Re: Power adjust
Hi Ken,
Frankly, the FT-817 manual is one of the better written. If you did read what it says in the manual about INTERNAL BATTERY operation, you would have understood that it states that the 3-bar icon flashes when running 5-W output. Because it states this icon condition for battery operation, perhaps it would have been reasonable to realize that it meant exactly what it said --- battery operation. The fine engineers at Yaesu are trying to give each of us a gentle warning that we are really consuming our internal power source at 5 W by blinking the icon at us. The manual writer said exactly what he meant and likely (American) English is his first language if it is who I think wrote it. Logically and consistently, Yaesu decided to use the same scheme for power indication that they have with other units such as the VX-5R. Full power is no icon and lower powers have 1,2 or 3 bars. Guess they figure with a VX-5R you know that you are using battery power. For the FT-817, no icon means full RF power when using an external power source. Now for the commercial --- your question was asked and answered in the FAQ for this site. The FAQ is always a good place to go first if you have a question. Also, the power icon is explained in the Pack- It Reference for the FT-817 by VE3AYR (how to get it is in the FAQ as well). The main problem with Yaesu manuals is that they don't have an index! The Pack-It does and that by itself makes it wonderful. 72/73 de Barry - W4WB --- In FT817@y..., ghostusr@e... wrote: I am trying to set my 817 for 5 watts power. Re: Power adjust
Pres Waterman
You're understanding of what the manual doesn't tellHere's how to think of it. In any case, the various number of solid bars indicates some form of low power. Three icons is MOST of the power, 2 is SOME of the power, 1 is a TINY bit of power, and NONE is NOT low power, therefore full power. Now, on batteries, you have the same exact power levels available... 1, 2, 3, or BLINKING 3 bars... blinking to get your attention that 5w is baaaaad news for batteries. If you think of it, 5w is either NO "low power indicator icons" if on 12v external power ( no worries ), or a blinking power indicator icon ( DANGOR WILL ROBINSON! ) if on precious battery power. Yes, the manual certainly leaves a lot to be desired. Interestingly the QST

review commented that it was an excellent manual, I think most of us here strongly disagree with that statement. However, It sounds like your unit is operating normally. The only time you will see the blinking icon is when you are running on battery and the voltage is below 11 volts or so. If you are using a power supply with 12 or 13 volts you will see no icon at all when the power is at 5 watts. ----- 73, Rich - W3ZJ www.w3zj.com -----Original Message-----

Blinking icon only from internal batteries at the 5w level. Using an external power supply, icon is blank at 5w

Ken,
You're understanding of what the manual doesn't tell you is correct. When you are running from a battery, you get a blinky power icon at 5W. When you run off a power supply, you get no blinky power icon at 5W. You should see what I have at home - an Astron 70 amp power supply with my '817 sitting on top. It is something only a sick engineer would love. tim --- ghostusr@... wrote: I am trying to set my 817 for 5 watts power. My __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? FT-817 Transverter interfacing results
For those that wanted to know....
I finally got a hold of Yaesu today and they confirmed as many on the reflector had suggested that 100 ma on the TX ground line is about it for keying transverters/amps. It was taking 107 ma to key the DEM 10 GHZ transverter, the relays, and the 1W Qualcomm amp. The Qualcomm amp was not keying properly though. The solution was adding a relay inside the transverter so all the FT-817 sees is the one relay that actually keys the transverter, amp, and coaxial relays. Now the current is 45 ma and it works just fine.....thanks to WA1ECF for the solution. I set up portable at the Marconi site in Welfleet, MA (FN51) (as K1XP) on Saturday during the contest and was able to work as far as W2SZ so the system is playing. The DEM/FT-817 certainly makes a real sweet, very compact, portable set up for 10 GHZ 73, Clint W1LP BTW, I'm on land until mid-August |

Re: Compact counterpoise for FT-817 is a Sony AN-71
Hello group,
two AN-71 make a perfect lightweight portable dipole. I use such an antenna since several years now. My best dx with such a dipole using a simple center isolator (no balun) is from Perth/VK to Cologne/DL (my QSO partner was my father, DL6PE), using 2 Watt CW (Mizuho MX-14). Looking forward to have the same fun with the FT-817 now! Subject: [FT817] Portable Military 1.8 - 30Mhz Longwire for Ft-817 I am using a Racal British Army portable longwire aerial with my ATX when stationary. The aerial comes on a lightweight black plastic carrier about 10" long and is constructed of flexible wire insulated in green plastic. Along the length of the wire are shrink wrapped markers showing the freqency the antenna is a 1/4 wavelength at on each HF band. You simply unwind the aerial to say the 14 Mhz marker and it is then the correct length for a 1/4 wave. The aerial also comes with a prefitted bnc connector, and a long length of line on which is a small led weight, you throw the led weight over a tree branch or similar and can then haul up the aerial. The SWR with my Ft-817 has been perfect on all bands tested (plus a counterpoise) without any ATU. The price of these aerials at rallies brand new has been around ?10. It is lightweight and does a super job. Nato stock number 655-901. This message has been sent to help others. 73 de Philip G0ISW Yahoo!
