FT817ND Front Panel PCB replacement - Blinking display
3
I have just replaced the front panel PCB on a friends FT817ND (Lot82). I had called Yaesu UK and the told me that the board was compatible (CS1909409). It was a straightforward replacement except for desoldering the AF-SQL/RF pot. I had to snip the pins of the old connector to remove it but I do not believe that I damaged the pot and it seems to test ok. On powering up the LCD screen display blinks and there is no audio. I am able to change frequency, mode, etc and all buttons and dials seem to work. However, the AF-SQL/RF pot does nothing. Searching the web I am told that this is clasical of the PLL not locking. I plugged in the original board and this seems to lock (PLL wise). I have no screen (reason for replacement) but using 'FT817 Commander' software I can 'see' the frequency, mode etc and all seems to be well on the receive front. Audio is working. The radio shuts down when I try to transmit but this may be RF getting in somewhere it shouldn't (the whole radio is out of its container). I obtained all the parameters from the service menu on the original board and programmed it into the new one hoping that this was the answer. No difference. I presumed that I would have to do a full alignment and I started this. I did not get very far:- Reference Frequency Adjustment - No problem - freq and voltage fine. VCO VCV Adjustment - voltage wrong and not adjustable as PLL not locked. PLL "Unlock" Display alert - unplugging the Ref Unit the voltage is 5mV on J2002 (pin1) but no change in the display. The voltage is 25mV with the unit replaced. 2nd Local Adjustment - No problem 3rd Local Adjustment - not possible as no transmit And thats as far as I got. Am I missing something? Is this board really compatible? Is there something specific that I need to alter (pot, menu item etc) to allow the PLL to lock. Any help gratefully received. Thanks. Best wishes, David G7IBO

FT-817 almost powers up
19
I have a 817 I am working on that I picked up at a flea. on battery, when POW-ON the display briefly starts (solid pattern on LCD) and shuts off (and I hear a relay click) on external power, the rig does nothing (and it appears there maybe short -- supply shuts off) Anyone seen this before? I probed around the power connector and it seems ok I also checked the MAIN board top and bottom and I don't see any craters. On battery, when I power up I seem to get a good 5V at the display before it shuts off. b

Hi, I have picked up a WhatsOn 3A Power Supply that plugs into the mains. Will that work ok with the FT818nd as it can deliver 3A continuous. Dont want to plug it in just in case without confirmation :-) Thanks Tony

FT 817 repaired
14
I ordered a final board from a store in Germany for the 818 and installed it. I made several contacts to Chicago and Connecticut and around the Southeast on 40 meters. It was a good day for my hamfest special FT 817. Maybe I can pick up a cw filter someday. Just glad to get it on the air. I made the mistake of telling Yaesu USA that I wanted one for my 817. I probably should have said it was an 818. Maybe they would have sold me one then instead of telling me no parts were available. 73s John N4HNO

Power output instable
25
Ok. Let's see if anyone can give me a tip on where to look for my FT818. I have a strange behavior on the 2 meter band, the output power (indicated by the display) is not constant when pressing the PTT. Sometimes it reads 100%, sometimes 30%, sometimes 0. And actually the output power is different, it's not just the display. The SWR is slightly higher at low power, but not significantly. It's not the antenna: I tried two, and one is a 70cm/2m dual band and on 70cm everything works great. It happens with any mode on 2m and on all other bands everything works. I suspect a relay, but any tips on what to check would be appreciated. 73, I2OIM

MRW-HF100 antenna set
13
Not FT817 directly, but I intend to use the kit with it. The instructions say that best performance is had with a ground or a counterpoise. Just for fun, I tried the house ground and that's extremely noisy. Any recommendations for a suitable length of counterpoise? The intended use is on the dining table of any holiday let we stay in.. so it'll need to snake around the room, I think. Also, any feedback on how well these antenna kits work? Anything is better than nothing but the vendor feedback has an equal balance of (very) good and (very) bad reviews. Thanks John G0GCD

Keeping this group on the web
23
Recently the members were asked if they could donate a few bucks to pay the annual groups.io fee. There are 9355 members of this group, if everyone of them were to donate one (1) dollar to keep this group on the net for an annual fee of $200, this group would be on the net for 9355/200 = 46, that would be 46 years with no requests for donations and the FT-817/ND would probably have faded into amateur radio history by 2070. If you have benefited in any way from this group, please, donate a couple of bucks to keep it going. John VE7KKQ Yes, I did donate.

Clone FT817 to FT818
11
From: Leicester Hibbert <rhi55057@...> Sent: Sunday, 20 October 2024 4:28 PM To: '[email protected]' <[email protected]> Subject: Clone FT817 to FT818 Hi All, I’m having trouble trying to clone a FT817 to a friend’s FT818 using FTBasicMMO with a CT-62 cable, and a direct Clone Cable as described on P69 of the FT817 Handbook. In both cases the procedure ends abruptly with an error message. Am I wrong to think it should work? 73 Leicester Hibbert VK4ALH

FL110 with 817
10
Hi I was wondering if anyone has any tip on this combo . it seems to work ok but as the 817 is so low power , the T/R switching on the amp keeps cutting in and out on ssb with the audio.. When Im at full voice its fine, but on pauses as i take a breath (yes I do that!) it goes to RX again,, meaning every over is on/off/on/off and choppy. I need faster tx/attack... but longer "hang time" to stay in tx after i shut my pie-hole a few seconds. Does anyone us has used this combo know if there is an adjuster in the amp or mod for this. Any thoughts? 73 de Jem VK7JEM

Ft-818
27
It seems that the FT-818 group is exhausted, so I try here. My 818 has no output on 2 m, while it works on 70cm and HF. The SWR is at maximum, so I think some relay is not closing when it should. Is there any way to have the diagrams and the component layout plan of the 818? Thanks to all Pietro I2OIM

Internal battery FT-817ND
42
I have a roughly 6 year old Windcamp battery, All has been fine with it until this week when it literally expanded like a balloon. The physical structure is not swollen, but the plastic cover is 'puffed up' like a balloon and can be pressed back into shape. I assume something within is emitting a gas and I have removed it from service for disposal. This leads me to ask what is now available for internal fitting on the FT817? (preferably to the UK area). Thanks, Andy GD1MIP
