.

The Windows Install script takes care of merging into an existing installation folder. It has to be manually coded to remove obsolete files, a step the developer has sometimes missed and caused problems.

Under no circumstances should any user add or modify files in the program folder and expect the additions/modifications to be still there after a version upgrade.

If so then let the user decide what they want to install in the installation script by giving them two initial choices when the install script first runs: Default install (Basic Full installation default location) or Advanced Install (User decides what files are needed and where to install)? The website could provide a list of changed files so an experienced user could only install whats needed.

Locked Re: Is computer the only option to operate JMRI web server?

Paul D,

With any of the computer options (win/mac/pi) you can have AutoStart for
everything. So you don't have to do more than flip the switch. It helps a
lot if you have a button to shutdown cleanly rather than just power off when
done. Having a computer configured so it will do the logon by itself, then
launch JMRI, and JMRI startup doing the other steps is easy. For reference,
that is exactly what the Steve's preconfigured Pi system does.

The one thing I think would help many would be a board for the Pi that had a
couple of super caps and the hardware so the Pi could see the power from the
wallwart go away and have enough energy to cleanly shut itself down. I don't
know of anybody who has packaged that up for users. I've heard of some
putting such parts together for themselves.

Paul,
I keep my JMRI RaspberryPi in my electronics box, attached to the main power strip along with the command station and 12v supply for lights, etc. I turn on main power, everything boots up. In maybe one minute, my panel is available to access from my pads, phones, whatever. Same at our modular club, the RaspberryPi is attached to our electronics tower and comes up with main power. Club members don't even need to know its there.

Tis the season for giving, all year long we JMRI enthusiasts have been
receiving, I just dropped $25US on to the donation plate, that works out today
to $35.09CDN.

Come on now JMRI users, if you can squeeze a $250 loco into your train budget,
you can go without a Starbucks coffee for two days to make a donation.

Thanks, Greg, for the reminder. I suggest everybody who uses JMRI during the
year drop $10 into the plate, as I just did. Almost painless for a wonderful
addition to our toolbox.

Hi Paul,

The terminology has gone this way and that over the years, and there is simply nothing that suits all. It is what it is, and there is no other option than to get used to how JMRI works. Don't forget that every attempt to change the words used confuse the heck out of existing users. Personally, I'd fight another cchange tooth and nail, unless it were a change in the actual data model that would better match with how people are used to thinking because of other software. But in all honesty, I hope that never happens either.

No other alternatives to a computer of some sort. ???
You could get a small low powered computer to run the webserver, rather than your regular device.? Whether that¡¯s a PI (quite easy to setup with Steve Todd¡¯s download for JMRI), or a small PC running Windows, Macos or whatever you prefer.?? There are small low powered cheap PCs available, but I think the setup hassle may be higher than the PI.?

?

Sprog is irrelevant to this situation, it doesn¡¯t offer any gains for the stated problem.

I currently have a computer with JMRI that I use whenever I operate my Digitrax layout.? Main reason is to run JMRI web? server so I can see panels on my iPad which I use as my walk around control panel.? I have? no experience with some of the other control devices such as the Pi, SPROG and any of the other device's that seems to be popular. If I want to continue to see my panels via JMRI web server, do I have any other options that would let me operate without a computer when running trains?

Locked Re: Using Dapol semaphore signals signalist sc1 and dp8

The new Peco servo kit is a very expensive solution, a better route for servo operation of signals and turnouts is the megapoints system. Megapoints have a direct pc interface in development so it can be controlled by JMRI as well as an old school panel.

Locked Re: Layout Editor, Simple LED

Well, keep this in mind: the icons you use for an object do not have to
match the object. So using say large lamps, but tying them to a turnout (by
replacing the icons) is fine.

As for creating a Light or Turnout, that is more choice and what is the
hardware. If you are watching a turnout or operating it from the panel, then
you want that to be a turnout object (even if it isn't using turnout icons).

Given what I remember about what you are trying to do, Lights would just be
a confusion, stick with Turnouts.

Thanks Ken and Paul. You are being really halpful. I can see that what you are suggesting is exactly what I want to make my ipad operated layout as easy to read and operate as possible.

I have added a light but am not sure how to add it to the Layout.
From the main PanelPro page I have:
Tools
Tables
Lights
Add
Hardware address (1)
Add control
By turnout status, control turnout NT500, Status for on (thrown)
Now I have a light called NL1
close page and open my Layout.

My problem is now I dno't know how to add it to the layout. I have looked everywher I can think of.
