Re: Flashing Screen and no audio on FT-817ND
Hi Aaron,
I would remove the internal batteries and try it with external 12 to 14 volt power supply or external known good battery.? Sounds like battery tray not making good connection with batteries & rechargeable battery pack not fully charging.? Could be bad connection on the little battery plug also. 73, Reed? W4JZ |
Flashing Screen and no audio on FT-817ND
Greetings, all: Somehow, and I'm not certain how, the display on my FT-817ND has started flashing. It's not a backlight flicker, but the display itself is turning on and off. Also, no audio comes out of the radio whatsoever. The radio has been modded with the SotaBeams DSP filter, but is otherwise stock. I followed the instructions that G0FTD posted about charging a battery pack (https://sites.google.com/site/g0ftdradio/home/ft817-info), then removing one battery and turning it on and off again. I did it with AA alkaline batteries in the tray (after charging the FNB-85 that the radio came with). No luck; it's still flashing and I can't get it to work. None of the standard reset methods from the manual seem to have any effect. Any other advice, short of sending it back to Yaesu? TIA, Aaron / K7ALF |

Except if you have the internal battery then it will put out the 5 watts even with the small supplied charger. The small charger alone will not supply enough power for full power alone. Marty kd8bj On 11/23/2016 12:33 PM, 'Roland Nyman' roland.nyman@... [FT817] wrote:

OT: needed-- power connector for Yaesu FRG-100 receiver
Brad Thompson
Hello--
(I have a membership request pending for the FRG-100 Yahoo group, but I thought I'd inquire here, too.) I'm looking for the mating male (plug) power connector for the FRG-100's 12 VDC input connector. The FRG-100 repair manual lists the radio (socket) side as... Yaesu p/n 1090771, and it's apparently an SMK p/n LGP6531-0400. Further research unearths what looks like a mating SMK male connector p/n LLP0143-1500, but I haven't located a source as yet. Plan B would involve digging into the radio and replacing the power socket with something that's more common, but I'd really rather not do that unless it's absolutely necessary. If anyone knows of a source for the proper connector, please e-mail me. On a broader topic, once upon a time I'd visit my local Radio Shack and peruse its pegboard wall of power connectors, but that's gone. A question for the list: where are people buying small parts like these nowadays? Thanks, and 73-- Brad AA1IP |
Re: FT-817 Charging current and hour info?
Maybe I¡¯m missing something but¡
If you with ¡°stock charger¡± mean the small charger coming with the radio at purchase, there will be severe distortion of the RF signal with full power. I was first surprised the radio was delivering 5W of CW with such a small PS but when listening to the signal on another radio there were several strong sidebands. 73, Roland SM0BRF Fr?n: FT817@... When in the home QTH, I keep the stock chager connected, and run at 5 watts. In the off-time, then the trickle charge feature keeps it fully charged. If I am really using the radio heavily, then I switch over to a conventional power supply that will provide full transmit current. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] |
Re: FT817 audio mod - PCB pad delamination
I think it's?going to be easier for you to look at the circuit diagram than?to describe in detail. First download the Service Manual, there is a link in the "Files" section of the Yahoo Group. Now find C1338. Look at the "Main" unit circuit diagram on Page 25 or Page 29 (depending on your version but for what you want they are similar).? On the right hand side you'll see the battery connector "BATT", and just above it a connector labelled "13US".? Then scan your eyes to the left until you see Q1070 IC which is a TDA72330 IC.? Just to the left and?lower you'll see C1338. One end of C1338 is connected to R1482. The other end of C1338?goes off to what is labelled "Vol?2" which?goes to a connector labelled VR1, look at Page 23 and you'll see how the Sq/RF + volume control unit VR1 is connected to connector J4001. So it appears that one end f R1482 and Pin 2 of connector J4001 is what you're looking for. If you look at the circuit diagram all will be much more obvious, when you find C1338 on it of course!. FT817 audio mod - PCB pad delamination
Hi Folks,
I've been trying to add a digital audio filter to my FT-817 by routing the signal out from one pad on C1338, through the DSP daughterboard, then back in through the other pad on the same capacitor.? Unfortunately the pad where the signal is returned to the main board has de-laminated from the PCB.? There appears to be a via underneath it that I can't solder to.? I'm trying to find another place to introduce the filtered signal into the 817 circuit, but I'm not super familiar with the board.? If anyone has any advice or experience with this I'd really appreciate it.? Cheers, John VA7JBE |

Since the original battery for the 817 was I think a 1400 mAh battery ISome battery basics.... Charging NiCd or NiMh cells is pretty straighforward. For a standard "slow charge" of all cells in series without any end of charge detection (ie., the way the FT817 does it), apply a current of between 1/10 and 1/20 of the pack capacity. 1/10 capacity is the standard NiCd charge and can be used with NiMh but 1/20 is a better idea for NiMh. Ignoring inefficiency, the duration will be the pack capacity divided by the charge current. Note that at this low charge rate, it is NOT necessary to detect end of charge for short durations.... simply charge longer than the pack capacity divided by the charge current and call it good. The FT817 charges at (as I recall) 160mA, which is (give or take) appropriate for both NiCd and NiMh. So for example, consider a pack consisting of AA NiMh cells. Probably in the 2000mAH capacity range. Not considering inefficiency, the required charge time for completely dead would be 2000/160=12.5 hours. More is OK.... even preferred because it ensures that all cells are fully charged. Less is also OK, but you just won't be fully charged and the individual cells may be at different states of charge. When I charge (I use NiMh cells), I set 10 hours and do it twice ;) Again, at this current level, taking the pack into overcharge is good unless it is left that way for many days. Since the original battery for the 817 was I think a 1400 mAh battery I would choose the 10 hour charge time for the first charge cycle, then depending on how deeply it is discharged maybe the 8 hour after that. Now you didn't say what the battery is, CD, NiMa or what those I think are the only two you can charge on the internal charger. Marty kd8bj On 11/22/2016 06:08 AM, kg9hfrank@... [FT817] wrote:

Re: IPad software/ application for using /controling FT-817ND by apple tablet?
Jeffrey,? ? Look into the tools offered at ? I use "HamLog" with my macbook laptops to control my rigs with a cable.? However, he also has a serial to Wifi device, which allows an iPad to connect via wifi to a device called the "piglet".? This piglet device then connects via cable to the FT-817 with the right cable. ? ?The video below shows how it's done using an Elecraft KX2.? I presume the same methodology is true with an 817, using the appropriate compatible cables. Hope this helps! 73, N4J00 -Manny On Sun, Nov 20, 2016 at 9:37 PM, jeffery_jackson@... ¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHi Tim,
Any Android or Windows tablet support Serial over Bluetooth, even newer ones (based on Bluetooth 4, but backward compatible with Bluetooth 2 and 3). None of the iPads, even the older ones (based on the Bluetooth 2 or 3) works with Serial over Bluetooth. -- 73 Dan YO3GGX On 21-Nov-16 4:04 PM, thuffaker@... [FT817] wrote: ? |

Does anyone know what tablets support Bluetooth Serial protocol. ?My understanding is a newer standard that may keep some older tablets from being used. ?
