Re: Microscopes for SMD soldering etc

+1 on the procedural language. Kind of the same as Arduino coding. I watched a lot of OpenSCAD videos. Got them all bookmarked. Very powerful for little coding. I bought a used Panavise from ebay recently and it came with the large pcb board holder. Bought a smaller one from Amazon that is steel/aluminum with plastic jaws.

Now I wonder if you can put it together with the focus slide reversed, like that:
<>
Well, a bit nicer than that obviously, but you get the idea.

This way nothing would stick down needlessly below the objective.?
I mean 8" WD is great anyway, but why obstruct the working space below when above there is just air?

With the Mantis I find myself bumping into the x8 lens quite a bit while using the (shorter) x4 magnification.
I've even put an extender on the x4 to increase?the working distance, which makes them more similar in length, but still it's annoying sometimes to have that other lens in the way when it is not even in use.

Dunno if there is any bias in the slide to make it self lock against the weight of the head, but then I think it's still odd they designed it like that.

If they can offer all that for $500 I think I should reconsider my plan to look out for a used Zeiss or Leica with zoom.

It's way way way more like C than not.

It's not a procedural language, what you assign stays for the whole duration unless it's in a loop.? Makes an important difference in how you describe objects.

Try designing some board holder supports (you *do* want the main board holder made from metal), a panavise board holder is a good idea.

Re: Duplicate messages?

I see a few messages coming into my email now with timestamps of 10:00 AM so maybe they will all arrive by tomorrow. :)

Re: Microscopes for SMD soldering etc

Looks like a nice one. My eyes are even older than yours so I feel your pain...I just had to finally throw in the towel as I am interested enough in this hobby to want to do it right. And even though all my stuff is easy to the experts, I have to start somewhere...

Re: Microscopes for SMD soldering etc

I have the 1.75x or 14" version of that and I like it, but I needed something more. :)

?I find even with a high power magnifier I sometimes miss shorts.
So when I design the PCB I put a row of vias alongside the IC so I can buzz the pins out for shorts.

Yes.

Re: Microscopes for SMD soldering etc

Not a microscope but I use these and they provide nice magnification for hand soldering and debridge work.?

Hi Rob,

know I read that a 0.5 objective lens really makes a big difference on
how much (FOV) you can see. And some manufacturers may or may not offer
that lens as an option. If I replied twice it is because I didn't see a
returned message and I have been replying to all that commented.

Thanks,

My eyes are over 50 yrs old and I could not manage without my Bausch Lomb StereoZoom 7. Its mounded on a boom with really heavy base. I replaced the original florescent light with a homemade LED ring light. I got it second hand on flea bay for a few hundred quid but it was well worth it. I can see to solder most anything. It’s also great for inspection, e.g. looking at the gap below QFN’s or even touching up the soldering on the pads.

?

Don’t get something with too high a magnification. Mine is fitted X10 WF (Wide Field) Eye pieces so twiddling the knob on top takes it from x7 to x30. I find the x7 setting fine for the vast majority of my SMT soldering work.

Re: This PCB Microscope looks good, I think.

I have a Panavise and a few other board holders. But I just bought some Blu Tack as I watched a video where a guy uses it to hold his pcb's from moving. Haven't tried it yet but it looks promising. I could make a pcb board holder with the plastic printer I guess. Sometimes I forget all the stuff you can make with the 3d printer.

A very useful OpenSCAD skeleton is

module <name> ()

{

??? difference()

?? {

??? ??? union ()

??? ??? {

??? ??? }

??? ??? union ()

?? ??? {

??? ?? }

??? }

}

Then figure out a way to conditionally show a module....

all parameters at beginning of program, etc.

You'll get the idea.?? Very good for cases, and also can be used with EAGLE (and additional programming) to make 3D board models.

Also, I looked at OpenSCAD again and it looks quite useful. At first it looked like a pain but I see the light now.

I bounce from one project to the next while continuing to work on them all by ordering stuff or studying. In the end I may actually get something done. :)

That looks good.? You'll want a PC board holder of some sort.? I used some 20mm square frame material, and fabricated (using an existing holder I had), a flat board holder that adjusts for boards.? You could use part of the panavise setup, but you want to make sure that the board can't tilt, which will mandate a firm support.

Re: Microscopes for SMD soldering etc .....5 DIOPTER reading glasses

I have various reading glasses but none over 2.25. I also have a headband magnifier which is nice but non-adjustable. I got the one with a 14" distance and that is somewhat limiting. Good info.

Re: Microscopes for SMD soldering etc

Good info. Got that handled with the one I ordered. I spent less than I budgeted for but made sure I won't have to buy a second or third one because I didn't think of all the options.
Thanks
