开云体育Btw, 2000 ma rated 18650 cells are the jelly bean category of the family. Later versions are in the 3000 ma range with Panasonic the leader.? Be aware that there are two types of the cells, protected versus unprotected. ?Basic cells are unprotected and OEM. Protected cells have a small circuit board with a solid state "fuse" that disconnects the cell in the event of over current or under voltage discharge. They are usually added by second tier distributors and make the cell slightly longer. Lithium chemistry require the cells to be used with care. Improper charging or discharge can cause them to heat to the point of ignition. Protected cells are worth the extra cost. 开云体育The strap has to be spot welded as it takes too much heat to solder and you could damage the cells. Check to see if you have a "Batteries R us" type store close to you. ?They can build packs for you and there are numerous sources on the Inlet. You can get battery holders for the 18650 cells that would make pack assembly easy. Google is your friend... Perry K4PWO Sent from my Galaxy S?III -------- Original message -------- From: k3hx@... Re: [IC-7000] IC-7000 and SOTA
开云体育The only problem with almost all nominal 12 volt radios, is that the power
out will drop to about half the maximum when the applied voltage drops to about
12.5 volts. I run mine mobile exclusively and when stationary with the engine
off, the power out drops to the expected 50 Watts. Not a problem for me and I
just use it. Does this mean it’s crap? I don’t think so. My FT100 did this as
well but again why worry? It’s only half a nominal S point and no one will
probably notice that! Probably my previous mobile radios did as well but I
didn’t check them so never worried about the power out when the engine wasn’t
running. My only worry was discharging the battery to the point the engine would
not start!
Once the battery voltage on load drops too low then there will be
instability showing up as poor audio quality (assuming SSB) and the battery
needs charging.
If really worried about the drop in power, buy one of the battery boosters
that go in line with the radio power feed to maintain 13.6 volts at the radio.
You can then run your radio at the full 100 Watts out until the battery is
completely flat. It will also compensate for poor battery wiring and any other
small losses.
Seems to me we are all worrying too much about what doesn’t matter too much
really. It would be nice if the power out was stable over the full battery
voltage range but it isn’t. Maybe if the manufacturers fitted a battery booster/
stabiliser within the radio and advertised the full power out right down to
maybe 10.8 volts, then they would increase their sales.

开云体育For field day our club runs a 7000 and ft897 both on two deep cycle batteries with battery savers and change the batteries out twice with two spare sets. That is 3 batteries for each radio. By the way, those batteries also power an inverter each to power a laptop for logging. Setup is battery saver, radio, inverter, and laptop on one battery x two stations. Granted those batteries are LARGE but if you had 3 of them with a similar station setup, ?you would have 24 hours at least. And if you had a small generator and charger on the side to recharge the batteries while you are using the other battery, you "technically" are not running on gas power correct? Hi Izzy and thanks for your question. I get mine from Chris (W4HFP) at Buddipole Inc. (buddipole.com) ?I also use the Cellpro 4 charger to charge them. They are not cheap. Re: IC-7000 and SOTA
The 7000 is my?only DXpedition radio for?operating?portable from remote locations on battery power. My?equipment must work or the entire trip is?an expensive waste of time. I go small, light and the very best quality in all my gear.?The whole station fits in my backpack and I usually operate at?25 watts or more for about?two hours (often in pile-ups) from a 26 ounce, A-123,?4S2P, eight cell?nanophosphate battery. I take two with me and charge them while back at the villa or base for lunch. I have squeked as many as 200 contacts from one battery. I have?over 300 (40 minute) charges on each and they are as strong as ever. They will be called on again in February for a trip to the island of Bequia in the West Indies. ? So the 7K on batts is both possible and very rewarding. ? 73, Dan WZ1P??? |

Re: IC-7000 and SOTA
My 7K seems to be happy on a standalone battery for portable use. ?You can't run 100 watts -- but 25 watts is only one S-unit down. Mine will reliably deliver 35 watts TX PO at 10.9 VDC (measured at the radio). ?You really don't want to discharge a deep cycle battery much below that, anyway. ?It's no worse than an FT-857 or IC-706, in my experience -- once you remove icom's deficient fuse holders on the power cord that can drop over one volt at full load. The drop of TX PO with supply voltage is a function of the PA FET specification primarily and is no different from its competition, in my tests. ?It could be designed to supply 100 watts at 11-15 VDC on HF, with extra cost and heat dissipation, but the battery's charge would plummet rapidly. Of course the battery has to be sized for the task and well maintained over time, also. ?I use retired 80AH AGM batteries that are cycled out of commercial UPS systems every 3 years. Steve, W3AHL ---In ic7000@..., <jmrinehart@...> wrote: Before you decide to lug that 7K to the top of some summit, be reminded that it does not work well on a battery.?
