I run a 7000 with the AH4 tuner and 102” whip(mobile). It works wonderfully and I’ve been running this for near 5 yrs now. Of course mobile doesn’t quite compare with a good 100 watt base and an antenna with gain but my combo can sure hold its own. Prior to the 7000 I ran the same with a 706MKIIG. Again a good combo.

Greetings and Happy new year.
?? I recently needed to change vehicles and I am looking to scale down the whole setup inside and outside the vehicle.
? I had a tri bander for 2m, 220, and 440 and simply used a mag mount for that antenna.
?I have decided to just run one rig to simplify things.
? For HF I have an Icom 7000. As most of you will agree this is an awesome radio..I can almost run with the big dogs, and certainly sound as good as most 100 watt stations.
The 7000 is setup now for 2m and 440 machines in my local area and working well, for HF I was contemplating either an ATAS or maybe one of those Icom tuners with lets say a 100 inch whip or thereabouts.
? Anyone have experience with either of these setups?
I have been told that the MFJ controller for the ATAS needs a modification to be compatible with the 7000, and once done it does not show the SWR meter during tuning.
I'm thinking maybe using the MFJ control to key the radio after switching to CW so I can tune via the SWR meter. All of this fooling around to tune basically just puts me back to the system i used before.
?? Possibly an Icom tuner at the base of the antenna with a reasonably sized whip may be so much easier.
?? Any Thoughts?
?? Thanks in advance
