Can anyone tell me if the Yaesu filter p/n XF-155C will work with the Ft-817?

Portable Military 1.8 - 30Mhz Longwire for Ft-817

I am using a Racal British Army portable longwire aerial with my ATX
when stationary. The aerial comes on a lightweight black plastic
carrier about 10" long and is constructed of flexible wire insulated
in green plastic. Along the length of the wire are shrink wrapped
markers showing the freqency the antenna is a 1/4 wavelength at on
each HF band. You simply unwind the aerial to say the 14 Mhz marker
and it is then the correct length for a 1/4 wave.

The aerial also comes with a prefitted bnc connector, and a long
length of line on which is a small led weight, you throw the led
weight over a tree branch or similar and can then haul up the aerial.

The SWR with my Ft-817 has been perfect on all bands tested (plus a
counterpoise) without any ATU. The price of these aerials at rallies
brand new has been around ?10.

It is lightweight and does a super job. Nato stock number 655-901.

Re: Compact counterpoise for FT-817 is a Sony AN-71

Hi Philip.

I bought a 7.5m lockable steel tape measure from the local DIY store
for ?6.99, which makes an excellent counterpoise. The advantage is
built in calibrations, plus the steel tape seems to be less affected
by positioning than wire, for some unknown reason.

Further to my previous message concerning counterpoise lengths, I
have found here in the UK that the Sony AN-71 compact shortwave
aerial is readily available at around ?9. It consists of 7 metres
of
insulated black wire on a spool which is easily rewound into a
small
black circular case. For 20m to 6m the seven metres of wire
included
is sufficient for a counterpoise, for 80m to 40m I have attached a
crocodile clip to the end of the wire which I attach to any nearby
wire fence and it works great with the ATX walkabout antenna.

Re: ATX won't tune

You are not alone !
After several field tests, I have the same results.
The ATX seems always too short. I used an antenna analyser(AEA)which
usually shows a nice curve with a SWR of 1.1/1.2 BUT 300 ou 400 kHz
up of the frequency I want to use (14060, 21060 ...)Because the
antenna is fully extented the only solution is to increase the
counterpoise.
But (agn) with longest radians the SWR curve becomes less "sharp" and
I get an SWR of 2 - 3. So a little bit to high for me !.
I tried different positions : on the rear connector with adapter, on
the front plug (vertical) or on a small mount at 1 meter from the
817.
I found that when you are close to the antenna you get a much better
tune but I suppose it is not a very good position for the radiation
pattern.
So, like you, not really happy with this antenna or maybe I should
learn to use
it.
So any advices from the ATX (or MP1) guru will be appreciated.

I will now try an 3 meter height antenna (army ) with ZM-2 tuner. Is
it a good solution ?? - to be continued

Re: 20m Low Power Window 14340~14350 (Band Plan Proposal)

Surely you are missing the point. If you want to achieve dependable
communication, use CW or more power. I would have thought the point
of a low power window would be to enable people using low powered
equipment, particularly battery or solar powered, to attempt
communication in the spirit of the hobby, i.e. primarily for fun. 50W
is too much for battery or solar powered equipment and it is not far
enough below what most people use even from their home station to
make any practical difference, in my opinion.

Julian, G4ILO

[snip]

It is doubtful that a 10W PEP SSB proposal would achieve popular
acceptance. Personally, I would not be an advocate for it, since my
own technical experience has shown that it is an unacceptably low
power level for dependable SSB communications in the 14MHz band.

Had the opportunity to compare the ATX with my 20m wire dipole
today,
sitting out in the garden. The dipole is about 20 feet high.
Sitting on
the grass with the 817 between my knees, and the appropriate
counterpoise
lying on the grass, the ATX was never more than 2 s points down on
the
dipole. Admittedly this was the middle of the day, and there was
only
European stuff on 20m, but I was pleasantly surprised.

I'm pleased to say that the 817 novelty still hasn't worn off!!

Well, Phil, we have posted them many times on this group... :-)
You can find the most current schedule on the HFPack site. There is
also a special HFpack schedule for Field Day.

The HFPack Schedule and Frequencies are here:

The schedules are not "nets", just meeting times and frequencies.
The
group usually forms on a regional basis around stations who can
hear
each other. Sometimes, when propagation is good, there are as many
as
40 stations in a big group, with about 75% able to hear each other.
Since propagation skip has been rather short on 18MHz daytime
lately,
there may be several groups around the world who talk on the same
frequency simultaneously with little interference. Just get on
there
and call CQ HFpack or whatever you like. Don't be surprised if you
hear some other FT-817 operator running Pedestrian Mobile on the
beach
or a mountain top somewhere... it happens all the time on 18157 USB.
