I am using a Racal British Army portable longwire aerial with my ATX
when stationary. The aerial comes on a lightweight black plastic
carrier about 10" long and is constructed of flexible wire insulated
in green plastic. Along the length of the wire are shrink wrapped
markers showing the freqency the antenna is a 1/4 wavelength at on
each HF band. You simply unwind the aerial to say the 14 Mhz marker
and it is then the correct length for a 1/4 wave.
The aerial also comes with a prefitted bnc connector, and a long
length of line on which is a small led weight, you throw the led
weight over a tree branch or similar and can then haul up the aerial.
The SWR with my Ft-817 has been perfect on all bands tested (plus a
counterpoise) without any ATU. The price of these aerials at rallies
brand new has been around ?10.
It is lightweight and does a super job. Nato stock number 655-901.
