Re: [IC-7000] Re: Grounding plus newbie questions.

Charles Scott

All:

This is, as someone else mentioned, a very bad idea. The ends of unterminated cables are high impedance node, which means high voltage. For a couple of reasons, the voltage at that point can be many times the voltage getting coming into your house from the strike.

The bigger issue here is the state of knowledge in the Ham community about grounding and lightning protection. The comments here reinforce that concern (sorry), and often suggestions passed from Ham to Ham can be down-right dangerous.

Of the practical methodologies for lightning protection for Hams, there's primarily two approaches. One is to disconnect EVERYTHING that comes into your house from your antennas, including any ground conductors, and throw them outside and well away from the house. But of course you need to do this well in advance of any potential lightning event. The second is to learn about and implement a "Single Point Ground" and methods to minimize the energy entering the house on ALL conductors, including any ground conductors. If you're not familiar with Single Point Grounds, don't assume you know what it means, look it up. There are other approaches, but they get progressively more difficult to implement.

Also, the "blitz bug", more commonly called "lightning arresters", in most cases do not protect you or most of your radios and associated equipment, they only protect your radios from lightning and other impulse energy from coming in on the inside of your transmission line.

So-called "RF grounds" are another discussion, but safety first.

This issue is connected with a Remote Base operation. Unfortunately, the 7000 can't be turned on and off via a CI-V command (that I know of), such as can many other radios. ?We'v had the remote (7000) rig get stuck in transmit, a couple of times, with a full-power carrier, and the fellow at whose home this remote setup resides had to go home from work (twice in one day) to turn the rig off manually. ?Of course I realize that the power cable could be interrupted by the use of an IP Web Relay, but was just curious if the above statement makes that kind of plan a little easier to implement... such as being able to shoot some kind of command to the CI-V and control the power relay. Re: Icom 7000

I have had a number of issues with computer programming of rigs, the IC-7000 being one of them. Usually the handshaking problem was related to using the wrong com port, if you are using a USB to Serial adapter. I found a program that checks your adapter to determine which com port it likes.

?

?

The link to the program itself is located near the bottom of the article which is very helpful as well.

Set the radio baud rate to 19200 using the radio's menus (check the manual).? I had no luck with the auto baud setting, but once fixed at 19200, all software works perfectly.

I have been able to track the lack of TX down to the 1st IF?
my thoughts it may be the processor, the rig is quite happy on am fm Rtty

Assuming you installed the USB drivers *before* you plugged in the cable the first time, it should work as long as the com port and speed are am set correctly.?

The radio defaults to auto-negotiate on the com speed, which is from whatever, up to 19,200 baud. IIRC, the software defaults to 38,400 baud.?
Setting the software to 19,200 and leaving the radio set to default should work.?

Check device manager to see what com port windows has assigned to the cable and set the software to the same and you should be good to go.?

Remote control of power (voltage)

While looking around the net for something about how to remotely switch the 7000's power on and off, I found this in a forum, from some time back:

"if you not use OUT-0 for example you can use it to control a relay. The relay can then switch on/off the main pwr to the IC-7000"

Does anyone have any idea what this refers to?? ?I thought it might have something to do with the 4-pin power socket, but the 7000's manual shows DC connected to both pins (vertically) on each side.

That way we could have a button on the Remote Hams rig control interface.

Thanks.
