Re: [IC-7000] More Smoke than RF
Agreed, Milo! Sometimes I feel my old vacum tube powered radio is just like a lit 5W lamp, compared to the 7k. ? I can’t say I use that much my 7k, but, I can feel it very hot after 30 minutes at 50% power 2m band. ? Hi Bill, Just curious how long (over all, not that session) you have been using it, and if you were running full power, or close to it.? It has always been my opinion, not shared by all I might add, that the physical package size of the 7000 is just too small for that much power to work 100% reliably.? Many 7000's will work just fine for years. But if there were any undetected marginal components, they would be prone to failure under the heat stress.? I have not tried to investigate my contention, but I would bet that the full size desk top Icoms have not experienced this level of failures.? Granted, it's more likely you hear about the failures and not the thousands of non-failures.? Nevertheless, I have always been an advocate of running the 7000 at reduced power.? The difference on the receiving end between 50 watts and 100 watts is negligible. But the difference to the rig is considerable.? Just my 2 cents. On Wed, Jan 1, 2014 at 12:59 PM, <william.lifsey@...> wrote:

With three failures in a year, I would look if there is something about your installation that could be a problem. ?The common problems in my experience are:

开云体育Welcome to the club :-) ?When it happened to me, I sent it off to the local ICOM distributor, who repaired it under warranty and promptly returned it to me with no hassles. It is disappointing that the radio has this weakness, but the after-sales support has been good. Lucky when it happened, I had just finished building a CW rig for 40m, so I was still able to get on air while waiting for the repair. 73, Matt VK2RQ On 02/01/2014, at 5:59 AM, <william.lifsey@...> wrote:

开云体育Just to throw my 2 cents in about the IC-M802. The radio is a boat anchor. Then you add the speaker and the control head, both are plastic and neither of which weigh very much. However, this was designed to be installed on a boat or ship. They run roughly $1900. Unless you have to have HF and could get by with VHF, I would suggest getting the IC-M412 marine radio or getting the 416 Mhz EPIRB with your ham radio. I know about the IC-M802, because I bought one a couple of weeks ago to use for voice HF in the Civil Air Patrol. Once I receive my Micom ALE radio, which will be my base station, the 802 is going into my van, along side of my 7000. Icom designed the 802 to go with their auto-tuners. Although, I'm looking into using it with an LDG AT200PRO II. I have yet to find a control cable to go from the radio to the tuner in order to utilize the tune button. The 802 uses a different connector than the ham radios. ...Please forgive me for any possible typos. :-)

More Smoke than RF
My -7000 just produced a wonderful *pop* sound halfway into a Dit-Dit, and then billowed smoke.? Great way to kick off 2014 and work the ARRL Centennial QSO Party. This will be the third time it makes a trip to ICOM in less than a year.? I had heard early model IC-7000s had a tendency to smoke, but thought that was cured.? Has anyone else had experience like this?

APRS is NOT DSC (Digital Selective Calling). ?The IC-7000 doesn't do the DSC protocol. ?You need a marine radio, such as an IC-M412. http://www.icomamerica.com/en/products/marine/mountedvhf/m412/default.aspx Steve, W3AHL ---In ic7000@..., <khufford@...> wrote: You can do 300baud Packet APRS on 30m. Ebay actually has buyer protection; I got an antenna from a merchant, it was a dual band, refused to tune, emailed the merchant, he gave me a refund, and didn't even ask for the antenna back. Also, got a TS-520S, my first and only Kenwood, it tuned 80 watts on most bands, replaced the driver, got 100, sold it for $100.00 more than I paid. Got an MFJ-993B off Ebay, works fine, will tune a barbed wire fence. Also a MFJ-931 to make a ground where there isn't. The 931 had a dirty meter, but I replaced that, and it works fine. 开云体育I do business on eBay occasionally and have had only one incident where I had to get eBay customer service involved. I purchased an EF Johnson radio which was suppose to be new, with a specific firmware version on it. I had taken it to my local EF Johnson service center, who confirmed that the radio was old enough that EF Johnson was no longer supporting that particular radio and there was no way it was what had been advertised. Therefore, it could not be programmed or used without the specific, proprietary software, which was not available from the manufacturer or the eBay company I purchased the radio from. So, I contacted the seller advising them of this. Since I was pushing my 14 day return period at this point, due to a holiday and the scheduling at the service center, I also advised that I was shipping the radio back. It was refused upon delivery. I contacted customer service at this point and within 2 days of having my statement, I received an email from them indicating that they would be refunding my money and had included a shipping label to ship the radio back to the seller. My full, refund was received the next day by PayPal. My point is, eBay is not as bad as it once was, as far as getting ripped off. ...Please forgive me for any possible typos. :-) On Dec 31, 2013, at 2:40, BT Yahoo!?2013 <robert.farey@...> wrote:
