Re: Compatible Tuner with IC 7000

I've been using the LDG AT-7000 with my IC-7000 for about 10 years. The antenna is a Comet UHV6 HF with loading coils for 40, 20 15 and 10. I bought a cup holder mound for the control head unit and a Heil one-ear headset. The radio and tuner are mounted under the passenger seat of my VW Passat. When I navigate away from the resonant freq of the antenna, I simply press "TUNE".??

I have the AT200Pro with the interface cable. Can't get it easier with my mono-band whips I use

Re: Compatible Tuner with IC 7000

10 years my mobile set-up? has been an IC7000 remote in the trunk under the floor in the tire well. I use a AH4.. output of the AH4- is 8 inches of RG8 minus shielding to the base of a 3/8"-24 CB stud antenna mount. coming out below the bumper on a 1.5x 3/8 steel bar. painted to match the car.(white)...

At first I tried a crappy MFJ 40M hamstick.?? the loading coil is on the lower 4 feet of the antenna..maybe top of loading coil 5 feet off the ground.? Results were dismal....

Then I impulse bought a Hustler 1 piece mast and a 40M resonator... With that on the same antenna mount the 40M loading coil was now just over 6 feet in the air.. No trouble working VK's at 3 in the morning driving Wichita to Kansas city on the Kansas turnpike.. on 40M. with a 3way with Long island ham running a KW.. .

I use the 40 meter resonator on 80-40 and I use a 20 meter resonator on 20-17-15-10-6...I put 20M resonator on daytime, and it even does a good job on 40M..
The 40M resonator is good for top end 75Meter state wide nets...

I have a HI-Q antenna... only screwdriver type antenna I'd recommend. only it looks ugly on my car, great on my truck...

Regarding tuning the antenna-- hit the tune button.. and watch the graph display of SWR.. i can get 20KCs of bandwidth (under 1.5) on 80 with the 40M resonator.. about 80kcs on 40 and above 40 all is good.. tune once per band..

I always get good reports.. If I can hear it I can work it... Great for those 3 day trips Wichita to Boston..or Wichita to Orlando. or Wichita to Grand Canyon.?

Happy New Year...

Larry W8LM..

I have an LDG AT-100 Pro, which works well with my IC7000,? I made an interface cable.? I believe one can be purchased as well.

LDG AT7000? its designed for the IC7000.

I have used an AH-4 tuner and it works very well, although I did not use mine mobile. I had bad luck with an MFJ auto tuner (forgot the model) but it would not allow the fan in the IC-7000 to run except when the radio reached an overheat condition. I ended up having to replace the finals.

Hi Phil,

I am also using an IC-7000 in my car together with an LDG AT-100 pro antenna tuner for HF bands. The tuner does quite a good job tuning my mono band MFJ whips.

?I run a 7000 with the AH4 tuner and 102” whip(mobile). It works wonderfully and I’ve been running this for near 5 yrs now. Of course mobile doesn’t quite compare with a good 100 watt base and an antenna with gain but my combo can sure hold its own. Prior to the 7000 I ran the same with a 706MKIIG. Again a good combo.

I have been told that the MFJ controller for the ATAS needs a modification to be compatible with the 7000, and once done it does not show the SWR meter during tuning.
I'm thinking maybe using the MFJ control to key the radio after switching to CW so I can tune via the SWR meter. All of this fooling around to tune basically just puts me back to the system i used before.
?? Possibly an Icom tuner at the base of the antenna with a reasonably sized whip may be so much easier.
?? Any Thoughts?

Re: Compatible Tuner with IC 7000

The AH4 with a 102 “ whip will work great. Be sure to double insulate the feed wire from the tuner to the whip. I used heavy gas line hose from an auto parts store.? Here is a safety tip for mobile use…if you remote the head. I made a two conductor cable that plugged into the head unit . The wires were connected to the ptt line and ground. This cable was routed to a small foot switch ?which I located where the old school, dimmer switches were located .upper left corner of the floor on the drivers side. A computer style cable will work, just check the pin out twice for safety sake and wire to the foot switch. Then I used a headset with a one piece earphone and a boom mic. This I plugged into the mic jack on the back of the rig. So while driving all I had to do was steer with one hand, dial with the other, and key the ptt with my foot. Worked great for me.

Loosing First LO when Changing Frequency

Edited

Hi, I'm having an odd issue with my IC-7000.? It has an odd behavior that it will loose RX and TX when changing the frequency. Power cycling the radio allows it to come back but moving the dial will make it go deaf again.? I was able to verify that the 1st LO goes away when this error happens.? The 2nd and 3rd LO are still outputting fine.? I probed all the inputs of the 1st DDS, 1DST/PCK/PDT/PRES/1CN0/1CN1, but am unsure what a correct input looks like. I am able to verify there is a signal going into DDS FI201 but not DDS D301 when it is in the error state.? I have not pulled the metal shielding off to access IC301 directly yet.? I did noticed grounding PRES while spinning the dial will reset IC301 and the 1st LO will come back to allow RX for a brief moment.

I have changed out all the ribbon cables and traced the signals as close to DDS IC301 as I can.? I have noticed that PRES and 1CN0 are always set high. DST, PCK, PDT, and 1CN1 will pulse when I spin the dial.? Does anyone know the behavior of these inputs? Is there anything else I can try?

HM-151 mic cord

My IC-7000 mike cord has developed an intermittent.? I see plenty on the e place for $8.99.? Is there one supplier I should prefer or any I should avoid?? A better place to buy one?

Thanks and Happy New Year.

Be very careful with the ribbon cables?
since the 7k has been around for so long the plastic ribbon cables are usually very brittle.

Re: When in service mode cannot do any adjustments

Forgot to add get power at the J101 and then also low at the driver and the finals . But it as low as if not txing

Re: When in service mode cannot do any adjustments

Reception is fine but only transmits about 3 watts on uhf nothing on 2 meters and nothing on hf. the two predrivers havebeen replaced the main driver has been replaced and all the other drivers still the same...pre drivers and all the finals where replaced

Re: MP853

thank you Steve that looks correct. i have found the solder broken in the pic i sent. ok thats not the problem. I have tested the rig and fond no out on the CP951 .and fond the small solder connection.Know i wonder what could be the problm.....Reception is fine but only transmits about 3 watts on uhf nothing on 2 meters and nothing on hf. the two predrivers havebeen replaced the main driver has been replaced and all the other drivers still the same....

Erratic output resolved

I recently acquired an IC-7000. Had several Icom units before, never 7k, but I am excited by the “ahead-of-its- time” features.
After initial set up the output became erratic - screen fuzzes over on 2M transmit; must turn radio off/on to re-set power; and; very inconsistent tune-up with power on hf bands. ?
I read a lot of “mail” about how the connectors - fuses, plugs, sockets sometimes presented a corrosive barrier ( resistance, bad connection) and that might likely be the problem.
After trying to think my way through this problem - with no success - I decided to take the advice of the mail. I cleaned and re-seated the in-line fuses - no change. ?But after more failure, I decided to spray the fuse holders, all the PL239 sockets and the mic input plugs and sockets.
That did it! ?

A simple spray with contact cleaner in some key points, and the radio tunes like a champ on all bands with full output.

So all the collective wisdom about cleaning contacts - all of them if you can - came true.
Never had this problem before with any radios, but first time for everything. And, I am grateful for the “collective wisdom” and the very simple solution to a seemingly confusing issue.
