TX ERR on 40m from .101 to .200
33
One of my FT817nds (serial no 4H) won¡¯t transmit on the top half of 40m. My other one is fine and this one works on the lower half and on all other frequencies. I¡¯ve just started using this one on 40, previously it¡¯s been 20m and above. Anyone any ideas please? A web search has only brought up ¡°won¡¯t transmit at all¡±. Any help gratefully received... FT817 over-currents in tx on 18Mhz (17m) and 21Mhz (15m) - any ideas?
HI all, I am trying to repair an early model FT817. It is fine on all bands/modes in RX. It is fine on TX in all modes, except for 18Mhz (17m) and 21Mhz (15m). In the affected bands, measured in CW, the rig draws 3A+ from the bench psu, and RF filter relays buzz loudly. This can trigger a shutdown, or the rig stays on and buzzes terribly. My analysis so far - testing in CW mode: the preamp/driver stage works well. This feeds into the PA finals board, which seems to amplify happily - but supplies too much current in the affected bands. If I separate the predrivers/PA final stage from the RF filtering stage at the balun (T3001 in schematics), and insert a dummy load to absorb the PA final output, the TX works normally (~2A PSU current draw) on ALL BANDS. This suggests the issue is the balun itself or after the balun in the RF filtering stages. According to KA7OEI's fantastic info pages, https://www.ka7oei.com/ft817_rcv.html, 20m & 17m use the same RF filter FIL5, while 15m, 12m & 10m all use FIL6. Given 20m and 12m/10m work ok, this suggests the issue is not in the RF filters themselves, since they work happily 'half the time'. Through experimentation, I notice that reconnecting the balun (T3001) to the RF filter board via an inductor of ~0.3uH (originally discovered after using basic crocodile clip cables to reconnect the stages together), the TX over-current stops - and the rig operates as normal, except for the introduced inductance that rises with frequency, hence lowering the output power (and lowering the PSU current draw) with rising TX frequency. This 'fix' itself causes problems on 50+VHF/UHF I think. It suggests to me there is some low impedance path to ground around 20Mhz (affecting 18Mhz & 21Mhz), and have pulled the board out of the rig to take a look. But nothing seems immediately wrong. Has anyone experienced similar TX over-current on specific bands, where other bands work fine ? Could the issues lie in the RF filters? How best to test balun T3001 to check if it is at fault? Any ideas or suggestions are greatly appreciated, 73 de Matt Nassau, M0NJX

ALC throwing tantrum
Hello, I'm using a generic CAT bluetooth device paired with a DIN/P2 cable connected to FT8CN for an FT8 interface. Out of whim, once or twice, if I TX at 5 W on 10 m, the ALC goes to 0. If I change the power to 2.5 W (only change I make on the rig), ALC goes to "4 bars". After a couple of TX's in this configuration if I change the power back to 5 W, ALC stays at "4 bars" permanently. Any suggestions what might be causing it? Daniel PY2TDB.

Chirp issues? Old 817. Distant stories of bricks
9
I am using my 817 again. I've had it since a year or two after they came out. Gets used in spurts but I have never used programing software such as CHIRP. Main reason is that once upon a time I read that chirp(and others) had a habit of bricking certain Yaesu radios. Was this a thing? has it been addressed? I don't mind entering things from the keyboard but starting up in a new area with a dozen or so rptrs, new HF nets, M17 etc, it would be nice to do it by cptr. And, if not chirp are there any proven apps? Thanks for any thoughts Larry

Hair rising story

Today I was racing the bands so much during a POTA activation that I noticed I CQ'd two times 5 W in FT8 on 6 m using the wrong output (antenna was in the rear but the menu was selected FRONT). After I noticed, I corrected and the radio operated normally on both outputs (apparently). How much did I ruin the radio? Daniel.

PWR level

Hello, If I use a Windcamp 3 Ah battery, I can choose the power among the values LI, LII, LIII and LIII (blinking). If I turn off the windcamp switch and plug in a 9 Ah Bioenno, I can only choose among LI, LII and LIII. Does it mean that with the Bioenno I can only output 2.5 W? Daniel PY2TDB.

Bluetooth CAT device
3
I finally got the bluetooth CAT device for my 817 and am using Dan Toma¡¯s Pocket TxRx lite after difficulty on an older Android phone. It is a very slick program. Dan gives all sorts of warnings of the potential that the program could damage the radio or radio operating system. He strongly suggests that a backup file be made, just in case the radio file gets damaged, corrupted or whatever. Does anyone know how to make a backup file for the FT817, non ND? I¡¯ll check YouTube and Google again, to see if I can find something. Thanks

TX Inhibit
12
I want to connect a receive only loop antenna and don't want to risk killing it if the 817 goes into transmit. Is there a way to inhibit the TX output. I could remove the mic so that the PTT is not available but I'd like something a bit more sure than that. Wellbrook loops are very expensive to replace!

FT-817 compatibility

Mike (call sign?) wrote¡ If you use AM for tuning, the carrier is reduced to 1.5 W or less no matter what power level you have the radio set for. It gives you a reduced power signal for tuning without having to press any buttons except the mode button. -- 73 Keith VE7GDH

FT817 compatibility
8
This is kind of a continuation of the display thread/subject. I received the display yesterday. It came with the mini DIN cable and my 817 was able to power it. However, I am using the cat port for the LDG Z817 tuner with radio menu setting at 38400, the new display requires a cat rate of 4800. The LDG tuner has a pass through cat. Not sure how to make both work. Can I just set to the lower rate, 4800 and both will/should work? There is also a RJ45 connection option that I haven¡¯t tried yet. Thanks all

Larger/brighter Display option
16
Hi, my non ND 817 display is fine, but 2 color backlighting isn¡¯t very helpful in low light. I see a $42.88 external CAT display device, 12864 on Ali Express, but very little info. I¡¯m not skilled enough to do any mods, but a plug and play, inexpensive option would be nice. For now, I¡¯m experimenting with an external, soft white, pico LED to illuminate the screen from the front. Kind of like a reading book light. Anyone using this or other device? Thanks

FT817ND Front Panel PCB replacement - Blinking display
3
I have just replaced the front panel PCB on a friends FT817ND (Lot82). I had called Yaesu UK and the told me that the board was compatible (CS1909409). It was a straightforward replacement except for desoldering the AF-SQL/RF pot. I had to snip the pins of the old connector to remove it but I do not believe that I damaged the pot and it seems to test ok. On powering up the LCD screen display blinks and there is no audio. I am able to change frequency, mode, etc and all buttons and dials seem to work. However, the AF-SQL/RF pot does nothing. Searching the web I am told that this is clasical of the PLL not locking. I plugged in the original board and this seems to lock (PLL wise). I have no screen (reason for replacement) but using 'FT817 Commander' software I can 'see' the frequency, mode etc and all seems to be well on the receive front. Audio is working. The radio shuts down when I try to transmit but this may be RF getting in somewhere it shouldn't (the whole radio is out of its container). I obtained all the parameters from the service menu on the original board and programmed it into the new one hoping that this was the answer. No difference. I presumed that I would have to do a full alignment and I started this. I did not get very far:- Reference Frequency Adjustment - No problem - freq and voltage fine. VCO VCV Adjustment - voltage wrong and not adjustable as PLL not locked. PLL "Unlock" Display alert - unplugging the Ref Unit the voltage is 5mV on J2002 (pin1) but no change in the display. The voltage is 25mV with the unit replaced. 2nd Local Adjustment - No problem 3rd Local Adjustment - not possible as no transmit And thats as far as I got. Am I missing something? Is this board really compatible? Is there something specific that I need to alter (pot, menu item etc) to allow the PLL to lock. Any help gratefully received. Thanks. Best wishes, David G7IBO

FT-817 almost powers up
19
I have a 817 I am working on that I picked up at a flea. on battery, when POW-ON the display briefly starts (solid pattern on LCD) and shuts off (and I hear a relay click) on external power, the rig does nothing (and it appears there maybe short -- supply shuts off) Anyone seen this before? I probed around the power connector and it seems ok I also checked the MAIN board top and bottom and I don't see any craters. On battery, when I power up I seem to get a good 5V at the display before it shuts off. b

FT 817 repaired
14
I ordered a final board from a store in Germany for the 818 and installed it. I made several contacts to Chicago and Connecticut and around the Southeast on 40 meters. It was a good day for my hamfest special FT 817. Maybe I can pick up a cw filter someday. Just glad to get it on the air. I made the mistake of telling Yaesu USA that I wanted one for my 817. I probably should have said it was an 818. Maybe they would have sold me one then instead of telling me no parts were available. 73s John N4HNO
