Locked "OutOfMemoryError" while trying to load PanelPro file - Help!

I can't load my panel file. ?When I ?choose the panel file to load nothing more happens, PanelPro is locked up and I have to force quit the application. Problem began this morning. ?Have been working in PanelPro for the last several weeks with no problems. Sometimes I get this message:?

2018-07-24 12:42:47,299 configurexml.ErrorHandler ? ? ? ? ? ? ERROR - Unexpected error (Throwable) while in load(/Users/nickbrownsberger/Documents/TRAINS/My_JMRI_Railroad/Layout%20Panel%20v397%20speeds.xml) in adaptor of type jmri.jmrix.internal.configurexml.InternalTurnoutManagerXml Exception: java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: GC overhead limit exceeded

The memory log and my latest Panel file will shortly be in ProblemsBeingWorkedOn>Nick Brownsberger.

PanelPro version 4.12+Rb6a9bb1 starts under Java 1.8.0_171 on Mac OS X x86_64 v10.11.6

I've tried rebooting my IMac, going back to JMRI version 4.11.8 from 4.12, loading panel files I saved from two weeks ago that don't have any of my recent changes and additions, all to no avail.

Need some help! Please.

Nick

Locked Re: Newbie control panel file question

Dave, thank you for your help! I was able to find and save a couple of panels. But, I'm still having problems. Even when I've just created a panel and saved it, if I open it, I get messages that there are errors. I'm on a Windows 8.1 machine with PanelPro 4.1 and Java 1.8.0_171.

I can't seem to place any symbols. I started with a right hand turnout. Selected closed position. At no time did the place button darken, it is grayed out. Not sure whether I need to enter something in the identifier fields for system and layout(?) But, I'm getting the error messages even with a brand new panel. So, what's causing the error messages? Could it be that the editor will only work on the computer that's connected to the railroad? I had hoped to do the panel layouts and such on my best machine, then copy then them to the one controlling the layout. Maybe it's giving errors because the defined EasyDCC connection isn't there on this machine?

I was able to place a couple of turnout symbols last week, before I sent my first message. But, I never could open the panel to view them, as I got the same error message over and over.

Is there an explanation somewhere of the basics for getting started; requirements and an initial process flow? I'm becoming very discouraged, tempted to just go back to writing my own...

I don't believe those concepts exist on the Proto Throttle either.? Looking at their manual, notching is handled by assigning a speed step to each notch on the throttle.? Idle is speed step 0.? Notch 1 could be speed step 4, notch 2 assigned to speed step 8, and so on.? They recommend setting CV3 and CV4 to fairly high values to simulate momentum of starting and coasting when idling.? One of the images in the Protothrottle manual shows the brake lever assigned to F10.? If I remember correctly F10 is where Loksound assign's the brake.? I think it reduces the amount of momentum programmed into CV4.??

My question is whether or not the protothrottle has memory of locomotive settings that have been set up to operate with it such as the speed step/notching assignments???

Rodney,
Thank you for your direct reply and please pardon what appears to be my impatience. I have tried three times to join the CATS users group in the past with no results or replys. I am not blaming that on you. Perhaps as with all things computer those requests went off in another direction unbeknownst to me or you.? I was planning on going out to KC to attend your clinics, and perhaps meet you, but alas family issues got in the way.
I re-applied to join the CATS Yahoo group yesterday hoping for better results. In the mean time I will look at your suggestions and perhaps achieve an answer to my problem. I do have a screen that comes up when opening designer that shows code with an error. I have taken a screen shot of it. What would be the best way to pass it along for review ?
I appreciate the long hours that go into creating a program such as CATS. Thanks for your efforts.
I look forward to successfully getting it up and running on my railroad
Respectfully,
Jeff Zeleny

The E-mails in which I saw your request to join the CATS-users group and to the web site were both time stamped June 23 - the same as when you posted to the JMRI user group (see below).? Furthermore, CATS is by far not my full time job (I make nothing off of it) and I have been traveling since last Wednesday with limited E-mail access.

1. This sounds like you installed on a version of Windows - 7, 8. or 10.? It also sounds like the Windows security scheme is blocking you from writing into the folder where you installed designer.? The simple solution is save your file somewhere else - say in My Documents or a sub-folder within.? A solution that reduces the file structure navigation every time that you want to access CATS files would be to re-install CATS differently.? I don't know why you are getting file blocking issues.? It could be the user account you used when installing CATS.?? I could be by noy checking the "allow all users" box in installing CATS.? It could be where you installed CATS.? It could be the permissions on the folder you installed CATS in (or the folder's parent folder, etc.).? I have seen such a problem on another system and since we were in a hurry, we installed JMRI at C:, rather than C:\Program Files

2. As is periodically mentioned in this group, attachments can be dangerous and are stripped, so we don't know what you are seeing.

Hello Peter:

Regarding question 1,? when the throttle goes to idle it is the same as issuing a speed step 0 command and the momentum functionality takes over.

When the brake level is applied, the value in CV61 is used to accelerate the end of the momentum feature.?? For Soundtraxx Tsunami decoders there are multiple CVs that work in conjunction to simulate braking:
????? CV4 - Baseline braking rate?? (emulating momentum of the moving mass of a train when the throttle is at idle)
????? CV61 - F11 Braking rate when the F11 button is pressed. The throttle is set to 0, forcing the decoder to decelerate to a stop eventually.? This value is a subtraction or addition offset to CV4 depending on the sign of the value is CV61.

Econami decoders use CV4 and CV117? (see excellent article at .?? For whatever reason Econami and Tsunami use different CVs for the F11 brake rate offset.?? Go figure.

I hope I got this right, my apologies in advance if something is amiss.?? I did do my research.

I believe this thread is using the PT to mean ProtoThrottle. But nobody has
confirmed that's what they were meaning.

This is similar to a challenge that I laid down in the old Yahoo group, shortly before the transition. Basically I asked for a skin to engineDriver that replicated the PT. I have used the actual PT on a friend's layout and it does make switching very realistic, and fun. And yes, there are many, mainly older, decoders that do not work with PT. But I am sure that will not deter people from wanting a PT. A bigger deterrent is the price, which is where an ED skin would come in. I imagine that this would not be a priority forthe core development and support team, perhaps someone with the necessary time and skills could create one. Maybe even as a <gasp> paid upgrade, after all WiThrottle in IOS is not completely free.....

I tried running this script, it creates a file descriptor in Windows 7 but if you attempt to open it you get a message that the file is locked for editing.?? Bypassing this message and forcing open the file shows the file to be empty.

Looking at the file details in Explorer shows a size of 0 kb

Locked Operations: Flipping E/L at end of train, without using staging yard

I have started playing around with Operations, and have managed to set up most of what I need, including: switching from a local yard to a mine and sending only empty cars, creating phantom trains to move from the end points of the layout to storage shelves (using the 0-5-0 loco). I also have schedules at spurs, including my RIP tracks, so I am not a complete beginner.?
However, I have run into one issue that I have been bending my head around and scanning the groups.io messages but have not found a solution.

Situation: Point to point layout with three interchange points, one at each end and one in the middle. The i/c yards are used in two ways, firstly to collect cars to/from the layout spurs for transferring from/to storage, secondly (more importantly) as a turnaround point for cars. Specific example of the second item is as follows, empty cars start in the i/c yard and are moved to a mine yard. A local switching train moved the cars to the mine where their load is flipped to L. A second switching train then moves them back to the mine yard, ready for pickup. Keeping it simple, assume all cars will return loaded to the original i/c yard. On reaching the i/c yard, I would like the load to be flipped from L back to E.

From the documentation I see a number of ways to do this, I would appreciate comments from some of the experienced Ops users as to the pitfalls or benefits of the different approaches.
  1. Define the end points as staging - Don't really want to use this as it creates fixed trains and I would like to Build new trains going out again (if the cars are not sent to storage)
  2. Define the endpoint tracks (4, 4 & 2) as spurs, as well as the storage shelves (currently yards). A loaded car coming in will become E, if it goes to storage it becomes L and when it is selected from storage again it will revert to E. Seems to accomplish what I need, but any pitfalls with using spurs instead of yards (plain or i/c). The flipping would apply to all cars but that is acceptable.
  3. Use scripting to set cars to E, perhaps irrespective of current status, before building the train leaving the end point. Probably best if a car sub-type is defined for mine use only, correct?
Any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance for any help that anyone can give

Locked Comsist Throttle Problems with F Functions

I am having issues with non responsibe function buttons in consists. Both my JMRI and Engine driver throttles have non functioning Function buttons. I am able to control the speed and direction of the consists but that is all. I use the consist manager in both advanced and command station mode but get the same results. I have reset the decoders with no avail.?
When I use my dt 500 or the protothrottle I have full function of my buttons.? Also if i build the consist in engine driver I have no problems. This only affects the JMRI and engine driver throttles.
I am on JMRI 4.12 with a dcs 240 connected via USB (PR3) to a raspberry pi. All my connections are confirmed as loconet.?

Thanks, Harold, glad you got it sorted.
I was aware of that Preference, but did not think to ask you to check it. Sorry about that.
I tested with a new profile, and learned that the default is now "Disable Frames". I'll remember that for next time this sort of issue arises.

Many thanks Steve.

The problem is resolved.? Although I do not fully understand many of the options available in JMRI and Engine Driver, I discovered that, in JMRI Preferences on the laptop under Web Server/Frame Server, frames were disabled.? Sincce you advised to state "/frames" in Engine Driver Initial Web Page, it occurred that perhaps frames should be enabled.? Having done that and restarted Engine Driver, I then saw the Available JMRI Frames page and was able to select my full panel.? This brought up a clear image of everything and i have been able to change turnouts using the tablet's touch screen.

?Great to have everything working properly again - and I do like the new version of Engine Driver.

Thanks again,
Harold.
