Having a clone is a good secondary backup, but since Randy wrote that article in 2018, macOS has shifted to sealed startup volumes that cannot directly be cloned. The only way to make a clone today is to install macOS on an external drive first and then using a tool like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper to copy all your data to the Data volume.
