Bob, The big problem right now is that I DO NOT get the warnings when I load your panel. The main difference is that I have a new profile to setup the test. After you start JMR and get the warnings, go to Help >> System Console, click on Copy to clipboard and paste the results in a reply. After you have done that, I will have another request which will depend on the system console content. ?I hope to re-create your environment as closely as possible. New Decoder definition file
Hello,
I recently purchased a ScaleTrains Operator locomotive with the ESU Essential Sound Decoder in it.? Unfortunately, the version of JMRI I was running did not include this decoder definition.? I upgraded to the latest version and got the decoder definition in DecoderPro.? Great!? Well not really.? The upgraded version of JMRI broke my panel.? I'm tempted to restore the backup of JMRI so that my panel works again.? But if I do that, is there a way to get the new decoder definition into it? Thanks, Bob Z |

Thanks Cliff
I uploaded the revised panel.? And if I am correct, the only changes as you suggest were done to the XML file was?to the URL pointers.? For example: url="program:resources/icons/_RJE/Signals/SearchErrorFlash.gif" gets changed to: url="preference:resources/icons/Signals/SearchErrorFlash.gif" Am I correct?? If so, how did you do that?? I assume it was something other than manually adjusting the XML coding. You also moved the icon files to the user resource folder (?) I opened your file with your configuration (have never tried the loconet simulator before so it took a second to get oriented.? I tried to place a edit the "X" signalhead with no luck, and also tried to place a new signalhead, and it again only placed an "X" no matter which iconset was selected. I've placed a screenshot file at: /g/jmriusers/files/ProblemsBeingWorkedOn/RJE/200207%20-%20Screen%20Shot%20-%20Panel%20Editor%20-%20Coombe%20Junction.zip To show what I am seeing in case it might be different than what you see.? Note the "X" on the UPPER BRIDGEBURY part of the panel.? This is a signal head icon, placed using ADD ITEMS, that I can't change to a working icon set. In answer to your questions:

Are they slower than expected?- YES Are they slower than another loco?- YES Are they slower than another identical loco?- YES, To be accurate the decoders in question are slower than identical decoders in identical or similar locos, with the same JMRI Speed Control settings. Are they slower than a loco with a different decoder/motor/gear train ... ?- YES EXAMPLE: Digitrax DN166I1C Decoder (Intermountain F3 & F7). A-B-A set of "Black Widow F7s"- F7A, F7B, F7A runs at acceptable speed. Digitrax DN166I2 Decoder (Intermountain FP7)& DN166I1C Decoder (Intermountain F3 & F7) A-B-A set of "Black Widow F7s"- F7PA, F7B, F7PA runs slower at unacceptable speed EXAMPLE: Broadway Limited E6s A-A Paragon (UP & ATSF) both these Paragon sets run at similar (slower speeds) than Broadway Limited PA1s, PA2s (Paragon) and E8s (Paragon 2). I realize this is a moving target with probably too many variables to determine exactly the cause of the slower running. In the case of the Broadway Limited E6s A-A Paragon (UP & ATSF) These drive trains are the same and act the same. Probably mechanisms, rather than decoder. In the case of the Digitrax F7s & FP7s These drive trains are the same but act differently. Maybe mechanisms. I've had luck disassembling Intermountain F units and cleaning the factory installed grease out of the drive gears, which raises speed. I'm going to do this with these Intermountain units to see if it solves the slow running. In the case of the Broadway Limited units, I'm not sure of a solution. This may just we the way these older Paragon units were made. Regards, Robert Diepenbrock On 2/7/20 9:20 AM, Alan Pearce via Groups.Io wrote:

If dispatcher is running the trains, it will (attempt) to obey signals. If it's not Dispatcher, then jmri can only set the signals to stop, but not force anything to stop at them. On Fri, Feb 7, 2020 at 7:28 PM Phil Law <tlcphil@...> wrote:

Bob, A test config profile built from your original upload is now located at /g/jmriusers/files/ProblemsBeingWorkedOn/RJE/Bob_England_CA1.jmri.zip The folder has been stripped down to as close to minimal as I can safely execute using the LocoNet Simulator, but with the exception that a log subfolder is included with the zipped folder. The log of my most recent execution is there, just in case you are curious. Other than the heavy handed moving the resources folder structure, only the renamed "BOBsControlPanel 10r CA1.xml" file has been edited. Even so, I have attempted to ONLY edit the url descriptions to point to your icons. Perhaps I should have worked with the "Test01.xml" file instead? In case you are not familiar with the "Add Existing..." option provided with config profile usage, try what is documented at but you may still be in unfamiliar territory. That document is a little sketchy about the features you will need. It should be noted, that my style of using the config profiles evolved when the concept of profiles was still being developed and there is likely to be lots of different opinions as to what I should have done better in the uploaded config profile. As outlined in the files/ProblemsBeingWorkedOn/RJE/ description several questions now remain before progress can be made:
When you can confirm that I finally have a clean working copy of what you see on your computer, then I will also need further information. It is now abundantly clear that my attempts to duplicate your symptoms was done while working with a very simple panel that only had about ten blocks and maybe twenty signals. The fact that you have developed a very complex set of panels and only recently experienced a problem casts a completely different perspective on this discussion. Cliff in Baja SoCal |

Two trains on Main line

I am a new user of JMRI running 4.1 with a Digitrax DSC51 , SE8, two - four train detector, and a laptop running windows 10. I am trying to create blocking to prevent two trains from running into each other. Being a test track I have not created the graphic control panel, planning to do that later. Plus I have not been able to accomplish creating the background of the control panel. I have managed to create block, sensor, portal and transit tables. The trains will change the block colours as they travel around the loop. However they continue to run into each other. I have open a script the allowed me to open the Operation and Dispatcher panels not sure if was the right one or not. I would appreciate any assistance?you can provide. Phi |

Re: Panel Editor - Signal Heads not able to be Dragged and Dropped from Palette

Bob, I don't have any insight yet into the signal head issues. ?However, I recommend that custom components reside within the "user files location". This help page has a complete explanation of JMRI file structures: As indicated in the help page, the keyword for the user files location is "preference:". ?If you look at your xml files, you will see that you currently have your custom icons at "program:resources/icons/_RJE...". Since your zip file included the Wilbury_Spa profile, I am able to determine your some of your configuration. The profile.properties file has lots of information including some of the file location definitions:
The jython location is a default value, the user files location was set using "Preferences >> File Locations" and the roster location was set using Preferences >> Roster. ?I also set jython to be part of the user files location.? It appears that the custom icons are currently in their own J location. ?To facilitate automatic JMRI overrides they need to move to resources/icons within the user files J location. When you build image indexes you have a choice of Program Directory or Preferences Directory. ?Things selected from the program directory get the "program:" key while things selected from the preferences directory get the "preference:" key. The similar process works for icon sets. While migration is a one time event, it is a lot of work.
Make sure you have good backups. I stored the files in the zip file under the same folder/sub-folders as they are under on my J: drive (where I keep copies of all my user modified files).? These same files are in the JMRI program directory on C:\Program Files (x86)\JMRI and in the C:\Uers\RJE\JMRI folder (note this is a Windows7 machine) ¨C all in the same folders.? I keep all altered files on my J: drive so I can back them up easily.? The scripts I have are to monitor the power setting and push its status into a sensor, to listen to my PM42 inputs, and to set my turnouts ¡°CLOSED¡± at start-up.? These are basically slight modifications to the canned scripts that come with JMRI.? The fourth script was my first attempt at writing my own script from scratch, and is intended to provide an interface between JMRI and a Walthers turntable I have ¨C it does not work properly.? I can send you copies of the script files if you think it would be helpful. ? All 4 Panel Editor files and the Layout Editor file automatically load when the program fires up; I don¡¯t have to load any manually.? I could not tell you which order they load in as JMRI loads the files.? I don¡¯t think it matters, as I created a new layout called ¡°TEST¡± and created a panel in it, and it exhibits the same difficulties as ¡°WILBURY SPA¡±. ? Sorry, I misunderstood your thought on ¡°copying mechanism¡±; I read ¡°coping¡± mechanism and thought it to be a special work-around process.? Yes, I do the copying mechanism thing you mention for all my user files, putting them in the three places noted above.? You mention that ¡°it is much safer to provide the start-up and file default portions of the Config Profile to consistently point to your locally modified files¡± ¨C do I do this by changing the default search location under ¡°Configuration¡± tab of ¡°Preferences¡±?? I tried this last night but it changed nothing, but I left the original JMRI program file folder on the list (with the box un-ticked). ? I hope this helps.? ? I¡¯d be interested in your thought on the error message I get when trying to change one of the bad signals to a different icon set: ? ¡°2020-02-05 19:09:54,619 ptionhandler.UncaughtExceptionHandler ERROR - Uncaught Exception caught by jmri.util.exceptionhandler.UncaughtExceptionHandler [AWT-EventQueue-0] ? I can¡¯t help but thinking this might point us in the right direction. ? Thanks for looking at this for me Cliff ! ? BobE ? From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Cliff Anderson ? Bob, There is now a copy of your zip file on my computer, but I am having some difficulties unraveling how the files fit together. It appears from your file named "200206 - RJE - JMRI Files for Debugging\200206 - RJE - JMRI Files for Debugging\DRIVE J\RJE User Files\Wilbury_Spa\profile\profile.xml" that you execute several scripts during the startup process, but evidently load one or more of your panels manually after the startup process has completed. Or maybe one or more of those scripts load panel files. Please explain what is wrong with my summary. For the forensics activities, it is important for me to understand which panel file should be loaded or if multiple panel files are loaded, which order do you follow.
It is not likely that your signal icons problems are due to what you describe here, but the process does seem to allow for some ambiguity as to which of your versions might get left out or overwritten. Extra caution would be in order here.
There are numerous message threads on this groups messages record, but essentially the writers describe some kind of method for copying the folders with locally modified resources back into the "program:" folder. Some do it manually and some have developed elaborate batch or script files. It may take extra effort, but it is much safer to provide the startup and file default portions of the Config Profile to consistently point to your locally modified files.
It is entirely likely that we are looking at a symptom that is being caused by several small errors, rather than some big problem. Cliff |

Scott, What version of Windows are you using?? It should not matter (because designer does not use JMRI), but what version of JMRI are you using? designer needs only 2 libraries outside of the standard Java libraries - jdom and log4j.? It appears that Java is not finding the jdom libraries, which exist because JMRI runs.? I have seen this a few times and don't know the cause.? On a Windows 7 Pro system, I got around the problem by creating a folder and added the designer .jar, .bat, and a sub-folder, named lib, containing the jdom and log4j .jar files from the JMRI lib folder.? I eventually expanded the jdom file by renaming it .zip and extracted the contents (via a right click and extract).? That worked.? I don't know the root cause, but I suspect it had something to do with the Windows settings on the files or folders - perhaps permissions. The .bat file that you posted tries to run designer twice - once by invoking Java directly and the second by going through the JMRI launcher, using designer.jar as the main file.? Since JMRI runs, the latter should also run, except it may not get the chance because the first failed.? Be sure you have commented out the first with the ::. Rodney |
